One of the 1960s' great international art-house sensations, Woman in the Dunes was for many the grand unveiling of the surreal, idiosyncratic world of Hiroshi Teshigahara (The Face of Another). Eiji Okada (Hiroshima mon amour) plays an amateur entomologist who has left Tokyo to study an unclassified species of beetle found in a vast desert. When he misses his bus back to civilization, he is persuaded to spend the night with a young widow (Kyoko Kishida) in her hut at the bottom of a sand dune. What results is one of cinema's most unnerving and palpably erotic battles of the sexes, as well as a nightmarish depiction of the Sisyphean struggle of everyday life-an achievement that garnered Teshigahara an Academy Award nomination for best director. Includes four short films from the director, documentary on the director and novelist Kobo Abe's collaboration, original trailer and essay by film scholar on Audie Book on 2 DVDs or 1 Blu-ray Disc. 1964/b&w/147 min/NR/fullscreen. 715515185011 CCIN2670DVD 37073596 18.95 29.95 .32 CRITERION COLLECTION DIGITAL VIDEO DISC MOVIE DRAMA 08/23/2016 https://mediacdn.aent-m.com/prod-img/500/96/3056196.jpg 0
CRITERION COLLECTION CAT PEOPLE/BD The first of the horror films producer Val Lewton (The Body Snatcher, I Walked with a Zombie) made for RKO Pictures redefined the genre by leaving it's most frightening terrors to it's audience's imagination. Simone Simon (La bete humaine) stars as a Serbian emigre in Manhattan who believes that, because of an ancient curse, any physical intimacy with the man she loves (Kent Smith) will turn her into a feline predator. Lewton, a consummate producer-auteur who oversaw every aspect of his projects, found an ideal director in Jacques Tourneur (Out of the Past), a chiaroscuro stylist adept at keeping viewers off-kilter with startling compositions and psychological innuendo. Together, they eschewed the canned effects of earlier monster movies in favor of shocking with subtle shadows and creative audio cues. One of the studio's most successful movies of the 1940s, Cat People raised the creature feature to new heights of sophistication and mystery. 715515185813 CCIN2674BR 37073626 25.27 39.95 .23 CRITERION COLLECTION BLU-RAY MOVIE HORROR / SCI-FI / FANTASY 09/20/2016 https://mediacdn.aent-m.com/prod-img/500/73/3067873.jpg 500
CRITERION COLLECTION STORY OF THE LAST CHYSANTHEM/BD This heartrending masterpiece by Kenji Mizoguchi (Ugetsu) about the give-and-take between life and art marked the director's first use of the hypnotic long takes and eloquent camera movements that would come to define his films. The adopted son of legendary kabuki actor Kikunosuke (Shotaro Hanayagi), who is striving to achieve stardom by mastering female roles, turns to his infant brother's wet nurse (Kakuko Mori) for support and affection and she soon gives up everything for her beloved's creative glory. Featuring fascinating glimpses behind the scenes of kabuki theater in the late nineteenth century, The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum is a critique of the oppression of women and the sacrifices required of them, and the pinnacle of Mizoguchi's early career. 715515186018 CCIN2676BR 37073640 25.27 39.95 .18 CRITERION COLLECTION BLU-RAY MOVIE DRAMA 09/13/2016 https://mediacdn.aent-m.com/prod-img/500/75/3067875.jpg 15

CRITERION COLLECTION BLOOD SIMPLE/DVD The career-long darkly comic road trip through misfit America of Joel and Ethan Coen (Inside Llewyn Davis) began with this razor-sharp, hard-boiled neonoir set somewhere in Texas, where a sleazy bar owner sets off a torrent of violence with one murderous thought. Actor M. Emmet Walsh (Blade Runner) looms over the proceedings as the slippery private eye with a yellow suit, a cowboy hat and no moral compass, and Frances McDormand (Fargo) gives a cunning debut performance that set her on the road to stardom. The tight scripting and inventive camera work that have marked the Coens work for decades is all here, as cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld (Raising Arizona) trades black-and-white chiaroscuro for neon signs and jukebox colors that combine with a haunting score by Carter Burwell (Barton Fink) to lurid and thrilling effect. Blending elements from pulp fiction and low-budget horror flicks, Blood Simple reinvented the film noir for a new generation, and marked the arrival of a filmmaking ensemble that would help to transform the American independent cinema scene in the 1980s. 715515186315 CCIN2679DVD 37081539 18.95 29.95 .27 CRITERION COLLECTION DIGITAL VIDEO DISC MOVIE MYSTERY / SUSPENSE / THRILLER 09/20/2016 https://mediacdn.aent-m.com/prod-img/500/78/3067878.jpg 83
CRITERION COLLECTION SHORT CUTS/BD The work of two great American artists merges in Short Cuts, a kaleidoscopic adaptation of the stories of renowned author Raymond Carver by maverick director Robert Altman (McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Nashville). Epic in scale yet meticulously observed, the film interweaves the stories of twenty-two characters as they struggle to find solace and meaning in contemporary Los Angeles. The extraordinary ensemble cast includes Tim Robbins (The Player), Julianne Moore (Far from Heaven), Robert Downey Jr. (Chaplin), Jack Lemmon (Some Like It Hot), and Jennifer Jason Leigh (Margot at the Wedding) all giving fearless performances in what is one of Altman's most compassionate creations. 715515187213 CCIN2688BR 37064709 25.27 39.95 .24 CRITERION COLLECTION BLU-RAY MOVIE COMEDIES 10/18/2016 https://mediacdn.aent-m.com/prod-img/500/20/3079420.jpg 500
CRITERION COLLECTION LONE WOLF & CUB/BD Based on the best-selling manga series, the six intensely kinetic Lone Wolf and Cub films elevated chanbara to bloody, new heights. The shogun's executioner, Itto Ogami (Tomisaburo Wakayama), takes to wandering the countryside as an assassin along with his infant son Daigoro (Akihiro Tomikawa) and an infinitely weaponized perambulator helping those he encounters while seeking vengeance for his murdered wife. Delivering stylish thrills and a body count that defies belief, Lone Wolf and Cub is beloved for it's brilliantly choreographed and unbelievably violent action sequences as well as for it's tender depiction of the bonds between parent and child. 715515188517 CCIN2694BR 37081560 63.24 99.95 .52 CRITERION COLLECTION BLU-RAY MOVIE ACTION / ADVENTURE 11/08/2016 https://mediacdn.aent-m.com/prod-img/500/77/3089877.jpg 8
CRITERION COLLECTION KUROSAWA'S DREAMS/DVD Unfolding in a series of mythic vignettes, this late work by Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai, Ran) brings eight of the beloved director's own nighttime visions, informed by tales from Japanese folklore, to cinematic life. In a visually sumptuous journey through the master's unconscious, tales of childlike wonder give way to apocalyptic visions: a young boy stumbles on a fox wedding in a forest; a soldier confronts the ghosts of the war dead; a power-plant meltdown smothers a seaside landscape in radioactive fumes. Interspersed with reflections on the redemptive power of art, including a richly textured tribute to Vincent van Gogh (played by Martin Scorsese), Akira Kurosawa's Dreams is both a showcase for it's maker's imagination at it's most unbridled and a deeply personal lament for a world at the mercy of human ignorance. 715515188814 CCIN2697DVD 37064754 18.95 29.95 .33 CRITERION COLLECTION DIGITAL VIDEO DISC MOVIE FOREIGN FILM [DUB OR SUBTITLE] HORROR / SCI-FI / FANTASY 11/15/2016 https://mediacdn.aent-m.com/prod-img/500/80/3089880.jpg 128
CRITERION COLLECTION ONE-EYED JACKS/BD A western like no other, One-Eyed Jacks combines the mythological scope of that most American of film genres with the searing naturalism of performance by Marlon Brando (On the Waterfront, The Fugitive Kind), all suffused with Freudian overtones and male anxiety. In his only directing stint, Brando captures the rugged landscapes of California's Central Coast and Mexico's Sonoran Desert in gorgeous widescreen, Technicolor images, and elicits from his fellow actors (including Karl Malden and Pina Pellicer) nuanced improvisational depictions of conflicted characters. Though overwhelmed by it's director's perfectionism and plagued by production setbacks and studio re-editing, One-Eyed Jacks stands as one of Brando's great achievements, thanks above all to his tortured turn as Rio, a bank robber bent on revenge against his one-time partner in crime, the aptly named Dad Longworth (Malden). Brooding and romantic, Rio marks the last, and perhaps the most tender, of the iconic outsiders Brando imbued with such remarkable intensity throughout his career. 715515189316 CCIN2702BR 37081584 25.27 39.95 .21 CRITERION COLLECTION BLU-RAY MOVIE WESTERNS 11/22/2016 https://mediacdn.aent-m.com/prod-img/500/85/3089885.jpg 500
