Famous Flute Concertos / Jean-Pierre Rampal

A household word when speaking of repertoire, legendary flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal devoted just as much effort to establishing the masterpieces in their rightful place as to unearthing countless works from the baroque, classical and romantic eras. As far as concertos are concerned, cornerstones by Bach, Mozart and Vivaldi thus gained worldwide fame, and it went the same way for Ibert, Jolivet and Nielsen. Unfailing lyric sense, purity of style, magnificent tone, grace of phrasing, fabulous virtuosity, tremendous commitment... Critics, colleagues and the public were all running out of superlatives. Immediately valued as references, his recordings still fascinate and often leave the listener exhilarated. This 12 CD set tries the challenge of surrounding these marvels with some of the most dazzling rediscoveries, offering famous and less famous music, but equally glorious interpretations.

Ashley Solomon and Florilegium are joined by violinist Rachel Podger, soprano Elizabeth Watts, and recorder player Hannah Parry on Telemann: Ino Cantata and Double Concertos. Based on a story from Ovid's Metamorphoses, Telemann's Ino is a dramatic and theatrical cantata with a single soprano voice carrying the entire narrative. The two double concertos on this recording showcase Telemann's mastery of instrumental color and texture. His innovative and non-traditional approach to the standard concerto form can be seen in the five-movement structure of the concerto for flute and violin. The concerto for recorder and flute is one of his most popular instrumental works and is a wonderful example of his love for unusual instrumental combinations.

On 13 April 1716, the long-awaited heir to the Habsburg throne was born. All of Europe rejoiced, for it was expected that the Spanish War of Succession so recently ended would not rekindle into another disastrous conflict. The city of Frankfurt am Main, where emperors were elected and crowned, marked the event on 17 May with a huge celebration, and Georg Philipp Telemann contributed two large-scale works for it. The performances in the Barfsserkirche and on the Rmerberg were part of a day-long series of festive activities with hours of carillons ringing and hundreds of cannon salutes-but it was music director Telemann who emerged victorious in the end. Understandably so, as the first recording of the two festive pieces reveals. These two gems further enrich our label's Telemann catalogue.

The quartets featured on this CD belong to the first collection of quartets that Telemann wrote in Hamburg in 1730, in anticipation of a trip to Paris (which he would only make in the autumn of 1737, staying in the French capital for eight months), invited by four important French musicians: the flautist Michel Blavet, the violinist Jean-Pierre Guignon, the gambist Jean-Baptiste Forqueray and a cellist and harpsichordist named Prince douard. The collection was published in 1730 and contributed significantly to the spread of the composer's fame throughout Europe, particularly in France (so much so that it was reprinted by the Parisian publisher Le Clerc in 1736); it includes six quartets, and was published under the Italian title Quadri a violino, flauto traversiere, viola di gamba o violoncello, e fondamento: ripartiti in 2. concerti, 2. balletti, 2. sonate. The six Quadri constitute a runion des gots, as they incorporate diverse national styles. Although traces of the "German style" can be detected in each of them, the French style clearly prevails in the suites, while the Italian style dominates the sonatas.

Ino was the wife of Athamas and thus the daughter-in-law of Aeolus, the god of the winds. For reasons that are not entirely clear, she incurred the resentment of Hera, the wife of the gods, who confused Athamas to such an extent that he shot one of his own sons and also wanted to kill the second - whereupon Ino threw herself into the sea with her offspring. In the end, mother and daughter are transformed into maritime deities. When Georg Philipp Telemann set this material to music, he was already well past eighty; musically, however, he exploded like a young man with a bright future ahead of him. The Ino of our new recording comes from the ranks of the Boston Early Music Festival: Amanda Forsythe, most recently celebrated as the irresistible "Serva Padrona", opens an aria recital with this demanding role, which portrays the opera composer Telemann from monodrama to lively comedy and looks ahead to upcoming productions.

Everything has an end sometime. Similarly, this chapter from the great book of Georg Philipp Telemann, which holds a significant place in our label's repertoire, is also noteworthy. After two decades, we have now recorded all the violin concertos that this artesian spring of music committed to paper with overflowing imagination throughout his lifetime. This presents more than three dozen entertaining works, some in expanded suite (overture) form, others in the standard three-movement structure-but always rich in subtle surprises and demanding solos involving up to four violins. This ninth and final volume is once again devoted to concertante duos and contains, as it were, as a bonus, "the" Viola Concerto in G major, which until our series appeared was widely regarded as Telemann's most "popular" contribution to the genre. Now, however, entirely new perspectives open up

With this release, cpo, the Gutenberg Soloists, and the Neumeyer Consort under Felix Koch have now completed an impressive five of the planned seven parts of their shared journey-on the way to what promises to be the first and, for a long time to come, likely the only and uniquely comprehensive recording of the cantatas that the extraordinarily industrious Georg Philipp Telemann composed in 1713/14 for the services at Frankfurt's Barfuerkirche. This latest volume is devoted to the feasts of Ascension and Pentecost and also includes additional works designated for the Sundays after Trinity-each of them a smaller or greater marvel, rich in imagery that appeals to all the senses and pays full tribute to the instructive texts of the poetic pastor Erdmann Neumeister.

The unearthing of Telemann's Fantaisies pour la Basse de Viole in 2015 has been the most important discovery for the repertoire of viola da gamba in recent times. The compositions are a compendium of how Italian and French influences permeated the purely German language to create a specific style. Using the genre Fantasia, Telemann shows us a portrait full of audacity, freshness and compositional freedom hitherto unknown. Sara Ruiz plays on an anonymous viola da gamba dated around 1700. Shechoosesto emphasize the rotundness and the beauty of the tone, while her technical skills allow her to create a real drama. She does not hesitate to make use of a nice legato where a pleasant melody is encountered: she makes her instrument sing almost like a cello, i.e. a voice. With her, each Fantasia tells a story, every time a particular and thrilling one.

Telemann's practicality enabled him to recognize at a very early stage the cantors' desire for cantatas that are easy to perform. For this reason the collection entitled "Der Harmonische Gottesdienst" quickly became popular and no doubt earned him a handsome profit. The publication of this collection made him one of the most popular cantata composers of his time. In 1728 Mattheson referred to "Der Harmonische Gottesdienst" in his "Musicalischen Patrioten" as a standard work of valuable domestic music.

Georg Philipp Telemann is undoubtedly one of the composers who wrote the most parts for the recorder. No wonder, as he had mastered the instrument since his childhood and provided it with rewarding parts not only in chamber music, but also in orchestral and vocal works. The young Portuguese recorder player Joao Francisco Tavora studied in Porto and Leipzig and presents works for recorder by Telemann in various scorings, which show off his extraordinary playing technique and interpretative skills to their best advantage.

One of the duties of the office of municipal music director in Hamburg was to perform a Passion every year during Lent, alternating from year to year according to the evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Telemann took on this task with particular fervour and created a total of 46 passions throughout his time in Hamburg, from spring 1722 until his death in 1767, half of which are unfortunately lost today.

With their new album, the Berlin Baroque Soloists take us again (also available Cremona I HC22084) to Cremona, one of the important Italian centers of violin making and technical developments in the 16th/17th centuries. Composers were only too happy to make use of the many innovations, as they opened up unimagined possibilities for them to add additional colors and accents to their musical art. This wonderful recording gives a lasting impression of how different these can be. Reinhard Goebel and his Berlin Baroque Soloists find exactly the right tone for each of the recorded concerti. Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) was-to characterize him in contemporary terms-a workaholic, thanks to which we have, amongst his 3,000-plus works, his two sets of marvellously rich Paris Quartets. SOMM Recordings is pleased to release TELEMANN Paris Quartets Volume 1: 6 Quadri, featuring leading period-instrument specialists from The London Handel Players, praised by the New York Times for their "soulful depth" and their "consummate skill and musicianship." At the height of his phenomenal productivity, Telemann held the positions of Kantor at the Johanneum Lateinschule in Hamburg; Kapellmeister to the five largest churches in the city; and Director of the Hamburg Opera. He also had obligations to the courts in Eisenach and Bayreuth. As if that wasn't enough, he embarked on an ambitious project of self-publication of his works. Amongst these were Quartets for violin, flute, viola da gamba or cello, and continuo; divided into 2. Concertos, 2. Ballets, 2. Sonatas. The first set of quartets, or quadri, was published in Hamburg- certainly by 1730 though the exact date is unknown - and such was their popularity that they were republished in Paris by Le Clerc in 1736 without Telemann's permission. It would seem that this prompted him to make a long-awaited visit to the French capital where he stayed for eight months in 1737-38. While there, he composed a second glorious set of quartets, naming his two collections Quadri and Nouveaux Quatuors. In the latter part of the 20th century, the editors of the Telemann Musikalische Werke titled the two sets collectively as The Paris Quartets, by which name we still know them. As their extended title indicates, the Quadri are not six works of the same genre. Instead, they comprise two Italianate concertos, two German-style sonatas, and two Balletti or suites of French dances, bringing together a variety of national styles. The ensemble of London Handel Players is flexible in size, consisting primarily of strings, flute/recorder, and harpsichord. The featured musicians on SOMM's first volume of the Paris Quartets by Telemann are Rachel Brown, flute; Adrian Butterfield, violin; Gavin Kibble, viola da gamba; Sarah McMahon, cello; and Silas Wollston, harpsichord. The London Handel Players' critically acclaimed discography for SOMM includes five discs of Handel chamber music: his Trio sonatas Opp. 2 (SOMMCD 084) and 5 (SOMMCD 044); his Complete Sonatas and Works for Violin & Continuo (SOMMCD 068); and two volumes titled Handel at Home (SOMMCD 055)and Total Eclipse, Handel at Home Vol. 2 (SOMMCD 0676). David Vickers, reviewing Handel at Home for Gramophone, wrote, "Their consummate musicianship is consistently delightful: sparkling violin-playing (often with two players in perfect unison) and superb continuo contributions are just as impressive as Rachel Brown's poetic flute solos."

Alex Potter - praised by the press as "a rising star in the world of countertenors" - interprets sacred works by Telemann for cpo on this album. The setting of Psalm 6 continues to be thoroughly obliged to the tone of the sacred concertos of the seventeenth century associated with names such as Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Rosenmller, and Johann Schelle. However, even though this psalm setting entitled "Ach, Herr strafe mich nicht" very much resembles similar works by older authors, it nevertheless displays a very special aura. Accompanied by two violins and basso continuo, an affectively nuanced narrative of a soul plagued by fear and hoping for the end of it's torments is heard. The Missa in B minor is similar in style to the music of the psalm; it is what is known as a Lutheran short mass, which with it's Kyrie and Gloria merely consists of two compositional complexes. All the numbers comprising "Me miserum" concern the faithful soul, which tells it's story, is aware of it's insufficiency but does not yield to despair, and therefore is able to register it's experience of faith. A sonata and two fugues round off the album.

One of Telemann's later works, this Passion oratorio was composed to a text by Karl Wilhelm Ramler. How it came to be set by both Carl Heinrich Graun in Berlin and Telemann in Hamburg, the results performed within weeks of each other, is a topic of great speculation that's pointedly covered in the historically oriented program notes. Telemann's work is scored for four soloists, chorus, and a small orchestra. Ramler assumed that everyone knew the story of the Crucifixion; the solos, accompagnatos, and chorales all comment on the story rather than giving a blow by blow account. As sectioned in this interpretation, Part I is devoted to events that took place in the Garden of Gethsemane and Part II to the horrors of Mount Golgotha. The overall tone is reverent and hopeful rather than morbid and grim, and the work is full of lovely arias, choruses, and chorales.
Telemann's use of obbligato wind instruments is thoroughly masterful, from the dulcet flutes in the alto aria "Ein Gebet um neue Stärke", to the transverse piccolos that delightfully chirp away in the soprano chorale "Singt dem göttlichen Propheten" near the beginning of Part II. A soulful horn solo is the focus of the Introduction (Lamento), while the same instrument is used in military fashion in the tenor aria "So stehet ein Berg Gottes". An expressive oboe d'amore accentuates the bass aria "Ihr weichgeschaffnen Seelen".
With one exception, a somewhat bland soprano, the soloists are marvelous, singing with great expression and conviction to fully convey the meaning of every word. The small chorus is divided 5/8/6/6, more lower voices than upper, which produces a lovely darkish timbre--and it sings with impeccable intonation and good diction. The orchestra, including the aforementioned soloists, has a lovely sound, and conductor Ludger Rémy finds the right pace for every passage. The recording is warm and intimate, with lots of space around the singers and instrumentalists. [10/16/2000]

Telemann surprises connoisseurs and lovers of his orchestral music again and again through his unusual combination of instruments and melodic ingenuity. There are still impressive pieces in his oeuvre that are not or only too rarely recorded. The Concerto Stella Matutina presents some of Telemann‘s orchestral art, which mix together principles of the concerto, sonata and suite genres.Founded in 2005, the Austrian Concerto Stella Matutina perform familiar and forgotten works from the 17th-18th c., extending to experimental projects in music and dance, often with artist collaboration.
