Václav Pichl was one of the few composers besides the renowned contemporaries Mozart and Haydn who could attract lasting interest in Vienna. A lively musical exchange united him with the two main protagonists of Viennese Classicism at the end of the seventeenth century, and they accepted Pichl as one of them. The composer, born in Bohemia, spent most of his life in the Austrian musical metropolis, writing primarily chamber music for strings. His string trios, numbering 45 altogether, can be regarded as a substantial contribution to the Classical Period. The six Trios, Op. 7 form a cycle in which all three participants have essential things to say besides tutti and duo passages, the viola and cello as well as the violin have the honour of delivering solos, thereby demonstrating great expressive variety. The Ensemble Agora knows very well how to transfer these variegated timbres onto historical instruments in a stylistically secure and masterly way.
