PIANO CONCERTOS NOS.6, 8 & 9

2019 release. Like their acclaimed ECM release Small Town of 2017 which The Guardian called "wistful and mesmerizing... tonally ingenious and haunting" Epistrophy by guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Thomas Morgan was recorded at New York City's Village Vanguard. The album once again captures the rare empathy these two players achieve together in this intimate environment. There are further poetic takes on pieces from the duo's beloved Americana songbook ("All in Fun," "Red River Valley," "Save the Last Dance for Me"), as well as another intense version of a composition by Paul Motian ("Mumbo Jumbo"), an artist whom both the guitarist and bassist knew well. Frisell and Morgan communicate the essence of Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life" and the Frank Sinatra hit "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning," so much so that the famous words seem to hang in the air even without a singer. At the center of the album is a pair of pieces by Thelonious Monk: the funky, angular "Epistrophy" and the ruminative ballad "Pannonica." And as with "Goldfinger" on Small Town, Frisell and Morgan offer a glowing duo interpretation of a melody-rich John Barry title tune from a James Bond film "You Only Live Twice."

2020 release. Joel Ross' follow-up to his widely acclaimed debut KingMaker, which made Best of 2019 lists in NPR Music, Rolling Stone, and more. The album was co-produced by Walter Smith III and features Ross' Good Vibes band with Immanuel Wilkins on alto saxophone, Jeremy Corren on piano, Kanoa Mendenhall on bass and Jeremy Dutton on drums, plus harpist Brandee Younger on several tracks. "This record is a culmination of our maturing - as people, as a band, within the music - it's about figuring out who we are."

Reissue. Wishful Thinking, originally released in 1984, was Earl Klugh's 10th studio album. It features the wide variety of musical styles Klugh is comfortable playing and composing - blues, soul-jazz, smooth jazz, reggae tinged rhythms, classical - augmented by orchestrated arrangements. Saxophonist David Sanborn guests on "The Only One for Me".

Max Raabe is so hip, so cool, and so German, it hurts. Never more so than on his new masterpiece KUSSEN KANN MAN NICHTALLEINE, a title which roughly translates as ONE CANNOT KISS ALONE. Now, the singer and entertainer from Berlin who has enchanted audiences as the leader of his Palast Orchester in New York's Carnegie Hall, at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, or during the wedding of Marilyn Manson and Dita von Teese in Ireland, finally steps into the international arena not quite alone, but definitely on his own.

2021 release. Pianist and producer James Francies follows-up his acclaimed 2018 debut Flight with the expansive opus Purest Form, an eclectic new album that taps into the essence of his artistry across 14 tracks that conjure a world of sounds and textures, interpreting love, grief, frailty, and fortitude. In addition to Burniss Travis on bass and Jeremy Dutton on drums, the album features alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, vibraphonist Joel Ross, guitarist Mike Moreno, and vocalists Peyton, Elliott Skinner, and Bilal.

After the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1968, racial tensions across the country rose. Palo Alto, a largely white college town in Cali, wasn't immune. Danny Scher, a junior at the high school, had a dream to have Thelonious Monk perform and help bring about racial unity the community while raising funds for the International Committee. After many twists and turns, the triumphantly successful concert eventually happened. Against a backdrop of racial tension and political volatility, the concert took place on October 27, 1968, and was recorded by the school's janitor. The 47-minute album features Monk's regular touring band of tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist Larry Gales and drummer Ben Riley. It also highlights his touring repertoire, which constituted his finest compositions. The CD comes with a poster and booklet.

RE:WORKS PIANO

Swept Away sees the top-class quartet of pianist Eliane Elias, double-bassist Marc Johnson, drummer Joey Baron and saxophonist Joe Lovano commune over music that is engaging and sensual, lyrical and swinging. Brazilian-born star Elias previously joined ECM veterans Baron and Lovano on Johnson's 2005 ECM album, Shades of Jade, which reaped praise far and wide. The New York Times enthused over the luminescence created by the close partnership between Elias and Johnson, while the Village Voice said the album was shimmering yet it's lusciousness has all sorts of tensile strength. The same words suit Swept Away, which includes a brace of melody-rich Elias compositions, ranging from the easy-flowing title track to the smoky romanticism of Be Is for Butterfly and after-hours vibe of It's Time. Johnsons brightly grooving, Eastern-tinged When the Sun Comes Up is another highlight, and the album closes with Johnson's solo bass treatment of the old American folk song Shenandoah. Swept Away is music of depth that is disarmingly easy to love.

Guitar virtuoso Julian Lage makes his Blue Note debut with an album that weds incisive, expressive songwriting with the profound interplay of his trio featuring Jorge Roeder and Dave King. The trio planned to record after a Village Vanguard residency in January 2020 but were delayed by the pandemic. Lage retooled the songs in light of the summer's lockdown and protests over social justice. By the time he recorded the album in August, the tunes had taken on a deeper air of mystery and searching.
