Philippe Jordan ranks among the most established and moust sought-after conductors of his generation. As Music Director of the Paris Opera he performed the complete symphonies of Tchaikovsky in total three concerts at the Opera Bastille and the Philharmonie de Paris from October 2017 to May 2018. What makes this cycle special is Jordan's combination of the less well-known first three symphonies with the final three "great" symphonies in every concert. Jordan has chosen to bring together the third and sixth as they represent milestones in the symphonic ensemble. The second and fourth share a proximity in writing (one rewritten in 1879 reflects the other created in 1878); the first, the most imaginative, and the fifth, the most positive, constitute an introduction to the cycle. The Swiss conductor appreciates Tchaikovsky as one of the most important Russian composers and his aim was to perform the complete symphonies with his Paris Opera Orchestra. Nocturne (Live at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival) comprises three pieces performed live on a partly prepared piano, along additional pre-recorded soundscapes. "The live performance of 'Klavierstuck II' is a pensive improvisation using essential elements of the original piece. 'Nocturne' starts with the ambient sounds whilst the piano seemingly melts into the soundscape and eventually grows into a long meditative piano solo. 'Yonder' is a much more dramatic piece, dominated by the overwhelming sounds of church bells, a sort of "dies irai", radical, emotional and fiercely poetic."

How to begin? No beginning... never ending reverberation, Antoine Beuger writes in the accompanying notes to Leo Svirsky's River Without Banks. Dedicated to his first piano teacher Irena Orlov, River Without Banks is a mesmerizing, emotional collection of pieces that are simultaneously complex and fluid. The title River Without Banks comes from a chapter of musicologist Genrikh "Henry" Orlov's profound work Tree of Music. In said chapter, Orlov traces the history of sacred music from the Western and Eastern tradition and how the forms (of the chant, raga etc.) sought to eliminate the division between the physical and the spiritual-the bank and the river. Arranged for two pianos with accompaniment from strings, trumpet, and electronics, this is Svirsky's first piece to approach the history of the piano and the possibilities of the recording studio, and his deepest dive yet into exploring the instability of listening and it's transformation of musical semantics and affect. Like Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project, Svirsky overlays romantic musical gestures to create a lush unfamiliarity. No sooner than each track begins the next moment unfurls beneath it, cascading time and blurring perception of past and present. Akin to a multidimensional Rzewski thematic interpretation, Svirsky's music defies genre-classification or classical ideology while it's virtuosity clearly stems from somewhere from within disciplined traditions. Continuously revisiting, revising, and renewing it's emotional core, River Without Banks is less an album of songs than songs of a singular, unlocatable album. Performed by the composer with assistance from Britton Powell, Max Eilbacher, Leila Bordreuil, Tim Byrnes, and recorded by Al Carlson.

This second disc of the Chamber Music of Richard Pantcheff features works which were either written in the period the composer was living in South Africa, or have connections with that period in some other way. Given that at the time the composer went to live in South Africa his reputation had been built largely upon his by then substantial number of choral and organ works, the South African period was one where, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, instrumental and chamber music came into much greater focus. This was as a result of many of South Africa's leading musicians commissioning new works from him, and there being ample opportunity at Chamber Music series and Music Festivals for these new works to be performed. Of particular note in this regard were the Rand Club Chamber Music Series, and Music at Northwards, both highly successful concert series in Johannesburg.

Avner Dorman has fast become one of the most sought-after composers of his generation. In 2018, he received the prestigious Azrieli Prize for his Violin Concerto No.2 and his opera Wahnfried was nominated for a 2018 International Opera Award. Written in 2013 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, Letters from Gettysburg, a work scored for soprano, baritone, large chorus and percussion, is the centerpiece in this all-Dorman release. It is paired with two Dorman works commissioned by Orli and Gil Shaham. After Brahms is three intermezzos pieces for solo piano that cleverly extend the harmonic language of Brahms. Nigunim draws on the musical influences of Jewish song, hailing from locations around the world - Africa, the Caucasus, the Balkans and Central Asia.

These two ballets reveal a specific facet of Stravinsky's genius, his skill in pastiche.
