According to current knowledge, the St. Aegidius organ in Berne has the world's only surviving pipes by the Brabant organ builder Reinhard Lampeler van Mill (1596); it also possesses a significant amount of historical substance from Harmen Kr�ger (1643) and Christian Vater (1714). This organ is an important historical document of North German organ building prior to Arp Schnitger-an instrument full of power, intensity, tone color, and "sweet sharpness." The aim of this recording is not to invent a new instrument for Buxtehude's organ works, but rather to show how the sound of the late 16th and early 17th century Berne organ influences our hearing of Buxtehude's music-his instrument in L�beck also had registers that dated back to this period. The use of pure meantone temperament, registrations based on 16th and 17th century sources, as well as ornamentation and diminutions, also play an essential role here. The meantone temperament also necessitated the transposition of some pieces, a practice also practice also to be found in works by Johann Sebastian Bach.

The key to Buxtehude's trio sonatas, both for performers and for listeners, is an awareness of the stylus fantasticus which German composers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries developed in response to the new freely inventive style of Italian composers such as Claudio Merulo and Girolamo Frescobaldi. 'It is the most free and unrestrained method of composing,' wrote one contemporary theorist. 'It is bound to nothing, neither to any words nor to a melodic subject, instituted to display genius and to teach the hidden design of harmony and the ingenious composition of harmonic phrases and fugues.' The seven sonatas in each of these collections, published in Hamburg in 1696, offer a continuous succession of short movements, up to eight per sonata, which alternate between slow and fast tempi, and improvisatory and contrapuntal textures, dominated by a dazzling array of ostinato variations which embed the melodies in the listener's consciousness. We encounter witty solos, dialogues and conversations, sublime suspensions, jaunty syncopations and occasional excursions into strange and modal harmony. The expressive range is accordingly wide, venturing in Op.1 No.6 into a D minor realm of darkness and desperation. The musicians on this new recording of Buxtehude's trio sonatas are experienced and skilful practitioners of Baroque style, with an impressive catalogue of albums on Brilliant Classics to their credit. Valerio Losito has recorded the violin sonatas of Scarlatti, Telemann and Tessarini, among others, while Simone Stella has made complete surveys of the organ and harpsichord output by Froberger and Pachelbel - 'performed with natural flair, especially with respect to clarifying counterpoint' (Gramophone). The logical continuation of the series Organ Works of the North German Baroque, recorded by Friedhelm Flamme, is the works of Dietrich Buxtehude, the most important master of North German organ music. Each SACD has been conceived as an exciting concert program that shows the diversity of Buxtehude's compositions and some of the infinite timbral possibilities of the Treutmann organ. This edition contains all surviving works of the most important Baroque master of organ art before and alongside Johann Sebastian Bach.

New recordings which have the field almost to themselves in an overlooked corner of Buxtehude's output. 'One of the world's most prolific harpsichordists' (Gramophone), Pieter-Jan Belder now leads this comprehensive and often revelatory survey of the surviving chamber music by Dieterich Buxtehude. Comprising eight musicians active on the Dutch early-music scene, Ensemble Fantasticus presents the only complete set of this music on record, making it an essential acquisition for all Baroque-music enthusiasts, further enhanced by detailed notes on both composer and works by Jon Baxendale. Buxtehude became the Cantor of the Marienkirche in Lubeck in 1668, at the age of 31. This would be his last church post. Bach undertook his famous journey by foot to Lubeck in 1705 - 37 years later - indicating the longevity of Buxtehude's career. His duties required him to focus on writing music for the church, and only latterly did he turn to chamber music (much in the way that Bach did during his last decade). The seven sonatas of Op.1 were published in 1694, and Op.2 appeared two years later; these collections represent the only known examples of his music printed during his lifetime. Buxtehude seems to have regarded the two collections as a unity, which emerges from study of their instrumentation and key structure. Seven might also be significant since it represents the number of notes in the diatonic scale and is also a number steeped in mysticism and symbolism. It also symbolises the humours of the seven planets, which Buxtehude is reputed to have described musically when encountering the astronomical clock at the Marienkirche. Considered together, the 14 sonatas (all scored for one or two solo instruments plus continuo, with strings in mind) open up an unparalleled universe of rhetorical expression that never fails to surprise or move the listener. The collection also includes unpublished pieces which round out our grasp of Buxtehude as an instrumental composer: a further 10 sonatas, not easy to date within the composer's career, but full of striking ideas such as the ground-bass passacaglia underpinning an A minor Trio Sonata. - Dietrich Buxtehude (c.1637-1707) was a Danish-German composer and organist. This is the final release of our complete recordings of BUXTEHUDE's work. Here the German-Danish musician shows his compositional skills in an area that is justly called the ultimate discipline of Baroque keyboard players - the connection between prelude and fugue, which culminated in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach at the end of the Baroque era. It is well known that he made a pilgrimage to Lubeck in his younger years to attentively listen to the organist of St. Mary's Church there.

With this exemplary set, Brilliant Classics has formed a vivid picture of the composer Dietrich Buxtehude across the most important sectors of his output, drawing on a rich back catalogue crowned with new recordings. More than half of the set is devoted to the ambitious, monumental recording cycle of the complete keyboard music on 10 CDs undertaken by organist-harpsichordist and label stalwart Simone Stella in 2010-11. Koopman indeed commented in a 1991 article for the Musical Times that, in order to perform Buxtehude, one had to "take the risk to be dissident"...

Buxtehude's legacy, for many centuries neglected, has more recently been re-appraised and its importance accepted, not only for the quality of its craftsmanship but also for its undeniable influence on composers such as J.S. Bach. In fact, it is reputed that Bach walked over 200 miles to hear Buxtehude perform on the organ, so extraordinary was his reputation. Chaconne has previously recorded sacred cantatas of Buxtehude, but this is the label's first recording of secular instrumental works of the composer. The VII Suonate, Op. 1 have now been recorded by The Purcell Quartet, who consistently receives good reviews, and is renowned for its artistry in repertoire of this kind. The trio sonatas are a remarkable example of Buxtehude's beautiful chamber music and together with the trio sonatas Op. 2 are the only compositions that Buxtehude issued in print.

Dietrich Buxtehude began his activity at St. Mary's Church exactly 350 years ago, and the City of Lubeck fittingly commemorated this anniversary by awarding this year's renowned Buxtehude Prize to Harald Vogel. Matched by no other musician, Vogel ahs distinguished himself both in historical organ playing in general and with Buxtehude's oeuvre in particular. To celebrate this occasion, MDG is now releasing a highly interesting new edition containing all of Buxtehude's works from the Codex E. B. of 1688 and including- as a surprising rarity- the recording premiere of a sonata with obbligato gamba. The specialist Thomas Fritzsch proves to be a virtuosic and tonally sensitive duo partner for Vogel. Moreover, this album offers valuable documentation of significant instrumental resources. More than a hundred original stops from Buxtehude's times are employed, and the organs from Torrlosa, Helsingor, and Lubeck's Church of St. James- places where the composer himself was active- are now being heard together for the first time ever on album. This circumstance harmonizes very well with the Codex works, which were performed as liturgical music during religious services, "sub communion," during the Lord's Supper.

Ricercar first released this collection of cantatas by Buxtehude in 2007 to mark the 300th anniversary of the composer’s death; it provides a comprehensive summary of the different musical styles that Buxtehude employed. Set to both Latin and German texts, these "geistliche Konzerte" are remarkable not only for their emotional and theatrical writing for the voice but also for the close linking of the instrumental parts with the vocal lines. Ricercar, to seek, has been the underlying motto of the Ricercar Consort ever since its foundation. It was in 1985, with J. S. Bach’s Musical Offering, that the ensemble made its first concert tour, having already acquired a solid international reputation with its recordings, notably in German Baroque cantatas and instrumental music. William Greene, organist-choirmaster at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree and Performers Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. An organ student of Russell Saunders, Wolfgang Rubsam, and H. Max Smith, he also studied harpsichord with Gustav Leonhardt at the Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam under an ITT International Fellowship.
