James Gilchrist’s latest Linn recording encompasses three of the greatest examples of the song cycle genre, Robert Schumann’s Liederkreis, op. 24 and op. 39, and Dichterliebe, op. 48. James Gilchrist is sought after for operatic roles, ensemble performances and as a respected, and frequent, lieder recitalist. His musical partner Anna Tilbrook is one of Britain's most exciting pianists, with a considerable reputation in song recitals and chamber music. She made her debut at Wigmore Hall in 1999 and has since become a regular performer at Europe’s major concert halls and festivals.

With this recording the Abeggs have completed their collection of Schumann trios, and simply everything about this product is right: On the cover, instead of the usual somewhat stilted photos of the artists, we see a lovely sketch of Schumann by Horst Janssen. And instead of vague, flowery music stories, the booklet provides an involved and analytically precise essay, in which Jan Reichow successfully paints a new picture of Schumann. The recording technology of this CD provides a relaxed, natural sound. None of this would count for much, were it not for the Abeggs themselves, who make excellent music. That is how chamber music can sound when musicians think together. (NDR)

Productions by the Munich Piano Trio delight us time and again: one time they'll discover unknown works and draw an "Ah!" of astonishment, while the next time they'll focus on the great works of the repertoire and "Wow!" us with their marvelous interpretation. The eighth recording by the ensemble, now celebrating it's 33rd year, is inspired by Robert Schumann's guiding principle: the artist's mission is to cast light into the depths of the human heart. And if speakers could not only emit sound, but were capable of shining, there is no doubt they would be doing so during what is perhaps Schumann's most well-known Piano Trio (No. 2) and his equally wonderful Piano Quartet... Bravo to the persistence of great artists!
