“For me, it is important when I compose songs, not first and foremost to make music, but above all to give expression to the poet’s innermost intentions. To let the poem reveal itself and to intensify it, that was my task. If this task is tackled, then the music is also successful. Not otherwise, no matter how celestially beautiful it may be.” At the time Edvard Grieg wrote these words in a letter to his biographer Henry Finck in 1903, he was at the height of his success and enjoyed the reputation as the greatest living composer in his native country of Norway. His popularity remains undiminished. Lyric soprano Siri Karoline Thornhill studied in her hometown of Stavanger, Norway and did her masters degree at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. She gathered further important impulses in master-classes with Anna Reynolds and Elly Ameling, and has worked with well-known conductors such as Ivan Fischer, Ton Kooopman, Daniel Reuss, and more. Her extensive discography includes recordings of Bach cantatas with La Petite Bande and Sigiswald Kuijken as well as all solo cantatas for soprano with Kolner Kammerorchester and Helmut Muller-Bruhl.

Franziska Pietsch and Detlev Eisinger make their audite debut with the three sonatas for violin and piano by the great 19th c. Romanticist Edvard Grieg, who himself rated these three sonatas as amongst his best works. Violinist Franziska Pietsch gave her debut at the Komische Oper Berlin aged eleven, after which she regularly performed as a soloist in the GDR until leaving East Germany in 1986, enabling her to pursue a career in the West. Pianist Detlev Eisinger gave his first piano recital at age thirteen, his busy international career now almost three decades long.

Audite's overview of Edvard Grieg's orchestral works comes to it's fifth and final volume with his songs for Orchestra rooted in the lore of his Norway and graced with the presence of acclaimed soprano Camilla Tilling and with his dedication to the Norwegian patriot Henrik Wergeland that closes the collection, the baritone Tom Erik Lie. With the WDR Sinfonieorchester K�ln conducted by Eivind Aadland.

The WDR Sinfonie Orchester and the Norwegian conductor Eivind Aadland continue their survey of Edvard Grieg's orchestral works with this selection from the composer's orchestral repertoire which he liked to conduct across Europe.

Edvard Grieg' idiom is firmly rooted in Norwegian folk music, especially in his numerous short pieces. The Sl tter are Norwegian folk dances and tunes, originally played on the peasant violin, and notated by Johan Halvorsen.

Edvard Grieg and his librettist Bjurnstjerne Bjurnson were both fascinated by a great period in Norway's past: The Viking Age, whose sagas, and fierce conflicts between Christianity and the old Norse religion, inspired all three of Grieg's works recorded here. Landkjenning depicts the moment when Olav Trygvason (960s-1000) and his men sight the Norwegian coast for the first time on their voyage from England to Norway. As King from 995 to 1000, Olav worked single-mindedly to Christianize Norway. Conceived as a true Norwegian national opera, but left unfinished, the three scenes from Olav Trygvason explore pagan rituals and tributes to the Norse gods in anticipation of King Olav's entrance into the pagan temple. Includes the world premiere recording of Edmund Neupert's Resignation orchestrated by Grieg.

The tour of Norway takes US to the countryside, with it's mountains, lakes, fjords, rivers, and waterfall. We see Edvard Grieg's house at Troldhaugen, and then Bergen, Grieg's birthplace, with it's colorful traditional houses. Included is music by Grieg.
