Born in 1892, Arthur Honegger was part of the “war generation,” having lived through both world wars as well as the economic collapse which fell between them. This left its mark on the composer, and may well have made a contribution to his increasingly dark, pessimistic compositions. This release features two of his symphonies, Nos. 3 and 5, as well as his rarely recorded work “Ruby.” A fan and regular attendee of rugby matches during the 1920s, Honegger was passionate about the “wild, abrupt, disordered, despairing rhythms” of the matches, which can be heard in this release. Mario Venzago is the Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Bern Symphony Orchestra and Artist in Association at the Tapiola Sinfonietta in Finland. “Arthur Honegger does not write a single dynamic marking in his score. In other words, it’s to be played loudly all the way through!...I find the chants in the stands especially fascinating, as these really determine the whole turbulence and climax of the game.” (Mario Venzago)
