The joy of hearing two master musicians getting Beethoven absolutely right

Admirers of the Beaux Arts Trio may be distraught at the news that Menahem Pressler is to disband the group he founded. Yet he here serves notice, one hopes, of a slew of fascinating projects to follow. There is much of the art that conceals art in these simply lovely, gentle yet probing performances. It's an album to live with, and one looks forward to Pressler's next venture.

Heaven-sent Taboos, the eighth volume of the Ludwig van Beethoven piano sonata recordings by pianist Timothy Ehlen, marks the completion of his cycle for Azica. Currently Assoc. Prof. Of Piano at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Timothy Ehlen has performed extensively in the U.S. and Europe as a soloist and chamber player. In addition to numerous solo, concerto and chamber performances at the Krannert Center in Champaign, recent recitals include Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Cleveland Orchestra's Schubert Bi-Centennial Series in Cleveland and many others.

After his Lincoln Center debut in 1988, sponsored by the World Piano Competition, The New York Times rave that his "playing was filled with elegant personality[...] recalled bygone artists like Robert Casadesus and especially Walter Gieseking in their mastery of both 18th century and impressionist music[...] immaculate technique."

For most of the last fifteen years, the destiny of pianist and conductor Christian Zacharias has been linked with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, of which he was Principal Conductor and Artistic Director from 2000-13. His leadership resulted in invitations to prestigious venues and led to numerous recordings. He was named Artist of the Year at Cannes MIDEM, 2007 and in 2010 received the rank of Officer in the Order of Arts and Letters. This 2-DVD Bel-Air release of Beethoven's complete piano concertos presents Mr. Zacharias at the piano as well as conducting the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra.
