Returning to his beloved bassoon Peter Whelan takes a fresh look at the two surviving works by Mozart for the instrument: Concerto K. 191 and Sonata K. 292. These attractive early works were most likely composed during the composer’s time in Salzburg. The concerto is the earliest of his woodwind concertos, and has become a staple work for every bassoon player: it showcases the tremendous capabilities of the pre-nineteenth-century instrument, its agility, extraordinary range and tone color. Whelan and his virtuoso Ensemble Marsyas are playing from the original printed parts since the autograph score has not survived. While the sonata’s original medium is uncertain – for two bass instruments or bassoon and keyboard – Whelan makes it his own with Kristian Bezuidenhout performing the continuo line. Ensemble Marsyas rounds off the program with Mozart’s most dramatic work for winds, the Serenade in C minor. Composed in Vienna for the Harmonie (the bassoon’s natural home), it served as a musical laboratory where Mozart could experiment with the virtuoso and lyrical possibilities of his Viennese wind soloists who later animated his greatest operas.

True Colours is the new album by versatile pianist Dave Arch and acclaimed guitarist John Parricelli, two musicians who have known each other and played together since the early days of their careers. Individually they have worked with a broad range of artists from across the musical spectrum, including Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Alexandre Desplatt, Kenny Wheeler and Charlie Haden amongst many others. Dave is also the Musical Director of numerous TV shows, including BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Collaborating on all the compositions, the result is an intimate, organic and atmospheric collection of pieces drawing on their love of jazz, film music, folk and pop. In addition to serving up these highly personal treats, the album also features master percussionist Paul Clarvis throughout, and award-winning vocalist Daisy Chute on two tracks. Beautifully recorded and mixed by ex-Abbey Road Chief Engineer Haydn Bendall – whose painting graces the album cover – this kaleidoscopic music will undoubtedly lift the listener’s spirits.

In his Four-Part Consorts, John Jenkins (1592–1678) parades his much-vaunted contrapuntal prowess that is marked by a fanatical devotion to the equality of four independent parts. Frequently turbulent and given to frenetic activity, this music charts the interactions of a band of like-minded spirits obsessed with lively struggle and restless soul-searching. The incessant peregrinations of Jenkins’s roving harmonies are heady stuff and make moments of calm and valediction all the more deserved and poignant. This recording brings to fruition Phantasm’s long-standing project to issue Jenkins’s complete consorts for four to six viols complemented by ‘Jenkins: Six-Part Consorts’ and ‘Jenkins: Five-Part Consorts’ (both released by Linn). In over half of the four-part pieces, the viols are joined by organist Daniel Hyde whose sensitive shaping of original accompaniments on a fruity seventeenth-century-style instrument helps nurture Jenkins’s grandiose ambitions.
