To celebrate their 20th anniversary in style, Les Siecles and Francois-Xavier Roth have chosen to dazzle us with the distinctive colors of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Paris. This concert, recorded in the legendary surroundings of the Theatre des Champs-Elysees, explores shimmering orchestral works by Debussy, Lalo, Dukas and Roussel.

Graze the Bell is a collection of soul-stirring, mesmerizing solo piano pieces, and the most distilled offering of David Moore's artistry to date. Known for his atmospheric compositions with Bing & Ruth, as well as his collaborations with guitarist Steve Gunn and Cowboy Sadness, this marks Moore's first widely shared solo piano album. Like the album's cover-a photograph that Moore embroidered by hand-the music abstracts personal experiences into transcendent impressions. Using his piano to meditatively inquire into the human condition, Moore's Graze the Bell is a sanctuary of sound. Across their numerous releases, Bing & Ruth frequently changed shape and sound, swelling to a fifteen-piece group and holistically arriving at a trio configuration. Their most recent album Species foregrounded Moore's Farfisa playing, while a subsequent EP of the same name featured his solo interpretations of the record. This long arc of distillation has always centered on Moore's composition for, and comprehension of, the piano. After two decades of acclaimed ensemble work, Graze the Bell's appearance is a full circle moment, a coming home-not simply to a place or time, but to a luminous center that transcends both. Some of the material on Graze the Bell was originally planned for a Bing & Ruth album, but it was ultimately reimagined as a solo undertaking. Using only the piano, Moore sought to expand upon the reliable methods he developed over the years. "I want to keep growing," he says, "and challenge dogmatic ways of thinking." Actively embracing experimentation and seeking a deeper presence in his playing, he reassessed his relationship to the piano and to life. While Moore's music is based on composed notations and draws from life experiences, the source of his inspiration remains more ineffable. Consciously nurturing the latter, he developed a natural ability to tune into a trance-like state. Moore can sit down with that intention, "and within a few seconds," he is "totally there." From the first note to the last, the album is grounded in the breathtaking tone of a "beastly" 1987 Hamburg Steinway Model D. This is partly to do with his subtle playing style, which at times touches upon silence. Moore's graceful approach gives space to the sound, revealing hues of the piano that many players would habitually ignore. Such nuances were nurtured in the process of recording the album at the renowned Oktaven Audio in Mt. Vernon, New York. The tone of the studio's Steinway was vividly captured by the production guidance of Grammy Award-winning Ben Kane with assistance from Owen Mulholland. Reinforcing Moore's experimental approach, they creatively misused pitch-correcting software to orchestrate the different registers of the piano's tonal profile.

Irida Associates U.S.A., an obscure and short-lived record label formed by composer-performer Jerry Hunt (1943-1993), offers a glimpse into the revelatory world of new music and composition in the artist's native Third Coast. Based first in Dallas and later in Hunt's home outside the rural town of Canton, Texas, Irida presented the innovative and daring experiments-into aleatoric methods, environmental acoustics, improvisation, homemade technologies, and more-pursued by Hunt and his select collaborators, primarily working in or near Texas between 1979 and 1986. Irida's brief and compact output-seven non-sequentially numbered LPs released in unknown quantities-shared work by artists whose practices often challenged the limitations of vinyl recording. Originally reissued by Blank Forms as a set of seven LPs plus an eighty-two-page booklet, these seven LPs are now available individually. "Mapping" here refers to the interest of composer Larry Austin (1930-2018) in the adaptation of external structures (such as mathematical figures or shapes observed in nature) for the purpose of generating compositional material. This concern was shared by his PhD composition students at the university of North Texas, three of whom-Rodney Washka II, Gene de Lisa, and Robert Michael Keefe- are represented on Cartography. Each experimented with the possibilities of the Synclavier digital music system at the university's Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia, where Hunt was devising his own work, "Fluud," on the synthesizer at the same moment. Throughout the '80s, Austin developed a particularly strong interest in fractal geometry and the work of French mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot, an excitement that is reflected in the naming of de Lisa's "Missa Fractalis" and Keefe's "Fractalis Balinesus." de Lisa adapted his piece from data collected by parsing Latin text, while Keefe, a jazz guitarist, structured his work around the Pythagorean monochord. Waschka's "Euwe Suite" translates a number of chess games by the Dutch player Max Euwe into five uncanny short-form compositions, where each square on the board is assigned a different pitch and is sounded at a distinct timbre depending on the piece that lands on it. His "Runes," accompanied in performance by 35-mm slides, was adapted from the ancient symbols of it's namesake. The three composers, occasionally joined by fellow student Gary Cattley, performed these and other works throughout Texas in 1986 and 1987, including during a short tour in summer 1986 billed as the "New Cartographers."

The pianist, composer, and producer Gideon Broshy who is known for building musical clouds and swarms from sharp figures, using improvisation, synthesis, and MIDI, announces his debut record, Nest, via New Amsterdam Records. Nest features TIGUE's Matt Evans (drums), the Silk Road Ensemble's Mantawoman (dulcimer), Hub New Music's Gleb Kanasevich (clarinet), and Grammy-winner William Brittelle (production).

Owls, the inverted string quartet hailed as a "dream group" by The New York Times, and whose original, visceral, and personal performances defy categorization, are releasing their debut album, Rare Birds, via New Amsterdam Records. Owls's all star lineup is comprised of world renowned soloists, as well as current and former members of yMusic, Aizuri Quartet, and Kronos Quartet: Alexi Kenney (violin), Ayane Kozasa (viola), Gabriel Cabezas (cello), and Paul Wiancko (cello). From Bach to Brahms, Mahler to Messiaen, any composer worth their salt has written for the pipe organ. And so when James McVinnie put the idea to Tristan Perich to write for the king of instruments, it was perhaps not a surprise that the New York contemporary-classical composer had already considered the possibilities of marrying his signature 1-bit electronic music with an instrument that has reverberated down the centuries. The resulting piece that started with a conversation between the two back in 2016 is undoubtedly Perich's most ambitious work to date. Infinity Gradient is an hour-long symphony in seven movements for organ and 100 speakers in 1-bit audio, recorded for this album at London's Royal Festival Hall at Southbank Centre, where McVinnie was artist-in-residence throughout 2024. The 100 speakers are set across the stage - a recurring element in Perich's work for over two decades, this time featuring four giant subwoofers, 24 medium-sized speakers, and 72 small speakers - against the backdrop of RFH's imposing organ; the piece is as visually striking to look at as it is to listen to. (In addition to being available in stereo, Infinity Gradient will also come in multichannel Dolby Atmos.)

Mauricio Kagel's Acustica (1968-70), composed for experimental sound producers and loudspeakers, stands among his most ambitious and radical works. Combining electro-acoustic tape material created at WDR with acoustic performances on roughly 200 graphic-score cards, it embodies Kagel's idea of instrumentales theater - where sound, gesture, and performer presence merge into a single dramatic and musical act. The work explores an expanded field of musicality, using invented instruments and found objects to free sound from traditional performance conventions. Avantgarde Vinyl Series features limited and numbered editions pressed on 180g vinyl with original artwork and a newly designed, beautifully crafted collector's sleeve with new liner notes by Bradford Bailey. Mastered and cut from the original analog 1/4-inch, 2-track tapes by Rainer Maillard and Sidney Claire Meyer at Emil Berliner Studios.

If you could actually hear an abstract expressionist painting, it would probably sound a lot like the work of Morton Feldman. And that's no accident: Feldman hung out in '50s and '60s New York with Jackson Pollock, Philip Guston (whose work graced the cover of Feldman's first album), and Robert Rauschenberg. Like the paintings of his visual artist peers, Feldman's work emphasized tonal color over structure, rhythm, or melody, the traditional building blocks of music. It also employed the musical equivalent of painterly "negative space" with it's use of silence and stasis; that Feldman and John Cale were enormous influences on each other will come as no surprise. So, it makes sense that Feldman would dedicate probably his two most celebrated compositions to two giants of the New York scene: abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, whose famous Chapel adorns this LP's front cover, and writer and critic Frank O'Hara, whose own work drew inspiration from the same sources as Feldman's. Rothko Chapel and For Frank O'Hara first were released in 1976 on a seminal album from the Odyssey imprint on Columbia Records; for it's 50th anniversary and first LP reissue, we've had it pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records for the quietest listen achievable, using new transfers from the original master tapes. Profound, career-defining work that opened the door for latter-day ambient composers like Brian Eno to walk through.

Christopher Tignor is a composer, violinist, lecturer, and software engineer. His emotionally charged scores and unique focus on live, performance-based electroacoustic practice has won acclaim within both the classical and experimental communities across 10 LPs on the Western Vinyl and New Albion record labels. He creates the live performance software he uses, shared freely. As a composer he has written and recorded work for ensembles including The Knights, A Far Cry string orchestra, and Brooklyn Rider string quartet, performing alongside them at premiere venues including Carnegie's Zankel Hall. As a collaborator he has worked with Rachel Grimes, Helios, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, John Congleton, This Will Destroy You and several other artists at the boundaries of popular music. Tignor holds a Ph.D in music composition from Princeton University, an M.S. in computer science from NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and a B.A. in creative writing from Bard College where he studied fiction and poetry with John Ashbery.
