Shostakovich's Sixth and Ninth Symphonies stand as sharply contrasting yet deeply connected reflections of a century scarred by violence, fear, and forced optimism. The Sixth Symphony, composed in 1939 at the height of Stalin's Great Terror, opens with a vast, searing Largo that unfolds like a requiem for a silenced society-mourning lost friends, broken lives, and collective suffering. It's bleak introspection is followed by movements of icy detachment and grotesque parody, where frantic energy and empty cheer mask a profound spiritual void. Through this unsettling trajectory, Shostakovich speaks with "secret freedom," revealing a truth that words could not safely express: a tragic meditation on human dignity under oppression. Written in 1945, the Ninth Symphony defies expectations of monumental victory music. Instead of triumphal bombast, Shostakovich offers a compact, ironic, and life-affirming work, brimming with wit, clarity, and subtle defiance. Beneath it's Haydnesque lightness and carnival spirit linger shadows of war, grief, and memory-solemn brass rituals, elegiac melodies, and moments of fragile reflection. In this recording, the Jancek Philharmonic Orchestra and Daniel Raiskin illuminate the symphonies' dual nature: tragedy entwined with irony, joy haunted by loss. Together, these works form a powerful portrait of resilience, humanity, and artistic truth in the face of history's darkest pressures.

This second volume of Johannes Brahms: Complete Works for Viola continues Mikhail Zemtsov's deeply personal exploration of Brahms's late chamber masterpieces, heard through the warm, human voice of the viola. Centered on works originally inspired by clarinetist Richard Mhlfeld, this album reimagines the Trio Op. 114, Quintet Op. 115, Zwei Gesnge Op. 91, and the Scherzo from the FAE Sonata from a new sonic perspective-one that reveals an intimate, unified string sonority and an expressive depth uniquely suited to the viola. Particularly striking is Brahms's instinctive use of the viola's lowest register, drawing the listener immediately into a world of introspection, tenderness, and inward poetry. More than a scholarly project, this recording is a heartfelt artistic statement, born from Zemtsov's conviction that the viola holds a special affinity with Brahms's musical language. By pairing the instrument with kindred voices-strings, piano, and the human voice-the album invites listeners to rediscover these iconic works as profoundly vocal, homogenous, and emotionally resonant creations. As the second chapter (Volume 2) in a complete cycle commemorating Brahms's legacy, this release offers not just an alternative version of familiar masterpieces, but a compelling re-illumination of their inner soul.

Shura Cherkassky was introduced to Nimbus by Wilfred Stiff, then a director of the London agent Ibbs & Tillett. Wilfred recognised a young label pushing ahead fast at the transition point between LP and CD, one with a fondness for artists whose careers were waning. Accordingly, he dispatched one of his most prestigious names to the Nimbus Studio. Cherkassky was at that time acknowledged as one of the 'great' generation whose undoubted king was Horowitz, but after a long, notable career that began in his mid-teens, his popularity in the concert hall and recording studio had fallen. Shura's late career was in need of a final boost. Cherkassky's first visit lasted four days - 31 January to 3 February 1981; the results of that session were released on LP, but never on CD. They are once again available in Volume 1 of this series (NI 7112). For this second session, once again he stayed in the big house, having taken one look at Monmouth's finest hotel - The King's Head - and declared, 'Oh no, I won't be happy here!'. The studio and piano, a 1969 Hamburg Steinway, were set up as before. It was a studio so completely unlike the characterless spaces he had famously grown to decry. Here there was no sterile barrier to his inspiration. The grand Victorian reception room at Wyastone Leys served as a spectacular performance space, it's full-height windows framing commanding views down the Wye Valley. Shura loved it, signing a copy of his Pictures at an Exhibition LP, 'To everyone in Nimbus with love and the most wonderful feeling of inspiration'.

Vincenzo Maltempo's considerable catalogue of recordings for Piano Classics includes a much-admired set of the two concertos by Brahms. According to Fanfare, 'Maltempo... plays with commanding technique, grand gestural sweep throughout, and real tonal bloom.' For this second volume of the composer's solo output for the piano, Maltempo has devised a compelling journey for the listener, from the noble and often heroic profile of the Ballades Op. 10 to the late and distilled collections Opp. 116-119, taking in en route the Variations on an Original Theme Op. 21 No. 1 and the eight Klavierstcke Op. 76. In his performances, Maltempo brings out this stylistic evolution of both piano-writing and harmony, enabling us to appreciate for ourselves the degree to which Brahms continually challenged himself to enrich and experiment with his style, as well as ruthlessly exercising on himself the red pen and the sharp ear which made him so shrewd a critic of fellow composers. The scholar Denis Matthews identified three phases, or styles, in Brahms, not necessarily equating to the conventional division of early, middle, and late: the architectural, contrapuntal, and lyrical. On the surface, beyond a more intense chromaticism and openness to dissonance, there is relatively little to separate the Ballades from the late works. Much the least-often heard piece in this collection is the Variations Op. 21, and the teasing ingenuity of Brahms's treatment of his theme - initially quiet and introspective - is based on a rigorous exploration of contrapuntal possibilities. The Variations date from a period immediately after his fateful meeting with Robert and Clara Schumann in Dusseldorf, when he found himself stretched to live up to the Schumanns' extravagant praise of him as the pre-eminent successor to Beethoven. They and others were captivated by the composer's own mastery of his instrument as a performer, too, and the Op. 21 Variations show Brahms moving on from the extrovert keyboard lionism of works such as the First Concerto while still using the variation principle to celebrate virtuosity as both a composer and a pianist.

This album features songs to poetry by 20th- and 21st-century writers, composed by an artist whose vocal-instrumental works stand at the heart of his oeuvre. A stripped-down, almost minimalist sonic language shapes a meditative, introspective atmosphere-one that encourages philosophical reflection beyond the album's overarching theme of love. The two singers, commanding expansive operatic range and color, bring heightened drama and emotional intensity, carefully building tension and captivating the listener from the first note to the last.

The incredible music on this album feeds into my lifelong fascination with musical connections, especially the complicated relationship between classical music and jazz. My dear friend Joe Makholm, whose pathfinding music I've been performing and recording for over 25 years now, is a master at exploring this occasionally uneasy marriage. In the groundbreaking set of pieces presented here, all superbly crafted and bubbling with inspiration, Joe is at his creative best in a decidedly jazz-centered collection that is full of straight-ahead swinging, deep expression, pianistic imagination, wit, and sophistication. -Willis Delony

IBS Classical presents a distinguished new release featuring violinist Valerie Steenken and pianist Ricardo Al lvarez, performing three major violin sonatas by Richard Strauss, Ottorino Respighi, and Manuel M. Ponce. Conceived as a journey across German, Italian, and Mexican traditions, the programme bridges late-Romantic lyricism and early-twentieth-century modern expressivity. Strauss's youthful Sonata in E-flat major, Op. 18, combines soaring melodic invention with symphonic breadth, while Respighi's Sonata in B minor unfolds as a grand, rhetorically charged architecture culminating in a majestic Passacaglia. Ponce's Sonata breve, written in Paris in 1930, distills neoclassical elegance and Mexican lyricism into a concise yet refined statement of style. In this recording, Valerie Steenken (Concertmaster of Spanish National Orchestra) and Ricardo Al lvarez (Professor at Reina Sofa School) offer performances of exceptional unity and insight. Steenken's luminous tone, phrasing of great naturalness, and expressive precision find in lvarez's pianism an ideal counterpart-sensitive, detailed, and dynamically sculpted. Their dialogue reveals a profound understanding of structure and sound, bringing each work's emotional core vividly to life. Through this project, IBS Classical reaffirms it's dedication to artistic excellence and to the renewal of essential chamber repertoire for violin and piano, presented here in a performance of rare coherence and expressive depth.

Stradivarius is pleased to present Premire by Julija Sadaunykait, Lithuanian pianist and winner of the Grand Prix at the Malta Valletta International Piano Competition. This album, marking Julija Sadaunykait's recording debut, takes listeners on an intimate journey into the musical world of this pianist, celebrated for her expressive depth and refined artistry. A listening journey through different creative worlds unfolds through celebrated pages of piano literature, with the performer intent on delving into the depths of the scores and capturing their extraordinary compositional textures. The album opens with Maurice Ravel's Miroirs No. 5: La valle des cloches, the last movement of the Miroirs cycle, a five-movement suite for piano composed between 1904 and 1905. The opening piece, which Ravel dedicated to the French pianist and composer Maurice Delage, is followed by Olivier Messiaen's Premire communion de la Vierge from Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jsus, one of the most famous works for solo piano in the contemporary repertoire, and Robert Schumann's Sonata No. 1 in F-sharp minor, Op. 11, composed between 1833 and 1836 and dedicated to Clara Wieck. This intense journey into the musical world of Julija Sadaunykait concludes with Sonata No. 1 by Australian composer Carl Vine, born in 1954. According to the first printed edition, the work was composed for the Sydney Dance Company and is characterized by energetic rhythms, unusual harmonic shifts, abrupt tempo changes, dynamic contrasts, and rich textures, all of which allow performers to fully explore their technical and emotional range.

A companion and friend of Dmitri Shostakovich. 1919-1996. "The unique magic of Mieczyslaw Weinberg's music is not easy to describe. Closely interwoven with his biography, which bore the painful marks of the upheavals of the 20th century, his compositions emerged as a musical reflection of his life. And yet, they resist clear-cut interpretations: Weinberg's music is too complex and ambiguous, as technically demanding as it is fascinating. At times, contradictions become audible-for instance, when Weinberg, in his darkest hours, finds a musical language that expresses lightness and joy. Such is the case in his Concertino Op. 42, composed in the summer of 1948, when the ever-growing antisemitism of the Stalinist regime, clearly palpable since the end of the war, began to affect Weinberg's life directly. At the same time, in the spring of 1948, the music scene came under the grip of government censorship as part of a propaganda campaign. At it's center stood Weinberg's close friend Dmitri Shostakovich... In March 1948, in an attempt to deflect suspicion, Weinberg wrote one of the obligatory and painful self-denunciations, acknowledging his "mistakes" and pledging to adapt his style to official expectations. As if to underscore these statements, he composed his Sinfonietta No. 1 Op. 41 around the same time-a work that stands out in Weinberg's oeuvre for it's straightforwardness and simplicity. Yet only a few months later, in June 1948, Weinberg composed the Concertino, Op. 42. Unlike the Sinfonietta, however, this composition can by no means be called a strategic work of political calculation..." (Excerpt from the liner notes by Verena Mogl)

Grounded in noble sensibilities, the sets reveal a portal to the idea of the Vergessene Weisen: the ideals of a veiled world. Here, the music becomes a lens for memory as a path that endures despite the relentless march of time.

Ireneo Fuser was born in Carbonera (Treviso) on 12 November 1902. In 1925, he graduated in organ at the Liceo musicale Benedetto Marcello in Venice under the tuition of Oreste Ravanello and later specialized in Rome with Fernando Germani. In 1927, he graduated in piano at the Conservatory in Parma and, in 1935, in composition at the Conservatory in Florence. In 1928, he won the competition to succeed Ulisse Matthey as organist at the Sanctuary of Loreto, a position he did not hold, however. He undertook a brilliant concert career that was marked by a broad repertoire, refined recording skills, great virtuosity, and musical sensitivity that made him one of the most important Italian organists of his generation. From the 1940s onwards, he has given organ recitals for Swiss radio and RAI in live or recorded Sunday programmes in Rome and Turin, which have been on the broadcast schedules for more than twenty years. At the same time, he carried out teaching activities first at the Licei musicali in Venice and Pescara and then in Bologna, where he was established in 1939 as an organ teacher at the Institute that three years later would become the Conservatorio G. B. Martini. A firm believer in the phonic excellence of the ancient Italian organ, he shaped his activity with the noble aim of enhancing the glorious period of Italian musical art of the past; among his countless musicological works, the anthology Classici italiani dell'organo (1955) is still considered a reference work today.

Wind Piano Trios brings together four outstanding works for oboe, bassoon, and piano, performed by the Tro Ausis March, one of Spain's most active chamber ensembles for contemporary and 20th-century repertoire. This release offers a compelling journey through nearly a century of music, from the neoclassical elegance of Francis Poulenc and Jean Franaix to the stylistic openness of Andr Previn and the vibrant contemporary voice of Jorge Santos. At the heart of the programme stands Poulenc's Trio FP 43 (1926), a cornerstone of the repertoire, combining wit, lyricism, and refined harmonic colour. Franaix's late Trio (1994) displays his unmistakable blend of clarity, humour, and rhythmic vitality, while Previn's Trio (1994) introduces jazz-inflected rhythms and cinematic lyricism, reflecting his unique crossover between classical, jazz, and film music. The programme concludes with Jorge Santos's Trio (2001), a work that fuses contemporary techniques with Latin and jazz influences, adding a distinctive modern perspective. Recorded at the Auditorio Manuel de Falla in Granada, this album combines artistic excellence with outstanding sound quality. Wind Piano Trios is an attractive release for distributors seeking high-level chamber music, strong repertoire value, and a balance between established masterpieces and contemporary works.

A compelling collection of works for oboe and piano composed by Polish composers during the first decade after World War II. Neoclassicism-marked by clarity of form, inventive harmonies, economical means of expression, and frequent folk-inspired elements-meets virtuosity, wit, touches of the grotesque, and moments of neo-romantic lyricism. In most of these pieces, the piano stands as an equal partner to the oboe, engaging in a brilliant, dynamic dialogue. This interplay comes vividly to life in the performances of Justyna Stanek, principal oboist of the NFM Orchestra, and Monika Kruk-outstanding chamber musicians affiliated with the Wroclaw Academy of Music.

With this album, we enter into the court of the Swedish Queen Christina (1626-1689), who distinguished herself with her passions for the arts and sciences, but also through her exceedingly extravagant court life. A few years before her spectacular abdication and return to Catholicism (1654), she had employed an Italian opera ensemble including the Roman singer Domenico Albrici and his 21-year-old son Vincenzo. The latter had already made a name for himself at home and, within a few years in Sweden, composed many excellent vocal works. Together with several instrumental pieces, these survive in the famous Dben collection at Uppsala University. From around three dozen titles, Manfred Cordes has selected a beautifully melodious anthology, which has become an unmistakable hallmark of Weser Renaissance.

The coming together of the percussionist and marimbist Vassilena Serafimova and the Quatuor Ardeo,(Ardeo String Quartet) the encounter of two worlds that inspire new repertoires as well as moods and impressions, recreated partly through original arrangements. This is a subtle balance between the marimba coupled with the vibraphone and the strings: the former, pulsating and silky, brings a more pronounced rhythmic dimension and occasionally takes on a concertante role; the latter offers a warm lyricism and a texture at times dense or transparent, but always supple. A delicate balance, too, when it comes to paying homage to the works without diminishing their original artistic strength. As the works and arrangements unfold, the journey takes shape like a voyage journal where age-old traditions meet fresh inspirations. Melodies in a Bottle aims to be less a programme than a passage, one of maritime or urban perspectives, of real or imagined landscapes, of music whose history is rewritten with every note. A meeting space where curiosity becomes an attractive driving force.

Pomponio Nenna was born in Bari in 1556 and studied there under Stefano Felis. He then moved to Naples, where he began his career as a composer in a stimulating spirit of emulation; Nenna and Carlo Gesualdo each influenced the other's madrigal style in their treatment of text, dissonance, and chromatic modulation. Nenna's vocal works are complemented here by a number of organ pieces by local composers such as Giovanni Maria Trabaci and Giovanni di Macque, transcribed here for a consort of viols.
