CHARLES MINGUS / MINGUS At the time of this recording, Mingus had been working regularly with the piano-less quartet of Eric Dolphy, Ted Curson and Dannie Richmond. The same group featured on the 1960 Candid release, Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus. The Mingus album, also recorded that year, features one track, "Stormy Weather," recorded with that same quartet, and two tracks recorded with a larger group featuring piano and additional horns. Of note, "MDM (Monk Duke & Me)" consumes the majority of this album. The piece consists of three intertwining themes - Duke Ellington's "Main Stem", Thelonious Monk's "Straight, No Chaser", and Mingus' "Fifty First Street Blues." Released in 1961, and recorded in the fall of 1960 by Candid A&R and Producer Nate Hentoff at the Nola Penthouse Sound Studios. The LP includes extraordinary liner notes written by Hentoff, giving a context and insight that adds to the experience of hearing these magnificent performances.

How Time Passes - Don Ellis - A fascinating blend of jazz and contemporary classical influences, How Time Passes is the debut album from the envelope pushing trumpeter and composer Don Ellis. Known for his extensive musical experimentation, particularly in the area of time signatures, Ellis began his long career in the New York City's post bop and avant-garde jazz scenes of late 1950s. Most notably he appeared on Charles Mingus' Mingus Dynasty, and albums by George Russell and Maynard Feguson. But he also worked with, among others, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Lionel Hampton, and Woody Herman. On subsequent albums, Ellis would take an even wilder direction. Here, on his first recoding date as a band leader, the experimentation begins. Ellis stretches the boundaries of bop-based jazz playing with time, tempo and meter. It is the start of his exploration of Third Stream - a fusion of jazz and contemporary classical music. The album title itself - How Time Passes - was taken from an article written by the controversial German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen on the "function of time." The exceptional section features Ron Carter on bass, the underrated Jaki Byard on piano and saxophone, and Charlie Persip on drums. The LP includes extraordinary liner notes by Candid A&R man and producer Nat Hentoff, and noted musician, historian and writer Gunther Schuller - the originator of the term "Third Stream" - giving a context and insight that adds to the experience of hearing these extraordinary performances.

Color Changes is considered by many to be one of the finest albums by trumpeter and pioneer of the flugelhorn in jazz, Clark Terry. Rather than have the usual jam session with the stellar sidemen he'd assembled, Terry utilized specific arrangements by Yusef Lateef, Budd Johnson, and Al Cohn for the date. At the time of this recording, he had recently finished a stint with Charles Mingus' group and one can hear the subtle influence that association had on these sessions. The result is an album which ranges through many moods and many textures, which is why the album was titled, Color Changes.

NEA Jazz Master, Toots Thielemans, is widely considered to be the preeminent jazz harmonica player. It is safe to say that before him, the harmonica in jazz was simply not done, and Thielemans can be credited with legitimizing the instrument in the genre. Born in Brussels, Belgium in 1922. Theileman's excelled on accordion as a small child, before picking up the guitar as a teenager after hearing Django Reinhart. Along the way, he taught himself to play harmonica as a hobby. In 1948, during a visit to the US, he sat in on guitar with a jazz group at small club in New York and was "discovered." Engagements soon followed with the likes of Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones and more. As the story goes, in response to a musicians' union restriction, Thielemans was forbidden to play guitar at a gig. So, he pulled out his harmonica. The rest, as they say, is history. He went on to have a long and prolific career on the instrument, as both a band leader and session musician. With his unique sound, he became a go-to for film scores in the 1970s (The Pawn Broker, Midnight Cowboy). Perhaps most notably, Thielemans is unconsciously known to generations for having played the melody on Sesame Street's famous closing theme. Organized as a purely jazz session, the date here prominently features a young Joanne Brackeen on piano. It is perhaps Brackeen's presence that makes this set so interesting. As an avant-garde player she provides the vehicle for Thielemas to explore more advanced ideas. The album covers a wide range of material, including two originals by Brackeen, alongside standards by Coltrane, Ellington, Mercer and Mancini.

Four-time GRAMMY-winning, NEA Jazz Master Terri Lyne Carrington and GRAMMY-nominated vocalist Christie Dashiell present We Insist 2025!, a bold reimagining of the seminal 1961 album We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite. Originally created by Max Roach in collaboration with Abbey Lincoln and lyricist Oscar Brown Jr. We Insist! Commemorated the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation and served as a rallying cry during the civil rights movement. Recognized by the Library of Congress and cited among the most essential jazz recordings in history, it's message remains as vital and urgent today as it was when it was released in 1961. Carrington and Dashiell's reimagined version honors this legacy while expanding it's sonic palette, blending jazz with influences from gospel, neo-soul, funk, Afro-Latin, West African, and blues traditions. The album features an extraordinary lineup of musicians, many of whom are Candid recording artists, including Weedie Braimah, Milena Casado, Morgan Guerin, Simon Moullier, and Matthew Stevens. A special guest appearance is made by Julian Priester, the only living musician from the original recording. Together, they breathe new life into Roach's timeless album, infusing it with the spirit of collective improvisation, meditation and joy as forms of resistance. By the time Chick Corea - the venerated 27-time Grammy winner and National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master - went into Mad Hatter Studios in Los Angeles to record the third album with his Elektric Band, the lineup had been solidified through constant touring the previous year. Dedicated to his father Armando, a trumpeter who led a Dixieland band in Boston in the 1930s and 1940s, Eye of the Beholder reflected a tightening of the ensemble playing and a greater showcasing of the individual solo prowess of these consummate musicians. With this fresh sounding five-star recording, it is clear that Corea was more open to showcasing this band's collective muscle and individual virtuosity. The group rips, in no uncertain terms, on showcases like "Cascade, Part II," "Trance Dance," and the staggering "Amnesia." There are experimental excursions into the kind of atmospheric, ambient music realms that Brian Eno pioneered on "Cascade, Part 1" and may be the most profound musical statement of the collection, on par with past Corea high points, "Beauty." Originally released on GRP Records in 1988, the album is a high-water mark for Corea and his Elektric Bandmates.

Beneath the Mask marks a return to the more commercially viable jazz-funk of the Chick Corea Elektric Band's earlier albums, and marks the end of the first stage in the band's history, which began five years earlier with the group's self-titled debut. Energy meets craft on this superlative outing, which finds the five virtuoso musicians (Chick Corea, drummer Dave Weckl, bassist John Patitucci, guitarist Frank Gamble, and saxophonist Eric Marienthal) engaging in a highly sophisticated yet accessible set of music. Massive in the scale of the influences it contains, the album travels from the heavy grooving funk-fusion of the title track "Beneath the Mask," to the lively West African township jive of "One of Us Over 40." to the mellow smooth jazz of "A Wave Goodbye," and the grandiose '70s style prog-rock/fusion of "Charged Particles." Originally released on GRP Records in 1991, the album reflects the innovative spirit of The Elektric Band, pushing boundaries and creating a unique sonic landscape that captivates listeners.

Forever Yours: The Farewell Performance captures highlights from two transcendent solo-piano concerts given just four months before the jazz icon Chick Corea's passing. Made at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, FL in October 2020, they would be the last public concerts Corea ever gave. Not long after these performances, his health suddenly declined, and in February 2021 the world lost one of it's greatest musicians. These recordings stand as both a deeply affecting goodbye and a definitive document of the Chick Corea solo piano experience. The listener is treated to Corea's signature cascading virtuosity, technical command, and harmonic knowledge. Featuring original music ("Armando's Rhumba," a mini-recital of Children's Songs) alongside homages to some of the composers he cherished, like Monk, Powell, and Ellington. The record reflects the generosity and empathy at the core of his music. Throughout the program, Corea's uncut spoken interludes find him introducing tunes and explaining concepts in his affable, familial way, as if chatting with old friends. Mixed and mastered by long time collaborator Birnie Kirsch and presented as a 2 disc LP set in a gatefold sleeve and includes the bonus track "Pannonica". With liner notes featuring heartfelt messages from well known admirers like Alicia Keys, Herbie Hancock, Hans Zimmer, Bobby McFerrin, Stanley Clarke, Lang Lang, and more. An essential release, it is a fine and fitting end to an astounding career.

Jazz master Chick Corea's unconventional vision of a classical performance shines through in his interaction with the Orchestra da Camera Della Sardegna, turning the acclaimed chamber orchestra into a large-scale jazz ensemble. His unorthodox approach adds a touch of playfulness to the Mozart & Gershwin pieces performed while upholding Corea's obvious reverence for their music. His joyous fusion sets the tone for the musicians and the audience, creating a truly captivating and boundary- pushing experience. The recording captures the essence of Corea's musical vision, his appreciation for classical traditions, and his undeniable genius as a performer and improviser. It stands as a testament to his lasting influence and his eternal quest to push the boundaries of music. Through his work as a composer and a performer, he sought to bridge the gap between genres, embracing the universality and enduring power of classical music. Corea realized this ambition fully during this live performance as was eager to release the recording as an album that would inspire jazz and classical music lovers equally.
