The Staatsphilharmonie Nurnberg under the direction of Marcus Bosch present their latest recording: The Symphony No. 5 by Antonin Dvorak. The fifth symphony was composed in the year 1875 and was first performed 4 years after it was written. The symphony is complemented on this album by Holoubek's piece The wild Dove.

Since her European stage debut in the year 2000, South Korean soprano Sunhae Im has proven her artistic versatility in a multitude of international productions. Her agile voice was particularly convincing in the stage works of Handel and Vivaldi. The present album with the bFIVE Recorder Consort shows that she can do more than just voice acrobatics and baroque opera. Together they play William Byrd’s songs with subtle and elevating authenticity. Sunhae Im Ms. Im has internationally been invited to renowned festivals such as the Edinburgh International Festival, Mostly Mozart Festival, Salzburg Festival, or Haydn International Festival and has worked with the New York Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, or the Munich Philharmonic. Her repertoire includes works by Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, Gluck, Rameau, Charpentier, Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Mahler, and Mendelssohn.

Already at the age of five Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729) was a sensation as a musical wunderkind, and Louis XIV encouraged her to further develop her "wonderful talent". Extraordinary for women at the time, she remained highly esteemed throughout her life as an interpreter, teacher and composer. The Bach Players provide a subtle interpretation of this exquisite music. The Bach Players is a group of singers and players known for their engaging programmes of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music. According to needs, the ensemble varies in size from three to twenty-five musicians. In their concerts The Bach Players make links between composers, national styles, and developments in music – to provide a wider context in which to present the famous composers of the time. They play on original instruments, and all vocal music is sung in its original language. When singers are involved they are part of the group and not ‘add ons’. They work without a conductor. Their concerts are lively, informal events in which the musicians engage actively with their audiences.

"I know of no virtuoso trio of this class in the entire world." (Wieland Wagner, 1934) The Trio d’Anches (Reed Trio), of whom Wieland refers, bassoonist Fernand Oubradous, Myrtil Morel (oboe) and Pierre Lefebvre (clarinet) came together in the Paris of the 1920s. This tribute to them, the colorful Parisian world of the time and that typical French line-up of oboe, clarinet and bassoon features a number of original compositions and arrangements as played by the first-rate Trio Lézard.

On Sweet Melancholy, the selections include compositions by English composers which focus around the German idea of ‘Weltschmerz,’ or the weariness caused by the ills of the world. Dance settings and fantasies by Thomas Lupo, Henry Purcell, John Hingeston, William Byrd, and more are featured here. The Cellini Consort was founded by three gambists, Goals Eketorp, Brian Franklin, and Thomas Goetschel in 2012. Since then the ensemble has explored the music of the Renaissance and Baroque, filling each performance with their originality and freshness.

Occasioned to coincide with the 230th birthday of the German composer Louis (Ludwig) Spohr (1784-1859) in April, 2014, this release of the new, live recording of his oratorio Der Fall Babylons (1839-40) features the Staatsorchester Braunschweig, conducted by Matthias Stanze and a fine cast of singers including the St. Petersburg-born soprano Ekaterina Kudryavtseva and the Swiss tenor Matthias Stier.

Volker David Kirchner has repeatedly been denied the recognition he deserves because he is out-of-step with the aesthetic ideas that the avant-garde believed were the only valid ones. For Kirchner, e.g. The reference to the tradition and particularly to the sound of the human voice cannot be denied. His obsidian songs are characterized by almost theatrical drama, while the songs of poems by Else Lasker-Schuler and the cycle Media vita in morte sumus rather emphasize the meditative. The two last mentioned works were written for the mezzo voice heard on this recording, Julia Ostertag.

There have been frequent attempts to get Wagner's Ring into a symphonic format. + However, the new version by Andreas Tarkmann does not only want to align the highlights, but to compress the opus to its very own orchestral drama – divided into four well-defined parts the quintessence of the Ring operas is clearer and the figures more finely depicted. + Tarkmann’s talent for concise escalation makes this version a special pleasure, lacking nothing essential in the entirely. + Despite minor compositional procedures, this symphonic "short-Ring" at any time remains 100% recognizable as Wagner.

Carl Friedrich Abel was one of the few composers to be painted by a famous painter. Two portraits of the composer, done by Thomas Gainsborough, are preserved. This shows his status as one of the foremost composers of his day. This release features his Sonatas and Trios from the Ledenburg Collection. Many of these works are receiving their world premiere recording with this release. Thomas Fritzsch is one of the finest gambists of our day. Joining him on period instruments are pianist Michael Schonheit, violinist Eva Salonen, and cellist Katharina Holzhey.

Georg Christoph Wagenseil (1715-1777) belongs, as his Viennese colleague Georg Matthias Monn, to that avant-garde of the 18th century, which replaced the instrumental music and thus also the then new symphonic genre from the dependence of Baroque dance forms and the musical theater. So they prepared the way for Haydn's and Mozart's later development towards fully trained "Wiener Klassik". Christophe Coin and the Orchestra Le Phénix present the two cello concertos and a symphony in C major.
