The work's three movements - Above, At, and Within - explore the ocean from sky, surface, and depths, blending dynamic percussion, piano, marimbas, vibraphones, and haunting vocalises to evoke the sea's beauty, turbulence, and mystery. This immersive collaboration goes beyond mere portraiture, offering a meditation on humanity's relationship with the ocean. The choice of this poem as the sole textual material for the composition of this set of vocal pieces was dictated as much by the evident musicality of Leopardi's verses as by the immense dreamlike openness of his imagination. The musicality of this language, the tonic accents specific to Italian, of course, but also the rhythm provided by the particular scansion of these fifteen verses. The multiplicity and diversity of the themes addressed by Leopardi, in only 15 verses, offer the composer a range of perspectives, paths to follow, and characters to explore, such that the challenge required diversity in the vocal treatment as well (since this is only a question of song, without instrumental intervention). This also justified the formal division into several pieces, each treating an aspect of the poem, sometimes fragmented, in a particular mode of vocal expression. After exploring registers ranging from simple declamation to the greatest vocal virtuosity, from the extremely low to the very high, from one single voice to several, the work concludes with nothing but the singers' respiration (breathing) recorded in an anechoic chamber the body's own rustling, now voiceless, expressing itself solely through breath. The two scores that \"compose\" the music (two because the first and third pieces use the same one) are nothing more than a framework: a very limited number of directions given to the musicians and the conductor, mostly consisting of short melodic or harmonic fragments positioned in boxes (what is called Rahmen-Notation in German) that extend for the entire duration of a section. To bring a piece to life, each performer must perceive what the others are playing, in a relationship of independence-dependence. This is because the composer expressly requests that each musician performs any melodic fragment, whenever they wish, however they wish, and in whatever order they wish, thus in a context of absolute autonomy. At the same time, this fragment is performed alongside other fragments played by other musicians, and it relates to them, creating an interconnectedness among the parts involved. This is most likely the attitude that Rita Ueda invites us to adopt, directing our attention and perception towards it. A choice of sharing also suggested by the meeting of three different musical cultures, represented in these pieces by the solo instruments, each coming from a different musical tradition, alongside the traditional Western orchestra: the Persian tar, the Chinese guzheng, and the Japanese sho.","brand":"Stradivarius","offers":[{"title":"CD","offer_id":46012430975210,"sku":"8011570373281","price":16.99,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0614\/3423\/3066\/files\/4424639-3387859.jpg?v=1778194995"},{"product_id":"kevin-swierkosz-lenart-luminaria","title":"Kevin Swierkosz-Lenart: Luminaria","description":"Writing the liner notes to this album necessarily compels me to begin with a preamble which fully complieswith the music and renditions it contains: listening to a discographical work is an active act of creation, the moment when we choose to shift our point of observation towards an imaginative reality that, once experienced, appears more authentic and faithful than everyday's ordinariness. This record is intimately aimed at a cultural elite, aware and solid, not necessarily to be identified in guitar confraternities , capable of seizing and elaborating the connections and the sentimental, substantial correspondences between the sound of the guitar and the cultural facts the author decided to express through it. The title Luminaria recalls the feeling of a Van Gogh's Night, where lights do not seem to belong to the city anymore, but rather to nature. The author himself says about these works for guitar: the landscape is nocturnal, we're moving within gilardinian poetics, the pieces are no pianistic milestones, nor are they orchestral solos; they're feeble village lights at the procession for a saint, which do not illuminate the night, and yet make it exist. These are works complying with the poetics of places and of memory, both converging in a third one represented by distance. This music deals with an elsewhere, referring to here and now rather than to a spacial acception, there's no irony, magic or enchanted realism, but a vision forged in architectures dense with a thought that fiercely invokes this very hic et nunc, recalling the powerful verse by Montale to burn now , no other is my meaning. Kevin SwierkoszLenart entrusts these pieces to a young guitarist who has all the qualities to receive and elaborate the author's intimate perceptions; Giovanni Martinelli, dedicatory of these oevres, has one gift distinguishing him from most of his generation's performers: the precocious ability to observe the many facets of things and of the world from above, whose vision he renders deeply and very clearly through the guitar. Thus, both special and rare seems the artistic alliance between author and performer, as if they showed the way one another, and the composer's ideas are embraced by the guitarist with such natural predisposition.","brand":"Stradivarius","offers":[{"title":"CD","offer_id":46012432482538,"sku":"8011570373304","price":16.99,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0614\/3423\/3066\/files\/4433270-3412903.jpg?v=1778194738"},{"product_id":"bliss","title":"Bliss","description":"Why our title Bliss? The songs contained in this album explore the sentiment of love in it's several aspects, shading from feelings of desire to regret for absence, from passion to surrender, from tenderness to melancholy. Amy Beach, Ccile Chaminade and Gilda Ruta transformed the evocative power of love poetry into music, capturing in their canti d'amore moments of pure ecstasy and heartrending beauty. The literature for this instrumental combination is therefore relatively recent, with isolated episodes emerging mainly in the 20th and 21st centuries. Fuga dal Tempo, the recording project of Duo Escualo, was born from the desire to explore and promote this production, focusing on Italian composers or those of Italian origin, and offering a chronological perspective from 1969 to the present day. The title holds a dual meaning: on the one hand, it alludes to the temporal suspension that listening to music can generate; on the other, it evokes the possibility of escaping from the linear perception of time through a musical journey that, though rooted in history, aims to transcend it's boundaries. The three works presented here - the Sonata by Radams Gnattali, the Suite No. 1 by Raffaele Bellafronte, and Fuga dal Tempo by Francesco Sgambati - embody three different approaches to this idea, intertwining tradition and innovation, popular roots and contemporary languages. With this recording, Duo Escualo not only enriches the limited repertoire for this ensemble, but also offers a reflection on music as an experience that traverses past and present, tradition and research, in a flow that, precisely because it is musical, is both within and beyond time.","brand":"Stradivarius","offers":[{"title":"CD","offer_id":46012436054250,"sku":"8011570373373","price":16.99,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0614\/3423\/3066\/files\/4488843-3518052.jpg?v=1778216406"},{"product_id":"accursio-antonio-cortese-peregrinatio","title":"Accursio Antonio Cortese: Peregrinatio","description":"At the age of five, Accursio Antonio Cortese began studying music and the organ with his grandfather, D. The work is a personal response to Jones's artistry, showcasing his dazzling high register and individual articulations and inflections that are unique to his playing. Released by Ekkozone, this landmark album showcases world premiere recordings of four major works, tracing four decades of Reynolds's trailblazing contributions to contemporary music. The title work, The Promises of Darkness (1975), pays homage to Reynolds's mentor Roberto Gerhardt. Scored for an ensemble of 11 players, this piece masterfully conjures vivid colors and an almost cinematic sense of dread, revealing Reynolds as a composer unafraid to probe the edges of musical and emotional experience. From 1985 comes Mistral, for strings, brass, and amplified harpsichord. Although inspired by an encounter with the forceful Mediterranean wind, the piece is \"neither illustrative nor programmatic,\" according to the composer. Mistral has previously been released in a lo-fi live recording, but the highly refined score - with it's crystalline articulate harpsichord - is finally brought to life in this new version, which Reynolds himself has hailed as \"a triumph.\" A relentless exploration of the interplay between two harmonic strata, Dionysus (1990) involves \"a blend of metaphor and pragmatics\" and is captured in a breathtakingly precise performance, with expressive solos from flutist Helene Navasse and trumpeter Laszlo Molnar. Closing the album is the electroacoustic Positings (2013), where the Mathias Reumert Group is joined by computer musician and Reynolds collaborator Paul Hembree. Seamlessly blending live performance with electronic textures, Positings embodies Reynolds's innovative spirit, pushing the boundaries of sound and structure. The album shows Reynolds' experimental fervor remains undimmed. Each work discovers in sound, and in the case of WISDOM's Sources, in imagery as well - a way of thinking through the conditions of being alive in the 21st century. Together, they testify to the depth of Reynolds's friendships and the range of his imagination, with both works growing out of collaborations with performers long entwined with Reynolds's creative life. Cast for flute and strings, 'O'o was written for and is performed by the eminent Canadian flutist Robert Aitken, a friend and collaborator with Reynolds since the 1960s. The work also features the award-winning and distinguished Canadian violinists Yolanda Bruno and Mark Lee, violist Rory McLeod, and cellist Leana Rutt. Similarly, WISDOM's Sources, a duo for violin and viola, was composed for the legendary violinist Irvine Arditti and illustrious violist Ralf Ehlers during a visit to San Diego in the summer of 2024. In Reynolds's words, a creative project \"burns fuel of some sort.\" That fuel may be emotional, philosophical, experiential, even technical. Each, rooted in the exploration of timbre, 'O'o and WISDOM's Sources represent two distinct stories - one involving the haunting tale of an extinct Hawaiian bird, the other the search for wisdom across cultures - and each burns it's way toward revelation. In 'O'o, the novel sonic chemistry of juxtaposing the harmonic capacity of multiple strings with the melodic character of the flute provides a sonic environment within which outlines of calling and responding gradually emerge; evolving into the identities of the players as well as the last male and female pair of the now-vanished songbirds. In WISDOM's Sources, \"one of the most adventuresome pieces I've ever attempted,\" the spark of collaboration becomes the fire itself - an exploration of 'wisdom' conceived through Reynolds' creative bond with Irvine Arditti during the COVID pandemic. The close alignment of friendship, musical sensibility, and shared ways of thinking is echoed in the sonorous match of the viola and violin. From the outset, Reynolds envisioned WISDOM's Sources as a multimedial creation, and his longtime associate, filmmaker, and video artist Kyle Johnson created an independent visual composition that unfolds in parallel to the music. The work represents a new mode of multidimensional creation that Reynolds is determined to pursue. Celebrating the composer's 70th birthday, this album reflects his belief in the continuity of musical culture, shaped by his studies with the legendary pedagogue Nadia Boulanger. As one of her last students, Conte embraces her wisdom that \"true personality in music is only revealed through the deep knowledge of the personalities of others.\" His compositions resonate with this philosophy, drawing inspiration from past masters while forging his own expressive voice. Highlights include the quietly intense Elegy for Violin and Piano and the dynamic Piano Trio No. 2, whose four movements pay tribute to Erich Korngold, Stephen Sondheim, Frank Martin, and Beethoven. Also featured are the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, Sonata for French Horn and Piano, and Aria and Fugue for Cello and Piano, each showcasing Conte's mastery of instrumental color and structural clarity. Embracing the twelve-tone technique in his later years, Stravinsky reshaped his contrapuntal voice and produced works of rigorous structure, spiritual depth, and emotional intensity. These late compositions, from In Memoriam Dylan Thomas to Requiem Canticles, reveal a composer who fused intellectual precision with ritualistic power, creating music that is as moving as it is masterful. Featuring an exceptional lineup of soloists - Berit Norbakken, Marianne Beate Kielland, Guy Cutting, Thomas Walker, Tobias Berndt, and Stephan MacLeod - together with harmonium players Dirk Luijmes and Martin Logar, this recording unites compelling interpreters of vocal and choral music. Under Daniel Reuss's artistic direction of over thirty years, Cappella Amsterdam, together with the Noord Nederlands Orkest, bring these masterpieces to life with unmatched clarity and devotion. Performed with striking intensity and nuance by the Al Pari Quartet, this album spans a landscape of sonic textures, rhythmic complexity, and deeply personal expression. The Composers \u0026amp; Works Stephan Thelen contributes two powerful pieces-\"Urgent Call\" and \"Continuum in 9\"-bridging minimalist structure and progressive rock energy. Drawing from his background as a mathematician and founder of the band Sonar, Thelen's music embraces polyrhythmic layering and mathematical precision while retaining an almost visceral emotional charge. \"Urgent Call\" is a driving invocation of Thelen's sonic ideals, while \"Continuum in 9\" melds crackling textures with electric urgency, breaking boundaries between concert hall and rock stage. Gebhard Ullmann's String Quartet No. 1 unfolds as a meditative, melodic journey across movements that shimmer with emotional clarity. A prominent jazz saxophonist and clarinetist, Ullmann here turns to composition as a space of reflection. His quartet opens with ethereal sul tasto textures and builds into complex interrelations of melody, memory, and transformation. Inspired by themes from his own creative archives, Ullmann's music resonates with a sense of transience and transcendence. Udo Agnesens, represented by String Quartet No. 23, offers the most introspective contribution. Though a prolific composer with over 30 quartets to his name, Agnesens often writes without seeking performance-his focus lies in creation over dissemination. The 23rd quartet is marked by a solemn pace and emotional depth, demanding immense control from the performers. It draws listeners inward, revealing it's subtle beauty through patience and restraint. \"If you don't have the time to really listen to the music,\" he says, \"maybe you should be doing something else\". The Al Pari Quartet Founded in 2017 by students of the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, the Al Pari Quartet-Dominik Kossakowski, Alicja Miruk-Mirska, Wiktoria Trzebowska, and Elzbieta Rychwalska-Dobrowolska -has become a formidable force in contemporary chamber music. Their work on this recording demonstrates not only technical mastery but deep interpretive insight. They deliver each composition with clarity, warmth, and expressive sensitivity, bridging the complex rhythmic structures and emotional demands of each piece.","brand":"Fineline","offers":[{"title":"CD","offer_id":46012490809578,"sku":"608917243222","price":14.99,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0614\/3423\/3066\/files\/4454990-3445193_1a861c80-f90d-461d-8101-07d1054afa4a.jpg?v=1778198265"},{"product_id":"vesper","title":"Vesper","description":"Sean Shibe's fifth PENTATONE album, Vesper, presents a striking collection of contemporary guitar works by the late Harrison Birtwistle, James Dillon, and Thomas Ades, all composed by musicians who do not play the instrument themselves. Shibe's interpretations reveal the instrument's extraordinary colour, subtlety, and capacity for transformation, bringing each work to life with imagination and nuance. For some of Birtwistle's pieces, Shibe performs on Sylvette (2021), a guitar made by luthier Simon Ambridge in collaboration with French-British artist Lydia Corbett. In countless workshops, recording sessions, performances, and masterclasses I've watched her elicit previously undiscovered timbral nuance, dynamic possibility, and personal virtuosity from players and composers alike. Hers is a creative energy so irrepressible that somewhere amidst the cascade of commissions, awards, and international flights to attend performances of her work she, to mention just two examples, launched Chicago's largest-scale new music festival (Ear Taxi) as well as one of the country's most prolific incubators of new work, The Grossman Ensemble. I'm happy to report that the performances captured within this tracklist provide significant evidence in substantiating this bold claim. To my ears, Sol offers Gusty's compositional luminosity as a collection of rituals for introspection, spiritual stimulus, and, at the very least, a reminder that light can prevail in darkness. Particularly enticing is that when imbibed as a whole, this record shepherds us through an extraordinary ceremony that, as with each of the five rites comprising it, tenders the possibility for subtle yet substantive restoration and, ultimately, transformation. Doyle Armbrust","brand":"Nimbus","offers":[{"title":"CD","offer_id":46012525314282,"sku":"0710357646423","price":23.99,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0614\/3423\/3066\/files\/4474297-3493502.jpg?v=1778218340"},{"product_id":"odd-sympathies","title":"ODD SYMPATHIES","description":"For over two decades, Matthew Schellhorn has championed the creativity of living composers through commissions and premires, bringing new music to a wider audience. Some of the moods and musical material of the opera appear in the octet, as a kind of reflection. With the instrumentation of Schubert's famous octet in mind, Fagerlund has created an intense, sometimes almost explosive work. For Arcantio, a double bass concerto in variation form composed for and dedicated to Niek de Groot, Fagerlund imagined a musical atmosphere from some distant, archaic time. Throughout the concerto the soloist constantly guides the orchestra in new directions - at times a virtuoso, at times meditative, as if in a trance. Sky II, originally composed for baroque ensemble, consists of a single movement that presents a fast and flowing, almost playful musical idiom. The musical expression combines dance-like rhythms, minimalism and field-like soundscapes that sweep over the listener. The fast flow of the music is interrupted only by a repeated translucent harmony, which also opens and closes the work.
