Ennio Morricone - "Morricone 60" Deluxe Edition - Morricone 60 is the first album of Ennio Morricone's greatest hits conducted, recorded and curated by the composer himself and marks the 60th anniversary of his career. The album features the Maestro performing his greatest film music with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly to his Academy Award-winning score for Tarantino's The Hateful Eight. An audiophile-grade LP transfer for evocative transcriptions of hits from the Ennio Morricone catalogue of classic film scores. For his own selection of highlights from Ennio Morricone's music, Enea Leone has arranged the themes from the Leone/Eastwood 'dollar' trilogy (inevitably finishing with The Good, The Bad and the Ugly) alongside no less definitive westerns as Once Upon a Time in the West and Once Upon a Time in America. He has also ventured into the film composer's later career, with the unforgettable theme from The Mission, starring Jeremy Irons, and a four-movement suite from La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano, a 1998 romance directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, in which a baby boy discovered on an ocean liner in 1900 grows into a musical prodigy, never setting foot on land. With it's subtle pastiche of Mozart and long-limbed Romantic melodies, this score lends itself to Leone's sensitive transcription for guitar. Enea Leone has enjoyed a 20-year career as a performer and teacher and made several well-received recordings for Brilliant Classics such as the complete studies by Fernando Sor (94791), which attracted a glowing review from Classics Today: 'These pieces are both technically beneficial and musically rewarding, and Milan-born guitarist Enea Leone's suave execution, keen ear for tone colour, and steady yet flexible rhythmic sense befit the music.' The idea for this album came about during the recording of its predecessor Cinema Suites (BBC Music Magazine’s “Screen Choice”, Album of the Week on WDR3 etc.), when the Morricone family sent Marco Serino a number of rarities that they hoped could also be recorded, particularly “Dedicated to Maria” (from the film The Sleeping Wife) that the composer had dedicated to his wife. These works, along with others that Serino rediscovered in his own archives, make up the backbone of Cinema Rarities, an ideal sequel to the previous recording.

After twenty years as Ennio Morricone’s chosen violinist, Serino continues his exploration of the compositions for violin and orchestra, but this time with a particular focus on pieces that, besides being less well known to the wider public, all share a degree of “Italianness”.

The main nucleus of the program consists of three suites named after three Italian film directors (Silvano Agosti, Mauro Bolognini and the Taviani brothers), with whom Morricone worked closely. Although the respective films did not achieve the international acclaim of those directed by Sergio Leone or Giuseppe Tornatore, which featured in the previous recording, they inspired the composer to come up with new and distinctive solutions, such as “Love Remembered” from The Inheritance, considered by Marco Serino to be one of the most beautiful.

Equally quintessentially Italian are the two extracts from the scores for The Lady Caliph directed by Alberto Bevilacqua, including the lovely “Nocturne” and the brief “Quasi un Vivaldi” (from Sergio Sollima’s film Revolver), which herald by almost a decade remakes like Gian Piero Reverberi’s Rondò Veneziano. A unique place is occupied by Four Adagios, a collection of four pieces chosen by the composer himself (including the iconic “Whoever” and “Deborah’s Theme”), which in this arrangement for violin cites the main theme of the first movement of the Beethoven Concerto. Dedicated to Serino and performed worldwide under the baton of Morricone, Four Adagios speaks to the artistic partnership between composer and violinist, their mutual professional respect and deep friendship.

Sony Classical presents “Ennio Morricone conducts Morricone – His Greatest Hits”, celebrating Morricone’s 60 years of music making in October. The album features his most popular movie themes, selected and conducted by Morricone himself. It contains music from films including "Once Upon a Time in the West", "Cinema Paradiso", "The Good The Bad And The Ugly", "The Mission". In 2016 and 2017 Morricone will present parts of this repertoire internationally on his "The 60 Years of Music Tour".

For twenty years Marco Serino was Ennio Morricone’s go-to violinist, the soloist on his film soundtracks and on world tours where they were reworked for the concert hall. In January 2020, after what proved to be his last public concert, at the Italian Senate in Rome, Morricone finished the transcription of this magnificent and unpublished collection, which recasts the themes of his most famous scores in suites transcribed for violin and orchestra. The work was carried out in close collaboration with Marco Serino and dedicated to him as a fruit of the artistic partnership between the two men. The collection alternates between pieces already performed in concert and others that are heard in this version for the first time. A year and a half after the composer’s death, this extraordinary document, a testimony to friendship and professional esteem, now becomes a recording project with the collaboration of Andrea Morricone, the composer’s son, who conducts the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento.
