On his final recording, the great actor Bruno Ganz narrates Tennyson’s poem, Enoch Arden, with its echoes of the everlasting stories of Odysseus and Robinson Crusoe. In a unique synthesis of words and music, Tennyson’s verse is further deepened by R. Strauss’ flamboyant musical depiction, played here by pianist Kirill Gerstein. Bruno Ganz; 22 March 1941 – 16 February 2019) was a Swiss actor whose career in German television and film productions spanned nearly 60 years. He was known for his collaborations with the directors Werner Herzog, Éric Rohmer, Francis Ford Coppola, and Wim Wenders, earning widespread recognition with his roles as Jonathan Zimmerman in The American Friend (1977), Jonathan Harker in Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) and Damiel the Angel in Wings of Desire (1987).

The tension between a high-flying artistic existence and down-to-earth middle-class life in the person of the composer Richard Strauss was the theme of the 2011 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Richard Strauss Festival. The musical highlight of the festival was the concert performance of Strauss’s opera Intermezzo (1924) by the Munich Radio Orchestra under Ulf Schirmer. Brigitte Fassbaender, artistic director of the Festival, was present on the stage – in many minor speaking roles and also as a skat player.

The music of Johann Strauss reflects a lifestyle, a refinement ... a true Viennese tradition. At the same time, this music simply creates joie de vivre, an almost uncontrollable urge to dance. It is these feelings and these emotions Anima Eterna and its leader, Jos van Immerseel communicate with delicacy and conviction; also with a view to the greatest possible proximity to the score as it was conceived at the time of its creation.

2014 marks a year of celebration recognizing the 150th birthday year of the German late-Romantic orchestral, operatic and lied master composer, Richard Strauss (1864-1949). Arabella (premiered 1933, Dresden) was the last of the half dozen Strauss works to feature a libretto by the great Austrian writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal. This production, from the most recent Salzburg Easter Festival is, after Capriccio, the second of three Richard Strauss operas C Major is releasing in honor of the composer’s birth, life and work. How often have the three musicians of the Munich Piano Trio opened our ears with unique music! The new, the 9th GENUIN album of the renowned ensemble is also a voyage of discovery to works that one encounters very rarely in the concert hall. We become acquainted with two youthful works, namely a piano trio from 1878 and a piano quartet from 1884. Founded in 1982, the Munich Piano Trio is one of the most active and sought-after German chamber music ensembles.
