The three works selected for this recording by pianist Caspar Frantz – Davidsbündlertänze, op. 6, his first great piano cycle; Nachtstücke, op. 23, and Gesänge der Frühe, op. 123 –are quite dissimilar in some ways and yet closely related in others. • Typical of the arch-Romantics, all have as their inspiration a literary source, and all three differently represent Schumann’s early creative burst and his somewhat ill-considered latterly decline. +Mr. Frantz is an internationally recognized concert and recording artist, with two acclaimed previous recordings for the Ars Produktion label.

Rarely has a relationship between two people been as happy and artificially fruitful as that between Clara and Robert Schumann: a long, contested love, torn apart tragically early on, yet in little more than a decade of working together they have created what one would like to call the heart of German Romanticism - conjured up by a brilliant composer, promoted by his congenial interpreter, who ultimately grew up to become a great composer herself. Judith Jáuregui's first album for Ars Produktion, a live recording with works by Debussy and others, was received very positively by the critics. Her interpretations were praised for their pianistic sovereignty and her playing was convincing with its extroverted nature and freshness. On her second album she plays together with the symphony orchestra Camera Musicae (OCM) under the direction of Tomàs Grau.

Florian Glemser demonstrates a particular and profound understanding of the Schumann works performed on this album. The exhilaration, the depression, the obsession, the madness, the tenderness, the belligerence, the resignation, but above all the love and the beauty are all there, delicately and thoughtfully interwoven into the fabric of the performance. This is a powerful interpretation full of color and hidden depths which carries the lsitener on a journey of fascinating exploration into the psyche of the tortured composer. Volume 1 of the series presents the First Symphony in B-flat major (Op. 38), Overture, Scherzo and Finale (Op. 52) and the original 1841 version of the Fourth Symphony in D minor (Op. 120).
