A luscious pair of late-Romantic chamber works by a little-known pupil of Giuseppe Martucci, in new recordings by an Italian ensemble with a notable track record of success in reviving such rarities. Born in 1875, Guido Alberto Fano emulated the model of his teacher Martucci in pursuing a multi-faceted career as composer, conductor, pianist and teacher. At the age of 30 he became director of the conservatoire in Parma before transferring, in 1916, to the Sicilian city of Palermo. A year later he wrote this powerful and turbulent Piano Quintet, which sets out in a broad, contented and Brahmsian vein of expression before venturing into more troubled and chromatically contemporary harmonies, to which a finale brings resolution via a noble chorale theme. At the Quintet's climax, this theme soars over the texture on a solo trumpet, in a stroke of instrumental imagination which anticipates Honegger's Second Symphony by two decades - and indeed the 45-minute Quintet has the dimensions of a 'veiled symphony' in the manner of Brahms's early chamber works and sonatas. Wistful, major-minor Brahmsian motifs and harmonies still permeate the String Quartet which Fano composed in 1941 - another distinctively 'wartime' work - but whether through age or experience they are suffused with a late-style radiance which brings the style of the Quartet closer to Richard Strauss and Debussy. The Ensemble Mark Rothko is a flexible line-up of Italian musicians who specialising in reviving forgotten chamber works of the late 19th and early 20th century. Their discography includes albums dedicated to Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Karl Weigl, and this collection of Guido Alberto Fano marks their debut on Brilliant Classics.

A quartet of German Baroque masters at their most daring and outlandish, exploring the harmonic quirks of mean-tone temperament on the organ. Manuel Tomadin has assembled an impressive library of Baroque-era albums on Brilliant Classics, including critically acclaimed surveys of Bach and comprehensive documents of the surviving output of lesser-known names such as Christian Erbach and Vincent Lubeck. 'A very attractively conceived and well-executed Bach organ recital disc,' noted Fanfare of Manuel Tomadin's diverse recital (95786): 'All recital discs should be this thoughtfully conceived and well done; cordially recommended.' In the same vein, this new recording leads the listener through both unfamiliar and well-known names and works, drawing out the original meaning of the term Baroque as 'the broken pearl' - something strange and exquisite. At a time before the 'even-tempered' system of tuning homogenised the spaces between different intervals - some of them being narrower or wider than others in what is known as 'mean-tone' temperament - composers such as Buxtehude might exploit those idiosyncrasies to produce harmonies which were deliberately awkward or dissonant. Manuel Tomadin has chosen the Praeludium in E BuxWV141, the Praeludium in F sharp minor BuxWV146 and a chorale prelude, Nun bitten wir den heiligen Geist BuxWV208, to illustrate this point. The most unfamiliar name here is Johann Heinrich Buttstett (1666-1727) - Capellmeister in the central-German town of Erfurt - who defended conservative theories of musical evolution as a writer and teacher, but also produced works which sound quite radical for their time, such as an extensive Praeludium and Canzona in D minor. JS Bach is represented here by a pair of organ preludes and fugues (BWV534 in F minor and BEV547 in C major) from his Weimar period - relatively early in his career, but no less experimental for that. The search for harmonic extremes was continued by the most radically inventive of his sons, Carl Philipp Emanuel, and Manuel Tomadin demonstrates this continuity with the chorale prelude 'Ich ruf zu dir'. A fascinating and unique collection, performed on the authentic and historically significant Hinsz organ of 1738 at the Broederkerk in the Dutch town of Kampen.

Swedish vocalist Anna Pauline celebrates over two decades in jazz with her new album, Lucky To Be Me, out June 26 on Storyville Records. The album is a culmination of years of artistic exploration, mentorship, and collaborative discovery. It features standout performances, including a trumpet solo by jazz legend Randy Brecker on Pauline's original composition "Just One Song" and a duet with Janis Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer on the title track. This 10-track recording includes one original composition and nine interpretations of jazz standards, cinematic favorites, and musical-theatre classics. The repertoire reflects Pauline's deep engagement with the Great American Songbook, the narrative richness of musical theatre, and the improvisational possibilities of jazz. Each track captures a moment of musical conversation and spontaneous discovery, anchored by Pauline's luminous voice and emotional depth. The project gained momentum in 2023, when Pauline met Siegel in Sweden through pianist Mattias Nilsson. Their first duet sparked a musical understanding that quickly evolved into mentorship and collaboration. Siegel later introduced Pauline to pianist, arranger, and producer John Di Martino, whose arrangements and artistic direction shape the album's sound. For Pauline, Lucky To Be Me realizes a long-held dream while marking a personal and musical turning point. Working closely with Di Martino, Pauline blended her Nordic sensibility with the rhythmic vitality and storytelling of American jazz. This creative dialogue has produced arrangements that honor the original material while highlighting her distinctive interpretive voice. This collaborative approach shapes the album's repertoire, which combines an original composition with reinterpretations of classics from jazz, film, and musical theatre. Tracks like Leonard Bernstein's "Lucky To Be Me" and Michel Legrand's "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg" showcase Pauline's capacity to inhabit each song fully, while Rodgers & Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music" and Josef Myrow's "Autumn Nocturne" highlight her subtle phrasing and improvisational creativity. After Hugo Kaun ended his American adventure and returned to the Old World, he began to pour the exotic events of his life into two symphonic tone poems. These have been in our catalogue since late 2023 under the title I'm Urwald (In the Primeval Forest). He soon rose to become one of the most highly regarded German composers (thanks primarily to his noteworthy works for male choirs), and in 1905 turned his attention to programme music. Commissioned as six quartets, only two were completed. We open Wait Till the Clouds Roll By with the second quartet in F major. It's first movement balances clarity with a misty, exploratory development. The Menuet feels rhythmically unstable before dissolving into the dreamy Trio. The Andante's serene theme and variations momentarily suspend time before the Finale jolts us awake. In working with historical editions-full of contradictions-we embrace the interpretive possibilities they offer, knowing a recording captures only one moment in an evolving tradition. In the G major quartet, a static yet expectant opening gives way to fragmented, lively exchanges. The Adagio offers spaciousness and sublime calm. Haydn's virtuosic Presto movements inspired us to experiment with tempo, including the daring 1854 metronome markings by Karol Lipinski. Wait Till the Clouds Roll By reflects our belief that music, like Alice's journey, helps us navigate a world of beauty, confusion, humor, and transformation. Through Haydn and Shaw, we experience portals between eras, emotions, and perspectives. The Butter Quartet consists of four musicians brought together by their mutual love of vibrant historically-informed performance of string quartets. They first formed during their studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, but soon developed a passion and dynamic that extended beyond their conservatory years. Their presence helped shape generations of Danish jazz musicians and forged a lasting bond between American jazz and Copenhagen. Carsten Dahl stands as one of the most significant figures of the post-Montmartre generation. Jazz history is defined by great rhythm teams, Ray Brown & Ed Thigpen, Ron Carter & Tony Williams, NHØP & Alex Riel among them. In our time, Reuben Rogers and Gregory Hutchinson stand firmly in that lineage. Rogers' sound draws deeply from the Oscar Pettiford school: grounded, resonant and melodically rich. Hutchinson's musical DNA was shaped through his work with Betty Carter and in Ray Brown's trio. Together, they share a rare, almost telepathic connection and an elastic sense of time that lifts everything around them. As the highlight of the Bruckner Year 2024, Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 9 was performed by the Altomonte Orchestra St. Florian under Rémy Ballot on the occasion of the Brucknertage St. Florian. The special feature of this evening was the presentation of the recovered sketches from the Finale, which were played in their rough-draft form and without special arrangement. Work on the Finale was already far advanced at the time of Bruckner's death on October 11, 1886; among the fragments are, among other things, the beginning of the movement, the first, second and third main themes, parts of a development section, and the aforementioned three themes in the recapitulation-partly as a short-score sketch, partly as completely orchestrated passages. Performing these fragments allows one only to imagine what monument Anton Bruckner would have erected once again with the Finale of his Ninth Symphony. This memorable evening can now be experienced by the music world.

Alessandro Stradella loved taking risks of an amorous nature. These put him in danger repeatedly. He was wounded several times, and they ultimately caused his premature death when he was murdered on 25 February 1682 in Genoa. This unsolved crime story inspired no fewer than six operas between 1837 and 2017, but it also cast a shadow over the Bolognese aristocrat's actual talent, who could soften just about any soul with his talent for melodies and his refined dramatic sensibility. He was not only renowned in the opera house, but also with his intimate chamber cantatas that often summarized the content of a whole life as captivating snapshots: Seneca's demise, the fall of commander Belisarius, Nero's delirious triumph in the face of Roman conflagration, and the Addio of Marcus Antonius may possibly have saved Stradella - if his murderers would have listened to his music.
