Mussorgsky composed ‘Pictures At An Exhibition’ (1874) in memory of his friend, the painter Viktor Hartmann, who’d died in 1873. + Maurice Ravel wasn’t the first to mix his orchestral palette with Mussorgsky’s pianistic colors, but his version has justly stood the test of time. + Here is a rare opportunity to compare the two versions side by side, with Alexander Warenburg at the piano and Igor Markevitch, a celebrated interpreter of Pictures, conducting. Disc 2 also features Tchaikovsky’s delightful The Seasons, similar in intention but ultimately very different to Mussorgsky’s Pictures.
