Deeply felt new recordings of these landmarks in Romantic piano literature on a modern Steinway grand, by an Italian artist with an active interest in the lineage of piano history. On recordings for Piano Classics ranging from Beethoven to Alkan and beyond, the Italian pianist Vincenzo Maltempo has demonstrated a deeply informed understanding of Romantic piano literature, both in the nuts and bolts of it's composition and in the field of it's reception. Maltempo, who was born in 1985, begins with smouldering technique, no surprise for someone who has made a name for himself as a fearless interpreter of the briar-patch scores of Alkan. ' In his own booklet introduction to his latest recording, Maltempo explores the nature of a Chopin tradition, as handed down to us from accounts of the composer's own playing, his instructions to his students, and then the early recordings made by renowned interpreters such as Cortot and Pugno. 'What their recordings share is a relatively free or liberal interpretation of elements in the score that are now treated more rigidly. Their application of rubato is more subtle, their pedal technique does not cloud the sound but clarifies melodies and harmonies. During 2021's lockdown, pianist Maurice Lammerts van Bueren and Jakko van der Heijden from Zefir Records joined forces in a special project: for more than a year, they posted one mazurka by Fr�d�ric Chopin on their YouTube channel 'The Mazurki Project' every week. Now that the project has come to an end, all 57 mazurkas are released in a double album. Maurice Lammerts van Bueren about his passion for this particular genre: "Since my childhood, I heard Chopin's mazurkas: live, when my mother played them on our piano in the living room, and through the speakers, when Artur Rubinstein's 1967 recording enchanted my eardrums. It made me fall in love not only with Rubinstein's playing, but also with Chopin's music and the sound of a Steinway grand piano. At the age of eleven, I won my first competition with a mazurka and now, almost forty years later, the mazurkas keep fascinating me. Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter was a Soviet pianist of German extraction (German father). He was widely recognized as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century and is sometimes proposed as the greatest of all. He was well known for his vast repertoire, effortless technique and poetic phrasing. Despite his huge discography, Sviatoslav Richter hated the process of recording. Glenn Gould called him one of the most powerful musical communicators of our time, and it was in concert that Richter's musical genius found it's full expression.

Navona Records presents VIRTUOSO, a collection of works by Frederic Chopin performed by piano prodigy Dmitry Ishkhanov.
