The album was drawn from two different sessions each featuring a different quintet line-up. A March 7 date found Mobley with trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Butch Warren, and drummer Philly Joe Jones who deliver thrilling performances of the Mobley originals "Up a Step" and "Old World, New Imports." Mobley returned to Van Gelder Studio on October 2 with Jones once again on drums plus trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Andrew Hill, and bassist John Ore to lay down takes of Mobley's skittering tunes "Three Way Split" and "No Room for Squares" in addition to two remarkable Morgan tunes: the gorgeous ballad "Carolyn" and the grooving "Me 'N You." 33-year-old Joe Pass was discovered by Pacific Jazz producer Dick Bock playing in the house band of the Synanon drug rehabilitation house. Soon after, he was at the label recording with a variety of leading artists including Bud Shank and the Jazz Crusader. This compilation (covering his first 2 years at the label) contains material with his own quartet, Gerald Wilson's Orchestra, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Les McCann and the Sounds of Synanon. Ron Carter needs no introduction in the jazz world is a claim beyond controversy. In Brazil, the people there call him "the bass player of Brazil", Two selections, the famous "Samba de Orfeu", and "Manha de Carnaval", come from the Brazilian canon, but the rest are originals inspired by Carter's Brazilian experiences. For all his selections Ron wanted to use songs "with melodies so fabulous you feel like singing along-something that's been missing in jazz lately".

Best Of The Capitol Years is an odd compilation, largely because two of it's eight lengthy tracks come from sessions where the alto saxophonist was a sideman, not in the band.

Dinah was at the peak of her Dinah Shore Chevy Show fame when she recorded this intimate 1959 session with the master Previn at the piano. Newly remixed, first time on CD!

Move Your Hand is Lonnie's most soulful and most sampled Blue Note album. With a quintet fronted by saxophonists Rudy Jones and Ronnie Cuber, Lonnie even makes Donovan's "Sunshine Superman" groove. Added to the CD is the one remaining tune from this session, "Dancin' in An Easy Groove," which made it's first appearance on last year's Lost Grooves collection.

LOVE IS HERE TO STAY delivers heart swells aplenty. Singer Sandy Stewart and pianist Bill Charlie are a mother and son duo to watch for.

SOLO PIANO isn't entirely accurate; there are a couple of songs that feature accompaniment. However the star of this concert recording is Chucho's piano, the jazz musician's transcendently utilized instrument.
