Orchid Classics presents an album of encores for cello and piano performed by the outstanding South Korean cellist Hee-Young Lim and pianist Chuhui Liang. Hee-Young Lim made her debut album of French cello concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2018, for which she received widespread acclaim: Gramophone magazine praised her ‘exceptionally refined, silkily lyrical sound’ and BBC Music Magazine wrote that ‘Lim outshines her contemporaries in the warmth of expressiveness of her tone, which is of truly rare beauty’.

This release with Orchid sees Hee-Young Lim draw together a selection of encores: small but sparkling gems of the repertoire, some composed for the cello and others arranged for this versatile instrument. The programme includes romantic works by Amy Beach, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Rubinstein and Brahms, and French Impressionism from Debussy and Ravel; it opens with The Swan by Saint-Saëns and ends with Schubert’s exquisite Ave Maria.
