Spectacular western movies and moments to remember from and with the Maestro himself. Ennio Morricone composed over 400 scores for cinema and television, as well as over 100 classical works. This concert from 2004 with the Munchner Rundfunkorchester is one of the very few recordings where he conducts his own music. The album contains a representative collection of his most famous film music including The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, A Fistful of Dynamite, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, The Untouchables and many more.
For his 2011 recording of the Grieg & Liszt Piano Concertos, Sir Stephen Hough travelled to Grieg's hometown of Bergen to join forces with Andrew Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Upon it's original release, the Sunday Times named Hough's album "one of the Liszt bicentenary's prime releases, from Britain's greatest living magician of the keyboard." Available on 180g vinyl.

JOHN RUTTER: A CLARE COLLEGE CELEBRATION
HARMONIA MUNDI

John Rutter is one of the most iconic figures of English choral music today, a symbol of it's vitality and high standards. Graham Ross brings together the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge (the celebrated choral institution that the composer himself directed in the mid-1970s) and The Dmitri Ensemble to pay homage to this great gentleman of modern musical history with a wide range of his works, some of them recorded here for the very first time.
With more than 125 concertos to his credit, Telemann was one of the pioneers of this genre that had flowered in Italy. Combining daring, humor and emotion, he particularly delighted in exploring the virtuosity of the violin and it's gift for imitation and it's lyricism. Alongside other works of his where the violin also takes centre stage, Isabelle Faust and the Academie fur Alte Musik Berlin showcase several jewels from his output of unimagined opulence.
Morton Feldman's cycle, The Viola in My Life, is four individual compositions that utilize various instrumental combinations with the viola. The works is a beautiful succession of delicate sounds during which Feldman, through the interplay of sound and silence, alters and transforms time. "This work has accompanied me like a secret, an almost silent meditation on what the viola means in my life. Through it I have experienced how much this instrument connects me to listening, to patience, to inwardness. Here Morton Feldman is not composing in order to shine, but so as to make us hear the infinitesimal, the unspeakable - that is what has touched me profoundly, and I want to share it with the listeners." (Antoine Tamestit)
To celebrate their 20th anniversary in style, Les Siecles and Francois-Xavier Roth have chosen to dazzle us with the distinctive colors of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Paris. This concert, recorded in the legendary surroundings of the Theatre des Champs-Elysees, explores shimmering orchestral works by Debussy, Lalo, Dukas and Roussel.
Rose Ever Blooming honours the role of Mary in the story of Jesus, highlighting the importance of family and the eternally strong bonds between mother and son. Inspired by poetry by Patricia Monaghan, we have constructed a libretto featuring twelve of these poems. Traditional Christmas carols are woven together with this poetry, acting as musical touchstones while also supporting the themes and narratives in Monaghan's poetry. Each divine moment of the Christmas story is presented here with a human counterpart. These poems portray Mary in all her humanity and as a reluctant hero of the Christmas story. In Rose Ever Blooming, Mary's story is presented as a reflection from the end of her life, beginning with the Annunciation and ending with her own list of Beatitudes, praising the ordinary and the everyday blessings we take for granted. We see the onset of motherhood as a metamorphosis from ordinary girl to one who will "bring forth the future. " A new Magnificat, not praising an entity outside ourselves, recognizes the divine within all of us. It was refreshing to tell Mary's story through her eyes, and Monaghan's brilliant portrayal of her character shines through in these sensitive and poignant poems.

(Fireworks) "The resulting sound is splendid, helped along by judicious editing the brass and percussion do often kindle a glorious blaze which is caught beautifully by the recording, an extravaganza which can scarcely fail to become a collectors' piece." (Concerto a due Cori) "chief praise to Mr. Mackerras for uncovering this splendid Concerto for two wind bands - a transcription of some of Handel's arrangements from oratorio and organ concertos - I expect to see it widely performed." (Water Music) "orchestral playing throughout is quite outstanding: the strings wonderfully expressive, the horns excel. A splendid bargain." (Penguin Guide)

Irida Associates U.S.A., an obscure and short-lived record label formed by composer-performer Jerry Hunt (1943-1993), offers a glimpse into the revelatory world of new music and composition in the artist's native Third Coast. Based first in Dallas and later in Hunt's home outside the rural town of Canton, Texas, Irida presented the innovative and daring experiments-into aleatoric methods, environmental acoustics, improvisation, homemade technologies, and more-pursued by Hunt and his select collaborators, primarily working in or near Texas between 1979 and 1986. Irida's brief and compact output-seven non-sequentially numbered LPs released in unknown quantities-shared work by artists whose practices often challenged the limitations of vinyl recording. Originally reissued by Blank Forms as a set of seven LPs plus an eighty-two-page booklet, these seven LPs are now available individually. "Mapping" here refers to the interest of composer Larry Austin (1930-2018) in the adaptation of external structures (such as mathematical figures or shapes observed in nature) for the purpose of generating compositional material. This concern was shared by his PhD composition students at the university of North Texas, three of whom-Rodney Washka II, Gene de Lisa, and Robert Michael Keefe- are represented on Cartography. Each experimented with the possibilities of the Synclavier digital music system at the university's Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia, where Hunt was devising his own work, "Fluud," on the synthesizer at the same moment. Throughout the '80s, Austin developed a particularly strong interest in fractal geometry and the work of French mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot, an excitement that is reflected in the naming of de Lisa's "Missa Fractalis" and Keefe's "Fractalis Balinesus." de Lisa adapted his piece from data collected by parsing Latin text, while Keefe, a jazz guitarist, structured his work around the Pythagorean monochord. Waschka's "Euwe Suite" translates a number of chess games by the Dutch player Max Euwe into five uncanny short-form compositions, where each square on the board is assigned a different pitch and is sounded at a distinct timbre depending on the piece that lands on it. His "Runes," accompanied in performance by 35-mm slides, was adapted from the ancient symbols of it's namesake. The three composers, occasionally joined by fellow student Gary Cattley, performed these and other works throughout Texas in 1986 and 1987, including during a short tour in summer 1986 billed as the "New Cartographers."

New York, 1978, kindred composers Philip Corner and Carles Santos meet at the Bosendorfer piano of Charlemagne Palestine to record four-hand piano versions of Corner's pieces "Chord" and "Gong!". The result is a long-flowing distillation of the source of the two composers' affinity: avant-garde practice of austere artistic devotion at play with perfect imperfections of the uncontainable human spirit.

From Bach to Brahms, Mahler to Messiaen, any composer worth their salt has written for the pipe organ. And so when James McVinnie put the idea to Tristan Perich to write for the king of instruments, it was perhaps not a surprise that the New York contemporary-classical composer had already considered the possibilities of marrying his signature 1-bit electronic music with an instrument that has reverberated down the centuries. The resulting piece that started with a conversation between the two back in 2016 is undoubtedly Perich's most ambitious work to date. Infinity Gradient is an hour-long symphony in seven movements for organ and 100 speakers in 1-bit audio, recorded for this album at London's Royal Festival Hall at Southbank Centre, where McVinnie was artist-in-residence throughout 2024. The 100 speakers are set across the stage - a recurring element in Perich's work for over two decades, this time featuring four giant subwoofers, 24 medium-sized speakers, and 72 small speakers - against the backdrop of RFH's imposing organ; the piece is as visually striking to look at as it is to listen to. (In addition to being available in stereo, Infinity Gradient will also come in multichannel Dolby Atmos.)
