Patrick Higgins' new album TOCSIN is full of thrilling opposites. It is a masterclass of visceral genre-bending sounds that are physical and delicate at the same time. Over the course of three large compositions, the listener is brought on a journey of constant surprise, as when the sound of violins dissolves into a halo of pure noise, more at home in an underground electronics show than anything that appears on a concert stage. The performers include the Wet Ink Ensemble, hailed as the "Best Classical Ensemble of 2018"; acclaimed pianist Vicky Chow, "one of our era's most brilliant pianists,"; and the Mivos Quartet, "one of America's most daring and ferocious new-music ensembles. 1. Aletheia 2. Encomium 3. Passagio 4. Fugue (Burial) 5. Tocsin 1 6. Tocsin 2 6. Contrapunctus XIV

What is so astonishing in Scarlatti is how external elements gradually permeate his language, make it develop, affect the very structure of the discourse, and give birth to a new way of thinking and seeing. For over 20 years, Pierre Hantai has selected and recorded 100 sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, published on 6 albums between 2002 and 2019. This box set brings them together for the greatest pleasure of harpsichord lovers.

Jul 10, 2020
Limited double white vinyl LP pressing. Nocturne (Live at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival) comprises three pieces performed live on a partly prepared piano, along additional pre-recorded soundscapes. "The live performance of 'Klavierstuck II' is a pensive improvisation using essential elements of the original piece. 'Nocturne' starts with the ambient sounds whilst the piano seemingly melts into the soundscape and eventually grows into a long meditative piano solo. 'Yonder' is a much more dramatic piece, dominated by the overwhelming sounds of church bells, a sort of "dies irai", radical, emotional and fiercely poetic."
RICHARD PANTCHEFF: CHAMBER MUSIC VOL 2

This second disc of the Chamber Music of Richard Pantcheff features works which were either written in the period the composer was living in South Africa, or have connections with that period in some other way. Given that at the time the composer went to live in South Africa his reputation had been built largely upon his by then substantial number of choral and organ works, the South African period was one where, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, instrumental and chamber music came into much greater focus. This was as a result of many of South Africa's leading musicians commissioning new works from him, and there being ample opportunity at Chamber Music series and Music Festivals for these new works to be performed. Of particular note in this regard were the Rand Club Chamber Music Series, and Music at Northwards, both highly successful concert series in Johannesburg.

London Symphony Orchestra Principal Guest Conductor Gianandrea Noseda continues his survey of Shostakovich with the monumental Symphony No.4. Extravagant and challenging in equal measure, it's a work of epic proportions, requiring over a hundred musicians - including large percussion and brass sections. Owing to Soviet censure, the work went unperformed for almost thirty years after it was completed, until in 1961 it was revealed as one of the significant milestones of the composer's output - the work that solidified his reputation as a master symphonist.

Avner Dorman has fast become one of the most sought-after composers of his generation. In 2018, he received the prestigious Azrieli Prize for his Violin Concerto No.2 and his opera Wahnfried was nominated for a 2018 International Opera Award. Written in 2013 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, Letters from Gettysburg, a work scored for soprano, baritone, large chorus and percussion, is the centerpiece in this all-Dorman release. It is paired with two Dorman works commissioned by Orli and Gil Shaham. After Brahms is three intermezzos pieces for solo piano that cleverly extend the harmonic language of Brahms. Nigunim draws on the musical influences of Jewish song, hailing from locations around the world - Africa, the Caucasus, the Balkans and Central Asia.

When introduced to the audience in Liverpool by Domingo Hindoyan, Roberto Sierra's music was greeted with standing ovations. His name may be new to many, but his music is vibrant, appealing, accessible, and extremely well crafted. "The works included on this album span 25 years of creative activity. While current projects are always my focus, looking back is not something I often do; however, this recording confronted me with compositions representing a good part of my creative life. Most interesting was to notice that, although my music has changed through the years, there are traits common to all these pieces. These are elements that encompass aspects ranging from the expressive to the technical. A penchant for certain types of melodic constructions, harmonies, and orchestration choices is always present in these works. Another common element is the use of idioms that stem out of Afro-Caribbean and, more specifically, from the folk and popular music of Puerto Rico." This album is a wonderful introduction to this important contemporary composer from Latin America.

Vinyl LP pressing. In Perlman's words, Tchaikovsky "wears his heart on his sleeve" and his violin concerto is a work of "unabashed Romanticism". While bringing sensitivity and substance to his interpretation, Perlman never slips into sentimentality, and he leads an exhilarating dance in the finale. This concerto more than any other has accompanied him throughout his career. Indeed, Perlman's often claimed that he could play it virtually in his sleep. It could even be seen as emblematic of his style, given both the prodigiously virtuosic demands it makes on the performer and it's charismatic warmth.
