Following on from the successful release of Passacaglia on a Theme of Benjamin Britten and Other Organ Works (PFCD174-5), organist Simon Passmore returns to the organ of St. Ann's Church, Manchester, for this second volume of organ music by British composer Richard Pantcheff. This new disc comprises works for organ solo, as well as works written for organ with other instruments: Violin (Benedict Holland), and Flugelhorn (Neil Fulton). The programme contains highly melodic modal works, including the Sonata for Violin and Organ (Opus 74) and it's forerunner 'Agnus Dei' (Opus 41). The more contemporary Nocturnus I (Opus 90, No. 1) for Flugelhorn and Organ is complemented here by the solo organ work which completes the Nocturnus series of compositions, Nocturnus VI (Opus 90, No. 6). Both works were completed while the composer was living in South Africa. Lastly, the six Chorale Preludes (2021/No. 2) for solo organ are here recorded in full for the first time. Written during the depths of the pandemic, these sparse, elevated, works are like icons in music: where time seems to stand still, and the listener is immersed in the intense spiritual dialogue presented in the music. Simon Passmore is originally from Hexham, Northumberland. He was a chorister at Hexham Abbey where he received piano lessons from the Directors of Music, John Green and Michael Haynes, and later with Newcastle University's Head of Keyboard, David Murray. He completed a BMus at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, studying with Murray McLachlan, and went on to take a Postgraduate Diploma in Repetiteur Studies, supported by a full scholarship. Simon was Director of Music at St Ann's Church between 2015-2022, and had previously been organ scholar there from 2011, studying with the late Ronald Frost. Simon currently lives in Altrincham and works full-time at Chetham's School of Music as a staff pianist.

Bruckner's E Minor Mass and a selection of his profoundly beautiful motets were selected by Sir Stephen Cleobury as his last album at King's, recorded only a few months before his death. Denovali is very delighted to present the new album of the prestigious Swedish pianist and composer Matti Bye - known for his scores for "The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared", "Young Wallander", "Superswede", "Tove", "Everlasting Moments" among many others. Matti is also well known for his regular performances at various silent film festivals and screenings around the world, where you will see him perform solo and with artists such as Lau Nau and Anna von Hausswolff. Matti Bye's third album, "Capri Clouds", moves through the element of the air and further into space. A lone piano sounds, echoes - sometimes like a waltz. We have the sound of the wind with us and the sound of the sea below us as we fly, and above we hear the stars and planets spinning. A piano from the past, as if Satie met space - as if Spiritualized and Satie talked to each other across time and space. These songs go straight to the heart and to the senses, and create images in your head. Stories from your own memory bank, as well as new visions - music to lean into, meditatively and hopefully longing. But there is also an undertone of something dark and desolate. Musically, Matti Bye moves within the realm of neo-classicism, but he is also approaching romanticism. References to composers such as Schubert and Beethoven are to be found here, as well as to post-romantic bands such as Kraftwerk and The Cure. In this third album of a trilogy - the first was "Bethanien", the second "The Forgotten Land" - Bye continues his musical journey. Here we encounter a brighter and lighter production. So Fragile, So Blue is about something we all have in common; this beautiful planet Earth that we all call home. At the core of this project is William Shatner and his remarkable talent for storytelling. In 2021, Shatner made a historic journey into space on Blue Origin's rocket, New Shepard. Just before the launch, Shatner shared a meal with two old friends, Robert Sharenow and Dan Miller. For many years the trio had written songs together-firstly in person, and later over Zoom throughout the pandemic. "I met Robert and Dan for dinner and of course began to talk about writing a song about going up into space and made some notes. But then I went up and I came down and then I made some phone calls. One of the phone calls was to Robert and Dan. I said "You know, that song we started to write about space? Forget about it. It doesn't work." The experience was beyond anything we could have imagined. We have to write a song about it, but it's not the one we jotted down that Sunday. So, we started to write a song, encapsulating, distilling what I experienced going up into space. We called it 'So Fragile, So Blue' and it does distil everything I felt and saw." Later, the songs would take on a new form thanks to another long-term friend, Ben Folds, who was fascinated by Shatner's experience going into space. Folds, who is Artistic Advisor at the Kennedy Center, brought new collaborators to the project-the wonderful composer and orchestrator Jherek Bischoff and bluegrass violin virtuoso and composer Gabe Witcher, who wrote original underscoring for the songs to create new orchestral works. The friends' creation was brought to life by it's final contributors, conductor Steven Reineke and the National Symphony Orchestra, at the Kennedy Center in April 2022.
