For me, the real "Best of Satie" would include at least excerpts from the opera Socrate and the ballet Parade. But this is a nice overview of the eccentric composer's keyboard gems, culled from Klára Körmendi's excellent Satie cycle for Naxos. Many pianists take Satie's wistful melodic sensibility as license to let the music wallow and droop. Körmendi will have none of that. Her sensitive, expertly colored playing brings uncommon, refreshing urgency to the first three Nocturnes, the well-worn Gymnopédies, and all six Gnossiennes. Moreover, she has a way of making the composer's idiosyncratic expressive indications audible without hitting listeners over the head. The disc concludes with the Gymnopédies in their familiar orchestrations by Debussy (Nos. 1 & 3) and Roland-Manuel (No. 2). The French orchestra plays rather patchily in the first but redeems itself with some very nice playing in the other two. So wrote Erik Satie in 1903 during a period of transition that saw him produce the last of his Rose + Croix style music in Verset laique & somptueux, but in making a living writing for the music halls, he also created hugely popular songs such as Je te veux. The works on this fourth volume of Satie's complete solo piano music were written between 1897 and 1906. They include rare theater music and tender waltzes that contrast with jaunty ragtime and pantomime dances. Nicolas Horvath began his music studies at the Academie de Musique et de Theatre Prince Rainier III, and at the age of 16 he caught the attention of the American conductor Lawrence Foster. His other mentors include a number of distinguished international pianists, including Liszt specialist Leslie Howard. He is the holder of a number of awards, including First Prize of the Scriabin and the Luigi Nono International Competitions. He has become noted for hosting concerts of unusual length, sometimes lasting over twelve hours, such as the performance of the complete piano music of Erik Satie at the Paris Philharmonie before an audience of 14,000 people and recently played together with Philip Glass also at the Paris Philharmonie.

Erik Satie is a bit of a cult figure. His distinctive and grotesque but also poetic and beautiful music is performed by many- especially his beloved little “gymnopedies.” The early 1900s in Paris was an exciting time filled with contradictions and paradoxes, and Satie and his music are a distinct and uncompromising expression. This new release is a truly fascinating take on the French composer Eric Satie. The Danish trio has long experienced great success with their intimate concerts featuring songs and solo music by Satie, and the result is here captured in brilliant sound. Trio Satie is celebrating their tenth anniversary with the release of this album. The group works to arrange music for soprano, double bass and piano- a somewhat unusual trio combination- and cares about presenting and explaining the music in a cultural and historical context of contemporary poetry and visual arts. It gives their concerts shape as a kind of “café concert” and the ambition is to make difficult music easy, accessible, and fun.

Countless umbrellas, pils of jumble and two grand pianos stacked one upon another found in Erik Satie's apartment after his death were the inspiration of this new release. Pianist Tamar Halperin and producer Guy Sternberg strip down Satie's compositions into individual voices, play them on various instruments and stack the pieces on top of each other. Their goal is to find out what Satie's music would sound like, were it composed in modern times. Halperin and Sternberg want to reflect Satie's influence on the various generations of artists that followed him. Satie was a composer who blurred the lines between Classical Art music and non-classical, popular styles.

On the occasion of Erik Satie's 150th birthday, Fumio Yasuda embarks on a quest for hidden works of music and adapts rarely performed compositions for his piano trio: pieces that are well worth their discovery! Following a tour through Spain and France, Yasuda recorded this album in Bordeaux in October, 2016. In the early 20th century, Erik Satie was part of the Dadaist circle of artists in Paris. He worked with René Clair, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Léonide Massine, Man Ray and, most importantly, Jean Cocteau. Fumio Yasuda selected Satie's music for René Clair's filme masterpieces "Entr'acte" as well as the works "Dance de travers" and "Airs à faire fuir" from "“Pièces froides" and several additional compositions to arrange and interpret them in a completely new style. Satie has an entirely different view from many of his colleagues: He is convinced that a composer has no right to waste the time his audience dedicates to him. And so he develops his idea of background music - and calls it "Musique d'ameublement" (which translates approximately as "Music as furniture", or "Musical furniture"). Music is meant to be in a room just like a table or a chair. Satie rejects finesse and virtuosity. "Everyone will tell you that I'm not a musician. And they're right." Satie has a very special place in the history of music. Without seeming obtrusive, Fumio Yasuda bows to Erik Satie and shows his respect fo rthe great master, who so often is little appreciated since his compositional style is misunderstood or his oeuvre reduced to a few popular pieces. For many listeners, some pieces will be a new discovery, thanks to Fumio Yasuda's selection.
