Pressed on 180-gram white marbled vinyl, this premium edition revives a historic 1969 Paris session from the iconic BYG/Actuel catalog-an essential statement from a visionary musician and activist, now reissued in it's best quality ever. Restored & remastered from the original tapes by Nick Robbins, it features a new and insightful essay by author & music journalist Kevin Le Gendre. The LP edition presents the original gatefold sleeve and artwork meticulously recreated with a sleek matte laminate finish, along with a double-sided insert. Awarded Audiophile Album of the Month by Jazzwise, March 2023, and hailed as "A must for Shepp fans as well as free-jazz aficionados" by Kevin Whitlock - Jazzwise. Among the many African-American jazz musicians who arrived in Paris in the late '60s, saxophonist Archie Shepp was arguably the most influential. Still residing in the French capital today, he became a key figure in the European jazz scene, forging strong collaborations with artists like German pianist Joachim Khn. Archie Shepp recorded several landmark albums for BYG, with Yasmina, A Black Woman standing out as one of the most compelling-both musically and intellectually. The title track is a powerful tribute to a "soul sister" with an Afro-Arabic name, signaling a deliberate shift away from Eurocentric narratives. Shepp's impassioned performance is matched by an extraordinary lineup that bridges hard bop and the avant-garde. Saxophonist Hank Mobley and drummer Philly Joe Jones-two hard bop legends-share the stage with boundary-pushing soloists like pianist Dave Burrell, trumpeter Lester Bowie, and saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell, both of whom were members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. The result? A true jazz supergroup. This remarkable ensemble delivers a dynamic repertoire that reflects Shepp's deep engagement with the entire spectrum of Black American music, from blues and swing to free improvisation, while embracing African rhythms and post-colonial themes. The album radiates defiant energy yet also reveals moments of profound romanticism and tenderness-a testament to Shepp's artistry and vision.

Awarded Audiophile Album of the Month by Jazzwise, March 2023, and hailed as "A must for Shepp fans as well as free-jazz aficionados" by Kevin Whitlock - Jazzwise. Florida-born saxophonist, composer, poet, actor, and playwright Archie Shepp was one of the most powerful voices of politicized Black culture in the late '60s-a time of radical thought and social upheaval. After relocating to Paris, Shepp recorded a series of groundbreaking albums, including Blas, which explored themes of freedom, racial equality, and the deep roots of African-American music. Blending gospel, blues, and avant-garde jazz, the album featured the mesmerizing vocals of Jeanne Lee and members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, creating a powerful fusion of jazz, poetry, and radical politics. Blas defies categorization, moving fluidly across eras and influences-what Shepp called "pre-jazz" as much as "free jazz." From a graceful reprise of Duke Ellington's Sophisticated Lady to the propulsive rhythms of Touareg, inspired by his transformative experience at the 1969 Pan-African Festival in Algiers, Shepp's vision was always expansive. Black music has a dynamic relationship with it's past-what was once old becomes new again, resonating across generations. If Blas teaches us anything, it's that younger artists will always feel the spirit of their predecessors, both in life and beyond. As Duke Ellington put it: "All God's chillun got rhythm."

Occupying a unique place in the history of black music, Sun Ra took the big band aesthetic of his role model Duke Ellington into thrilling new territory. A pianist and keyboard player with an ear for uncommon timbres, a profound interest in a wide range of non-Western cultures as well as the scope of electronics and homemade instruments, Sun Ra led his Solar-Myth Arkestra featuring fine players such as saxophonists John Gilmore, Danny Davis and Marshall Allen, as well as the charismatic singer June Tyson. Together they created a timeless body of work: The Solar Myth Approach Vol. 1. This album is a grab-bag of tracks from various undocumented US sessions in the 60s, while some possibly date to the late 50s. It puts a typically subversive slant on composition and arrangement in which texture and atmosphere, often conjuring up ancient ceremony and ritual, are as important as any model of theme and improvisation. Sun Ra's use of a Moog synthesizer just made his palette all the more enticingly polychromatic. This remastered version, meticulously restored from the original tapes, provides the opportunity to enjoy the finer points of Sun Ra's music and reveals more layers with every listen. More than half a century after it's creation, The Solar Myth Approach Vol. 1' has become a never-ending story.

CD DELUXE EDITION - CD digi-sleeve echoes the vibe of the original LP & includes a 16-page booklet & printed inner bag - New & insightful essay by author & music journalist Kevin Le Gendre. 55th Anniversary Remastered Edition of Archie Shepp's iconic Live at the Panafrican Festival... 'Live At The Panafrican Festival' is one of the most thought-provoking entries in Archie Shepp's sprawling discography precisely because of the pivotal moment in time it captures. Archie Shepp has made many Afrocentric statements in his long distinguished career but this meeting with Algerian and Touareg musicians in 1969 ranks among his greatest artistic achievements. The backdrop was the inaugural Pan African Festival Of Culture that took place in Algiers in July 1969 in order to promote solidarity among African nations at a time when many were emerging from the yoke of colonialism and some were still fighting for freedom. Their struggle chimed with the Black Power movement in America, which the likes of Archie Shepp vocally supported. Accompanied by compatriots, trombonist Grachan Moncur III, trumpeter Clifford Thornton, pianist Dave Burrell, double bassist Alan Silva and drummer Sunny Murray, Archie Shepp blows with both fiery, bluesy passion and soulful tenderness on lengthy pieces in which the Touareg percussion and double reed horns create dancing rhythms that regularly turn into a deep trance groove. Joining the two groups are poets Ted Joans and Don Lee, who deliver thought-provoking verse on the significance of the occasion, declaring emphatically that the African-Americans have come home to Africa, the land they consider to be the heartland of what is known as jazz. On the album are two concerts that took place at the front of the Ketchaoua mosque and at the Atlas Cinema. It swarms, it screams, it moves, it dances. Archie Shepp and the musicians are in the middle of a crowd in trance, creating a frenetic atmosphere which assures the listener a completely immersive adventure. This newly remastered version of 'Live At The Panafrican Festival' provides an opportunity to enjoy historic music that was in the vanguard of collaborations between African-American and African artists. Archie Shepp and the Touaregs embodied an ideal of unity across the Black Diaspora that still resonates strongly to this day.

As the name suggests it was a grouping of artists who prioritized originality, and saxophonist-composer Anthony Braxton was one of the most significant individuals in it's ranks. For the subsequent 50 years he would prove daringly adventurous in his concepts and performances, and B-X0 NO-47A remains a classic title in his vast discography. The album saw him lead a group that included fellow AACM members, trumpeter Leo Smith (before he took the name Wadada), drummer Steve McCall and violinist Leroy Jenkins, yet there was such a wide array of instruments used on the session that the small group had a big sound. Anything from chimes and logs to harmonica and darbuka, as well as the intriguingly named 'sound machine', enabled the quartet to fashion a singular textural palette. Anthony Braxton and his colleagues were set to become pivotal figures in the avant-garde or 'New thing' movement that had broken with the prevailing conventions of the jazz industry. This definitive remastered version of the album provides an opportunity to enjoy the unique nature of Braxton's vision as never heard as well as the priceless chemistry between him, Smith, Jenkins and McCall. They made historic music which has stood the test of time.

- Historic recording session in the vanguard of collaborations between African-American and African artists - Restored & remastered from the original tapes by Nick Robbins - New & insightful essay by author & music journalist Kevin Le Gendre - LP's original gatefold sleeve & artwork faithfully reproduced with classy matte laminate finish.

The definitive remastered edition of his second studio album, restored and mastered from the original tapes. Presented in a deluxe gatefold sleeve with an insert featuring a new and insightful essay by author and jazz specialist Kevin Le Gendre. The birth of the Association for The Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in Chicago was a significant cultural event at the tail end of the 60s. As the name suggests it was a grouping of artists who prioritized originality, and saxophonist-composer Anthony Braxton was one of the most significant individuals in it's ranks. The Art Ensemble's daring finale to their BYG Actuel trilogy, captured in the heart of Paris, 1969-a seismic moment in free jazz history, now reborn in it's ultimate remastered edition, lovingly restored from the original tapes, wrapped in deluxe packaging, and enriched with fresh insights from acclaimed writer John Masouri. Reese and the Smooth Ones was captured during the same revolutionary Paris session as Message to Our Folks, but stands apart as a two-part, 40-minute odyssey of unchained invention. Arriving in Paris just days before recording, the Ensemble-Lester Bowie, Roscoe Mitchell, Malachi Favors, and Joseph Jarman-landed with nothing but their instruments, ideas, and a fierce determination to create. Funded by the proceeds of Bowie's personal sacrifice, their journey from New York was a leap of faith that sparked an artistic revolution. Their Paris performances stunned audiences with a bold fusion of free jazz, spoken word, Dadaist theatre, and Afrocentric consciousness, setting a new precedent for what music could be. This deluxe reissue celebrates a defining moment in the Art Ensemble's legacy-raw, urgent, and uncompromising. It's an essential document for longtime fans, collectors, and anyone interested in the outer edges of jazz, politics, and sound.

A Jazz Landmark of the Black Diaspora Reborn First released in 1971 as part of BYG Records' groundbreaking Actuel series, Jacques Coursil's Black Suite remains one of the boldest expressions of the Black Diaspora's creative and political awakening. Recorded in Paris on June 10, 1969, this visionary work now returns in a newly restored and remastered edition, revealing it's full depth and clarity for the first time in decades. Featuring a transatlantic ensemble - Jacques Coursil, Anthony Braxton, Arthur Jones, Burton Greene, Beb Gurin, and Claude Delcloo - Black Suite bridges the radical spirit of the American avant-garde and the intellectual fire of postcolonial Europe. Across two long, meditative movements, Coursil transforms jazz into a language of liberation, evoking the writings of Frantz Fanon, Lopold Sdar Senghor, and Aim Csaire as well as the fierce energy of the Civil Rights era. "Black Suite is a work of Black Excellence." - Kevin Le Gendre Born in Paris to Martiniquan parents, Coursil embodied the dialogue between African, Caribbean, and African-American identities, turning sound into philosophy and music into movement. With it's blend of intellect, emotion, and resistance, Black Suite stands alongside the seminal works of Pharoah Sanders, Eddie Gale, and Frank Lowe - timeless statements of self-definition and artistic freedom. Half a century later, Black Suite still speaks powerfully to our time: a sound of struggle and pride, of beauty and becoming - still unbroken.
