With their new album Generations, Aleksandra and Alexander Grychtolik present famous 'influencers' of music for keyboard instruments who played a decisive role in shaping the transition from the galant style to Viennese Classicism. The journey begins with W.F. Bach and C.P.E. Bach, who composed works for two harpsichords in succession to their father J.S. Bach, and leads via J.C. Bach to Mozart, who is known to have been strongly inspired by the music of the Bach sons and, like the youngest Bach son, was one of the first composers to create piano works for four hands.

Four of the composers on this recording met in real life – in Potsdam, in spring 1747. In this album they are reunited, joined by the flautist-composer who brings their encounter to life once more, the Swiss-born Markus Brönnimann. The stylistic contrasts between works three centuries apart serve to accentuate their strengths, the formal elegance of the earlier pieces underlining the expressive liberty of the recent ones. Brönnimann combines the two worlds with his luminous arrangement of one of the best-known of all classical compositions: Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor.

The Bachs must count as one of the most musical families in the history of Western music. Next to Johann Sebastian Bach, there were many other outstanding musicians and composers in the family. This release presents a varied anthology of flute music by Johann Sebastian and his composing sons – Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel, Johann Christoph Friedrich and Johann Christian – with every piece containing typical compositional characteristics of each of them.
