Music for piano solo (2017-2019) by Caspar Rene Hirschfeld (*1965) was premiered by Joshua Rupley in 2023 and deals with transience or the emergence, change and decay of all phenomena. In addition to a virtuoso technique, the work also requires a highly developed sense of sound in the quietest registers and the courage to remain completely calm in the quiet passages.

This collection of music inspired by English folksongs by Clive Osgood continues a centuries-old tradition of music handed down through the generations, each one beautifully reimagined in a fresh and modern realisation. Holding a vital part in our cultural heritage, these English folksongs are rooted in the nation's maritime history, and also explore the melodies that have been adopted by the church and become timeless favourites as part of the rich repertoire of sacred hymnody.

The special vibrations that the Hohenstaufen Chamber Music Festival generates are directly audible in the contents of this anniversary CD box, which consists solely of live performances. The choice of music ranges far and wide through all periods and genres: from Johann Sebastian Bach through key works of the Viennese Classical school and the German Romantics to French Impressionist compositions and classics of the Modern era. There are jazz numbers and contemporary works too, a further pointer to the ethos of the Hohenstaufen Chamber Music Festival, which does not call for tradition to be upheld on principle but aims at a constant rediscovery of the world and it's inhabitants through their sounds and timbres, no matter whether they come from "old" or "new", "serious" or "light" music. Hohenstaufen doesn't pigeonhole things like that; it believes in taking your partners to make "good" music. Music is good, quite simply, when it moves us, uplifts us, challenges us. "Music must never be comfy," to quote the pithy conclusion that Helmuth Rilling, to whom the Festival is greatly indebted, once drew. "It must stir people, touch them personally, give them food for thought." If the pieces brought together here can achieve this, the Hohenstaufen Chamber Music Festival will have received the biggest twentieth birthday present it could have.

The pianist Alexandra Sostmann is not only known for her polished Bach playing, but also for her concert and CD programmes that trace developments and cross-connections in music history. In her latest CD recording, she remains true to this approach as she spans the period from the Baroque to the present day, seeking to shed light on the concept of music as a medium between immanence and transcendence that can be found in almost every culture. The poems of the Sephardic poet Moses Ibn-Ezra, written a thousand years ago, were set to music by the great Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. In this recording, Anne Haasch and Natalie Perez present his remarkable song cycle "The Divan of Moses Ibn-Ezra", released by GENUIN and paired with outstanding solo guitar works by the composer. Castelnuovo-Tedesco, one of the most influential guitar composers of the 20th century, created a masterpiece in the tradition of the great wanderer cycles of Schubert and Vaughan Williams. Anne Haasch and Natalie Perez vividly showcase the expressive depth of this evocative yet meticulously crafted music - a poignant memorial against displacement and a heartfelt homage to Jewish identity and the guitar.

Many of us old-timers remember George "Big G" Coleman in the late 50s and 60s performing with almost every single legendary name in that golden era of American jazz, a.o. Miles Davis. Coleman who turns 90 this year is still going strong and surrounds himself with the elite artists of younger generation including the leader of this album Brian Charette (Hammond-B3). This album can be seen as the sequel to 2018's "Groovin' With Big G" (SCCD 31857) again with Charette in charge of keeping the music flowing. "This is a mellow date, a blowing date to be sure but Charette's B-3 rarely goes the funk route and is closer to Wild Bill Davis. With mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozena and pianist Mitsuko Uchida, two world stars join hands on L'extase, a collection of songs by Claude Debussy and Olivier Messiaen. Debussy was Messiaen's life-long idol, and their songs are equally colourful, sumptuous, sensual, and occasionally exotic. The album derives it's name from the sultry song 'C'est l'extase langoureuse' from Debussy's Ariettes oubliees, and this song cycle is combined with his Chansons de Bilitis and Cinq poemes des Baudelaires, while Messiaen is represented by the second book of his Poemes pour Mi, a declaration of love for his first wife Claire Delbos. This recording demonstrates the profound affinity of both performers with French music, as well as their congeniality as musical partners. With L'extase, star mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozena presents the seventh album of her exclusive collaboration with Pentatone, after having presented Il giardino dei sospiri, Soiree (both 2019), Nostalgia (2021), Folk Songs (2023), the title role in Handel's Alcina and Czech Songs (both 2024). One of the most revered artists of our time, Mitsuko Uchida is known as a peerless interpreter of the works of Mozart, Schubert, Schumann and Beethoven, as well for being a devotee of the piano music of Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, and Gyorgy Kurtag. American pianist David Korevaar, a distinguished artist known for his profound interpretations and exceptional versatility, has unveiled his latest monumental achievement: a complete recording of Ludwig van Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas which will be published digitally in six volumes by Fall 2025. To kick things off, David Korevaar is giving his musical Beethoven business card with a double album that will also be available physically: "Heroic to Hammerklavier". In addition to the sonatas Opp. 53, 54 and 57, it also includes the Sonata Op. 101 and the famous "Hammerklavier Sonata" Op. 106. This ambitious Beethoven project not only marks a significant milestone in Korevaar's illustrious career but also offers a fresh and deeply personal perspective on one of the cornerstones of classical music repertoire. Korevaar's interpretation stands apart for it's intellectual depth and emotional resonance, reflecting years of scholarship, performance, and a deep connection to Beethoven's spirit. Even if the name Vicente Lusitano is hardly known today, he is probably the most important composer in Portuguese history. And he is probably also the first black composer whose works appeared in print: Born around 1520 in Olivenca, Portugal, he is described in sources as a 'pardo' (Portuguese for 'half-breed'), his mother was probably of African descent. Lusitano was a Catholic priest for a time and came to Rome in the entourage of the Portuguese papal ambassador. In Italy, he soon made a name for himself as a music theorist and his theoretical writings appeared in various publications. In 1561 he converted to the Protestant faith and went to France and Germany, where his traces are lost. Only a few of Lusitano's works have survived, including his "Liber primus epigramatum" printed in Rome in 1551 a collection of a total of 23 magnificent sacred motets for 5 to 8 voices with direct references to Josquin Desprez. The Ensemble Arte Minima has recorded this collection, which will be released as world premiere recordings. The first part is now available and contains seven motets for 6 and 8 voices.
