A Taste Of Soul, Vol. 1
A TE, O CARA: Stephen Costello sings Bel Canto / Orbelian, Kaunas City Symphony
-----
REVIEW:
Stephen Costello provides a consistent quality of performance across the collection well chosen to display his stylish and engaging voice to significant effect. The opening track, one of the most celebrated arias in all opera, is Tonio’s act two cavatina and cabaletta ‘Ah, mes amis’ from Donizetti’s opéra comique, La fille du régiment. Costello agilely and astutely manages the manifold challenges of this aria that requires no less than nine high C’s, which is a treat when performed as admirably as this. From Donizetti’s masterwork L’élisir d’amore described as a melodramma giocoso, Nemorino’s act two romanza, Una furtiva lagrima is one of the most attractive of all tenor arias. As Nemorino singing passionately to Adina believing a love potion is working Costello performs beautifully, with clarity and particularly fine phrasing, making every word count. Another Donizetti work, a further highlight and a particular favourite of mine, is Spirto gentil from La favorita a grand opera that deserves increased recognition. Here Fernando in the final act discovers that Leonora has been the king’s mistress and sings brokenheartedly at the betrayal of his love. This is a splendid display of Costello’s most attractive tone and the tenor achieves his high notes resolutely and with relative ease. Throughout Costello receives first class support from Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra under Constantine Orbelian which feels entirely sympathetic.
Recorded at Kaunas Philharmonic the engineering team excel providing sound that has both satisfying clarity and balance. As I have come to expect from Delos the documentation accompanying the album is first class. The valuable booklet notes by Lindsay Koob places each aria in the context of the opera. I’m delighted that full sung texts are included together with English translations which are helpfully placed alongside. My only grumble concerns the playing time of just under fifty minutes, very short by today’s standards.
Beautifully performed, recorded and presented, Stephen Costello’s bel canto album will complement any opera collection.

A te, Puccini / Angela Gheorghiu
Signum Classics is proud to present Romanian-born soprano Angela Gheorghiu’s first album on the Grammy award winning label. Described as “the world’s most glamorous and gifted opera star” (New York Sun), Ms. Gheorghiu’s magnificent voice and dazzling stage presence have established her as a unique international opera superstar.
Her new album, released to mark the anniversary of celebrated composer Giacomo Puccini, brings together a collection of well-known arias and songs spanning many years of his career. The album features a World Premiere Recording of the recently rediscovered aria “Melanconia”, which is most probably from 1883 and not 1881 as previously thought. Other notable works on the recording are “Salve Regina” from Le villi, “Storiella d’amore” as well as the title track “A te,” composed by Puccini at just 16 years old.
A Tenors Valentine / Carreras, Domingo, Pavarotti
The crowd-pleasing repertoire and enormous artistry of the singers make this a special collection. It's always a thrill to hear Domingo sing Puccini, but it's particularly delightful to hear an aria from the lesser-known 'Gianni Schicchi.' Bel canto repertoire is also served by Domingo in his graceful rendition of "Una furtiva lagrima" from Donizetti's 'L'Elisir d'amore.' Luciano Pavarotti is a stellar Verdian and the sublime "Quando le sere al placido" from 'Luisa Miller' allows the great tenor to glow in Verdi's unmatched lyricism. Carreras is stirring in two arias from Puccini's 'Tosca' and dazzles in excerpts from Bizet's 'Carmen.'
An added bonus is the addition of sopranos Eva Marton, Renata Scotto and Agnes Baltsa in duets with Domingo and Carreras.

A Thurber Carnival - Original Broadway Cast
“Both the freshest and funniest show on Broadway, and it establishes some sort of standard in skill, taste and comic dexterity ... In style and taste A Thurber Carnival is wonderful – a glorious world of meaningful nonsense.” ATKINSON, The Times
“Completely captivating ... between the meaningful silences and the great guffaws there are dandy chuckles ... A Thurber Carnival is sheer delight ... The whole thing is dandy. And very advanced.” KERR, Herald Tribune
“About as agreeably comic as it can be ... very often we find ourselves laugh- ing at what was said a couple of lines ago ... From the opening dance ... we feel perfectly adjusted to the dry cli- mate of (Mr. Thurber’s) unostentatious humor ... (and) comfortably participating in the chaos of our times.” HEWES, Saturday Review
“A tonic anthology of the great man’s work compiled by himself, and easily the funniest show on Broadway ... music which is unfailingly spruce and witty.” TYNAN, The New Yorker
“If there is one proposition upon which every intelligent English-speaking man, woman and child is in hearty agree- ment, it is that James Thurber is incom- parable as wit, humorist and sage ... (A Thurber Carnival) is a civilized joy ... there is cause for nothing but delight.” WATTS, Post
“A joyous, magnificently lunatic festival ... anybody who shuns this house of laughter is crazy...” CHAPMAN, News

A Traditional Christmas Carol Collection, Vol. 2 / The Sixteen

It's no secret that if you're looking for a well-filled, thoughtfully programmed disc of Christmas choral music, you won't go wrong with any of The Sixteen's recordings. In 2006 this oft-lauded group led by founder Harry Christophers released a Volume 1 program of traditional carols, and this year (2010) decided to augment that release with a collection of 20 more favorites (including a few lesser-known pieces). Performed with the knowing style of a seasoned, professional British choir, these songs, hymns, and carols (all very loosely categorized here as "carols")--such gems as Holst's Masters in this hall, Poston's Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, and Darke's beloved In the bleak mid-winter--ring in the season intensified and made more meaningful by the choir's authority and respect for the music, its revered tradition, and with an obvious true love for its sound and inherent spirit.
Although Christophers mentions in the notes that selections were drawn from the 1928 Oxford Book of Carols, and certainly such pieces as the Gloucester Wassail, the Wexford Carol, and In dulci jubilo were at least partially lifted from that source, the provenance of many others is not so clearly evident (Of the Father's heart begotten, for example, isn't included in the 1928 OBC), although in some cases the popular "green" and "orange" carol books may have been consulted.
At any rate, these arrangements are all artful and refreshingly unadorned--in the best "traditional" realizations; where there is organ, its contributions are always tasteful, imaginative, and appropriate to support and/or enhance the singers. And as for the singers, well, this is one of the great, world-class choirs, its uniquely rich, vibrant sound characterized by pure-voiced sopranos and its contingent of male altos. The production and sound, from London's St. Giles Church, Cripplegate, presided over by the first-rate team of Mark Brown and Mike Hatch, is excellent. A solid and satisfying addition to any Christmas music library.

A Tribute to Bach
A Tribute to Bach / Steger, La Cetra Baroque Orchestra Basel
This album already carries the intention in its title: "A Tribute to Bach" is meant to be a deep bow by the world-renowned recorder player Maurice Steger to the great master of the music world; Johann Sebastian Bach. For his Bach project; Maurice Steger has chosen six compositions that follow six different musical genres and placed the recorder at the forefront of solo instrumentation. In doing so; he places himself in the tradition of Bach himself; who has been proven to have repeatedly undertaken new instrumentations for his works in the course of his life. The result in terms of sound is fascinating: Bach becomes a convincing recorder player through Maurice Steger's interpretation.
A Tribute to Benny Goodman
A Tribute to Benny Goodman / Wojciechowski, Borowicz, Orkiestra Kameralna
This is a special release, inspired by crossing boundaries, looking for the universal music language, and referring to the notion of pure beauty. In each of these spectacular tracks the clarinet plays the leading role. This recording is dedicated to the memory of Benny Goodman, a legend of the American jazz and the ‘King of Swing’, who elevated the clarinet playing to the rank of art. Similar to Elvis Presley, Goodman significantly contributed to the popularization of ‘black’ music among the white audience in the times of race segregation proving that the art and beauty are able to cross the boundaries between people dictated by disdain and prejudices.
A Tribute to Charlie 100% Jazz, Swing and Boogie-Woogie
A Tribute to Danny Granados
Clarinetist Danny Granados was a remarkable musician as well as a passionate arts administrator. While serving as chief financial officer of the Houston Symphony Orchestra, he made this recording with the Fidelis String Quartet (all orchestra members) and friends. But the album was put on hold when Danny became ill with cancer. After he passed away last year, the recording’s remaining players resolved to release it as a memorial tribute to their dear friend and colleague. Hence this very moving and attractive album of masterpieces by Johannes Brahms, Astor Piazzolla and Osvaldo Golijov: a program that explores common threads between the works of three prominent, yet very different composers. The result is a release that will both ravish listeners’ ears and touch their hearts.
