The opportunity to celebrate, in 2020, the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven alongside the 30th anniversary of German reunification is akin to a gift for a label that has been instrumental in preserving the recording heritage of the GDR, offering as it does the opportunity for a retrospective view and assessment of the past. This series with 10 new editions from the archive of ETERNA recordings includes audio productions from the early days of the label as well as later productions from the late 80s. Partly remastered from the original tapes and provided with the original covers, these historic-legendary recordings shine in new glamour. The present volume presents Beethoven's Mass in D Major: "Missa Solemnis," performed by the Rundfunkchor Leipzig and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under the baton of Kurt Masur.

Ludwig van Beethoven is probably one of the most interpreted composers of all time. Especially in the Beethoven year 2020 there are countless releases of his well-known works. For his new album, pianist Matthias Kirschnereit has therefore set himself the challenge of exploring and recording the unknown jewels of Beethoven's piano music: "My aim in this album is to take works by Beethoven that are not generally familiar and give them new luster... Pieces, that is, that do not necessarily set out to change the world. I am no archaeologist; my task is not to rummage in attics or search libraries and archives for hitherto unpublished works. Everything has long been in print, as my intensive collaboration with the publishers Henle and Wiener Urtext Edition has confirmed. So, I started looking at what I could put together... and I was simply amazed."

There is hardly a better way to approach Ludwig van Beethoven than through his piano concertos. Beethoven's own instrument was the piano, and in his improvisations - which made him the darling of the Viennese salons - he merged virtuosity and unbridled expression. The piano concertos give a clear idea of these performances. At the same time, they are prime examples of Beethoven's ability to create large orchestral works with seemingly endless arcs of tension. This release features his piano concertos nos. 1-5, performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker with special guest Mitsuko Uchida. Legendary pianist Mitsuko Uchida brings a deep insight into the music she plays through her own quest for truth and beauty. Renowned for her interpretations of Mozart, Schubert, Schumann and Beethoven, she has also illuminated the music of Berg, Schoenberg, Webern and Boulez for a new generation of listeners.
