2019 release. The Danish String Quartet's Grammy-nominated Prism project links Bach fugues, late Beethoven quartets and works by modern masters. In volume two of the series, Bach's Fugue in Bb minor from the Well-Tempered Clavier (in the arrangement by Viennese composer Emanuel Aloys F�rster) is brought together with Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 130 and Alfred Schnittke s String Quartet No.3 (composed in 1983). As the quartet explains, A beam of music is split through Beethoven's prism. The important thing to us is that these connections be experienced widely. We hope the listener will join us in the wonder of these beams of music that travel all the way from Bach through Beethoven to our own times. A summer's evening in Berlin. The usual traffic jams and ranks of double-parked tourist buses can't be far away, but Max Raabe seems to be in his own little bubble. He's winding his way along by bicycle, casually adjusting his bowtie as he rides, leaving the Brandenburg Gate behind him. Meanwhile, at the Admiralspalast, where they re about to record their latest programme, the Palast Orchester are already on stage and playing the first bars of Kleine Lugen, as their leader coolly cycles along towards the theatre.

Daniel Hope was born in Durban in 1974. When he was six months old, his father, the distinguished novelist, poet and anti-apartheid activist Christopher Hope, was finally granted an exit visa. The family went first to Paris, then to London, where Daniel's mother Eleanor was engaged by Yehudi Menuhin to be his secretary, later becoming the celebrated violinist and conductor's long-time manager. In 1978 Hope began to study the violin in London with Sheila Nelson. Six years later he commenced his studies at the Royal College of Music with Itzhak Rashkovsky, Felix Andrievsky and Grigory Zhislin.

Seong-Jin Cho - "Debussy (Images I & II; Suite Bergamasque; Children's Corner)" With "a poetic sensibility that evokes the fantastical sound world of the early Romantics" (San Francisco Chronicle), 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition winner Seong-Jin Cho explores the music of Claude Debussy as the 100th anniversary of the composer's death approaches. Seong-Jin Cho's third album on Deutsche Grammophon features Debussy's most popular works and cycles, such as Images I & II, Suite Bergamasque and Children's Corner.

The music of George Enescu continues to be a source of discovery for me. As the Fates would have it, though, his Chamber Symphony for 12 Instruments was already familiar to me from a recent Ondine recording by Hannu Lintu conducting the Tampere Philharmonic, which I reviewed only as recently as 36:2. In that review, I stated that the work was new to me and that I had no other versions against which to compare it. Well, that situation didn't last long, for here is another performance of the piece, which, on my first hearing of it under Lintu, didn't make a very favorable impression. Despite it's low opus number, the Chamber Symphony is Enescu's final work. The composer's close friend, Marcel Mihalovici, was called upon to complete the score after Enescu suffered a severe stroke in 1954. There are, of course, far, far more than 33 works in Enescu's catalog; it's just that most of them are without opus number. Considering the more exotic scoring of Schreker's Chamber Symphony, also on this disc, instrumentation for the Enescu is fairly conservative, consisting of flute, oboe, English horn, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, violin, viola, cello, double bass, and piano. Still, this is not an easy work to assimilate. The mood is dark, often menacing, and sometimes of a bitter, burlesque character, as in the trumpet solo at the beginning of the last movement. The style is somewhat reminiscent of Schoenberg's pre-12-tone Expressionist works, with passages here and there that sound like they could have come from a scene in Berg's Wozzeck. This much I can say: Enescu's Chamber Symphony found me in more receptive ear to this performance by Wolynec and the Gateway Chamber Orchestra than did the performance by Lintu and his Tampere ensemble. - Jerry Dubins for Fanfare

This box set highlights his zeal for Romantic repertoire and features the complete Mendelssohn "Songs without Words" cycle, recorded in 1975 and previously available only in Japan. Eschenbach will receive the world-renowned "Ernst von Siemens Music Prize" on May 31, 2015 for his merit as an exceptional pianist and conductor.

Boulez spent a lot of time with the Cleveland Orchestra, as their Principal Guest Conductor and enjoying annual residencies there. This 8-CD set is heavy on Pierre's fellow Frenchman, with 4 CDs of Debussy ("La Mer," "Trois Nocturnes," "Images," "Printemps" and more) and Ravel (a disc of piano concertos plus "Sheherazade," "Le Tombeau de Couperin," "Pavane" and more).
