Marco Marazzoli was a composer, harpist, and singer, and as such moved in the highest circles of the clergy. This was certainly not only due to his own priesthood, but above all to the extraordinary quality of his creations. He was born around 1602 in Parma and died in Rome in 1662. He was successful with large-scale works and in the field of chamber music cantatas. Towards the end of his life, he composed a series of experimental vocal works for six voices and a small instrumental ensemble that even satisfied the demands of Christ's representative on earth. After all, in these miniature dramas, the composer and his poets celebrated the Pope as a man of peace, through whose mediation the Franco-Spanish War had ended in 1659. This recognition can still be felt today.

According to an old tradition, it is perfectly legitimate to arrange works for one instrument to another, if this does not detract from the substance of the work. This is what the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart likely told himself when he arranged three piano sonatas by his admired role model Johann Christian Bach into small concertos (KV 107) in his early years. This is also what Silke Aichhorn told herself with equal justification when she arranged one of these pieces for the harp alongside concertos by the German Johann Samuel Schroter, who was almost the same age. The pairing is no coincidence. Mozart and his father both admired the works of Schroter, born in Guben, Lusatia, who enjoyed a distinguished career as a pianist. In 1782, he succeeded the "London Bach" as music teacher to Her Majesty Queen Charlotte - unfortunately not for very long. Schroter died three years before Amadeus and at the same age.

Whether melting away like a singing gondolier on the Grand Canal or tumbling about like a Eulenspiegel, whether clucking melancholically in the depths like a brooding hen or bouncing acrobatically across the high wire: after the clarinet had outgrown it's infant shoes, it was soon "on everyone's lips" thanks to it's rapidly expanding possibilities-praised by enthusiastic advocates like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, technically advanced by new virtuosos, and entrusted with the most varied tasks by experiment-loving composers. In the front ranks of these pioneers stood Carl Stamitz, one of the first second-generation Mannheimers, who wrote nearly a dozen concertante works tailored to the instrument's slender body, thereby leaving the guild of clarinetists a precious little catechism that can now be heard complete on recording for the first time.

When Hans G�l died in Edinburgh on 3 October 1987, he had just celebrated his 97th birthday and could look back on a life that had truly experienced personal, cultural, and political upheaval. Astonishingly, there is no trace of these often tragic and dramatic events in his music. The core of his output is dominated by the cheerfulness of a spirit who never forgot his artistic home-the old imperial city of Vienna, whose special, inimitable flair can even be seen in his final works. The chamber music for strings collected here offers convincing examples of this fidelity to himself. G�l was 24 when his Intermezzi were printed and 86 when he completed his transfigured string quintet-and despite all blows of fate, there was obviously nothing that could destroy his optimistic belief in beauty.

Jesus, tortured and dying for the sins of the world: This is how the Hamburg librettist and senator Barthold Heinrich Brockes (1680-1747) titled his dramatic adaptation of the Passion narrative-a text so popular that it was set to music nearly a dozen times in Hamburg alone. Composers included Reinhard Keiser, Johann Mattheson, George Frideric Handel, and Georg Philipp Telemann, among others. The jurist and diplomat Jacob Schuback (1726-1784) also composed his version of this so-called�Brockes-Passion. And one must not assume that he, the son of a highly respected family, was merely a dilettante in the art of music. What Schuback created around the age of 30 during his musical "leisure hours" is, in the truest sense of the word, a gripping work. Choruses, recitatives, and arias follow one another with an almost operatic intensity, while characters imbued with vivid reality come to life with striking immediacy. Unsurprisingly, this Passion acquires a more profound, secondary significance

After Stralsund and Danzig, Magdeburg is the third stop on Manfred Cordes' journey through the cities of the Hanseatic League. This stop not only takes him to a city quite far from the sea but also to the earliest period of Protestant church music. Magdeburg introduced the Reformation already in 1524, just seven years after Luther's decisive act. Immediately, the transformation began of what the former monk from Eisleben cherished as a "gift and blessing from God" and saw as an effective means of preaching the Gospel. A genuine "Magdeburg School" emerged, with it's representatives cultivating and developing the music of the new faith up until the Thirty Years' War. This program follows that tradition, bringing to life the works of cantors from Martin Agricola to Heinrich Grimm, thus allowing compositions spanning approximately 120 years to resound once more.

Philatelically interested friends of music might be tempted to title this rarity the "Mauritius" of early music, for of the First Part of Sacred Concertos that Hamburg's municipal musician and Kapellmeister Johann Schop published in 1644, only a single complete copy survives in Germany, while the three others traceable worldwide are preserved only fragmentarily. For the value of an artwork, however, different criteria apply than mere rarity, and precisely these Schop's church music fulfills entirely: supplemented by some of the instrumental pieces that the composer and violin virtuoso once played for noble dance entertainments, the filigree, directly appealing song-settings rise in their wondrous weightlessness, full of hope, above the devastating times-here reigns the peace that in reality would wait another four years to arrive.

By modern standards, Thomas Muntzer might be described as a liberation theologian. A few years before his violent death, the ordained priest married a former nun (like Martin Luther), devoted himself to helping the needy, and ultimately became actively involved in the Peasants' War-actions that alienated him from both the secular authorities and Luther himself. Muntzer, an impassioned advocate for the oppressed, met his end on the executioner's block in 1525. On May 27, 2025, the 500th anniversary of his execution will be commemorated. To mark the occasion, the vocal ensemble Amarcord presents two works Muntzer created as part of his liturgical reforms: the first German-language Christmas Mass and the�Amt�(Office) and Matins for Easter. Muntzer translated the texts from Latin into German, aligning them with traditional chorale melodies. The result is a deeply contemplative experience, lasting over 75 minutes.

Just in time for the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss II on 25 October 2025, cpo is releasing the complete recording of a comedy that will itself celebrate it's 130th anniversary on 4 December. In Waldmeister, the undisputed king of the waltz once again pulls out all the stops and delivers a delightful comedy whose scandalous mix-ups ultimately dissolve in a high-proof punch. It's distinctive taste features a hero with a botanical title (Galium odoratum) and a series of evergreens - above all, the leitmotif and proverbial "Trau schau wem" ("Trust, but check"), which is enthusiastically taken up by friend and foe alike. This live recording was made during the Staatstheater am G�rtnerplatz's guest performance in Vienna and whose new production contributed to this year's Austrian Strauss celebrations.

Everything has an end sometime. Similarly, this chapter from the great book of Georg Philipp Telemann, which holds a significant place in our label's repertoire, is also noteworthy. After two decades, we have now recorded all the violin concertos that this artesian spring of music committed to paper with overflowing imagination throughout his lifetime. This presents more than three dozen entertaining works, some in expanded suite (overture) form, others in the standard three-movement structure-but always rich in subtle surprises and demanding solos involving up to four violins. This ninth and final volume is once again devoted to concertante duos and contains, as it were, as a bonus, "the" Viola Concerto in G major, which until our series appeared was widely regarded as Telemann's most "popular" contribution to the genre. Now, however, entirely new perspectives open up

Only few connoisseurs can say without hesitation who preceded Heinrich Schutz as Dresden's Court Conductor. The man's name was Rogier Michael who was born in Mons (Belgium) and was one of the last representatives of the Franco-Flemish school of vocal polyphony, that was sought after throughout Europe. In the meantime, Italy was setting the tone and older composers had to rethink their ways. Michaels succeeded in doing so. Among other things, his catalogue of works, which is not exactly huge, includes an innovative Weihnachtshistorie (1602), which was performed at the Dresden court for 50 (!) years - an all the more astonishing occurrence, as this music is by no means ostentatious. Combining the devotional purity with appropriate contemporary vocal and instrumental movements, a clear simplicity emerges. And so the Christmas Vespers of 1624, which the Ensemble Polyharmonique presents here, is still enchanting today.

We know relatively little about the composer and church musician Paul Ignaz Liechtenauer. His father was an organ builder and organist in Vienna, and Liechtenauer himself served as Kapellmeister in Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein until 1711. By 1715, he had taken up the position of organist at the Cathedral of Osnabruck, soon after assuming the title of "Capellmeister" and gaining a reputation for his liturgical music that was widely acclaimed. Four of the six masses he published in 1741 as Opus 2 are now featured on the latest CD by the Kolner Akademie, which, under the direction of it's founder, Michael Alexander Willens, once again astonishes us. There is a touch of local patriotism in this release: classic production osnabruck is located less than ten kilometers from the high church where the composer served for over 40 years.

Henriette Bosmans' mother was a pianist and her father played principal cello in Amsterdam's Concertgebouw Orchestra, so it is no wonder that both of these instruments were lasting influences on her musical thinking and sensibilities. Her friendship with cellists Marix Loevensohn and Frieda Belinfante did the rest to guide this Dutch composer's imagination towards the expressive possibilities of the "little violone". In addition to various pieces of chamber music, the somewhat Iberian-spiced Poeme as well as two concertos were written in the early 1920s. Despite their relative proximity in time, Henriette Bosmans succeeded in not repeating herself. The works are marked by imaginative forms, wildly varied tasks demanded of the soloist and a sophisticated treatment of the orchestra. Despite these works' success, they had disappeared into the annals of history for far too long.

Carl Reinecke's works are living proof that conservatism and originality are not mutually exclusive. His work rests on the shoulders of previous generations and nowhere does it depart from the harmonic or formal conventions that were part of the curriculum at conservatoires in the 19thcentury - and yet we will encounter a personality who did not hide behind formulae, but to a certain extent between the lines and in the details. In his oratorio Belsazar, premiered in 1859, he indulges extensively in the tension between God-fearing Israelites and the brutally blasphemous Babylonians. Some twenty years later, he produced a successful 'Concert Piece for Choir and Orchestra' in which vocal movements and instrumental interludes are combined in a novel way to create a unique and unusually poetic sequence of enchanting Sommertagsbilder (Pictures of a Summer's Day). It is an experience in changing moods

L'Orfeo Barockorchester and it's director Michi Gaigg have created an impressive discography through their close collaboration with cpo. Their repertoire spans from Baroque and Classical instrumental works to Schubert's symphonies and includes rarely performed compositions by Telemann and Haydn's delightful Incontro improvviso. New to the cpo catalog is their exploration of Johann Sebastian Bach by this refined, spirited ensemble. Seven sacred solo cantatas form the program, featuring two proven specialists in early music who sing the vocal part: Dutch bass-baritone Peter Kooij, awarded the Leipzig Bach Medal in 2016, and Austrian alto Margot Oitzinger compellingly demonstrate how people in the time of the great Thomaskantor strove to guide Christians on the right path.

Strictly speaking, composer Antonio Smareglia belonged to three cultural groups. His father was an Italian from Friuli, his mother Croatian, and he himself was born in Pola on the Istrian peninsula, which at the time was still part of Austria-Hungary - and yet he managed to make a name for himself across the borders of national identities, especially with his operas. Among his greatest successes was Nozze istriane ('Istrian Wedding'), which premiered in Trieste on 28 March 1895 - a rural love tragedy with words by the famous poet Luigi Illica and music by the composer, whose rich melodies skilfully avoid the obvious verismo. A pair of lovers are not allowed to marry because the son of a rich man desires the girl; the young woman is deceitfully persuaded that her sweetheart has abandoned her; when the lie comes to light at the end, it is too late. A stab of a knife ends their happiness!

Anyone who has survived the cursed seventh year may hope for a rosy future. The Orelon Trio, founded in Cologne in 2018, has just crossed this significant threshold-though it's members Judith Stapf, Arnau Rovira i Bascompte, and Marco Sanna never had to find their footing together: within a short time, these "meteoric risers" made a name for themselves, quickly guest-performing at renowned venues; high-caliber competition successes followed naturally (ARD, Melbourne, Graz), their first recordings and enthusiastic response from professional circles were not long in coming. How could it be otherwise, when the three musicians' "oreloj" (Esperanto for: ears) are so excellently attuned that they can perceive unheard-of things even in familiar repertoire. This first cpo release by the Orelon Trio leaves no doubt about that.

Hardly any Russian composers in the 19th century who helped develop the national Romantic musical language were able to make a living from their artistic activities. They were civil servants, officers, professors of chemistry or even master builders such as Victor Ewald (1860-1935), to whom composition was purely a hobby. He hardly wrote a dozen works during the course of his life. Among these are four quintets for brass instruments, which were among the most original publications of their time. It is unmistakably Russian in every melodic nook and cranny. Three of them can be heard on this recording by the highly virtuosic Italian Gomalan Brass Quintet, who also interpret the 1970 quintet by Alexander Tcherepnin (1899-1977) - an effervescent and clever homage to an unforgotten homeland.

After completing his Goyescas, the pianist and composer Enrique Granados wrote that he had happily succeeded in "writing something significant". And who would want to contradict him? The six scenes, some of them very extensive, are based on drawings by the great Spanish artist Francisco Jose de Goya. They form a cycle that is glowing with inspiration from the first to the last bar, and whose technical difficulties achieve the kind of transcendence that Franz Liszt in particular had achieved in the 19th century. His technical prowess is entirely devoted to picturesque and highly emotional expression, from humorous whimsy to the most grave of tragedies. The young Dina Stojilkovic has recorded Goyescas for cpo on a Steinway B built in 1895, an instrument that Granados might well have had under his virtuoso fingers at the time.

Despite his many successes, Antonin Dvorak always claimed to have remained a "simple Bohemian musician" - a self-description that, ironically, has made it harder for posterity to appreciate the breadth of his work fully.�This is particularly evident in the realm of chamber music, a field Dvorak explored even more extensively than his mentor, Johannes Brahms. With more than a dozen string quartets alone, alongside various other smaller and larger formats, Dvorak's body of work offers a broad spectrum, where the so-called "Slavic" tones are by no means always the dominant voice.�With this fifth double album, the Hagen Quartet concludes it's acclaimed complete recording, which spans the fascinating range from Dvorak's early grapplings with Wagner and Liszt to his later reflections on the "New World", revealing unexpected depths behind the face of the "humble musician".

The present edition contains the complete productions released by cpo between 1993 and 2018 on the subject of Michael Haydn's symphonies and wind concertos. During the course of a quarter of a century, as might well be imagined, a wealth of material accumulated that could not be put to renewed use without considerable cuts. Nine authors had contributed information about the sources and special qualities of the music to the original releases, which necessarily led to duplications, repetitions, and other redundancies that were to be avoided in the compilation. Moreover, it took some time for the numbering system currently in use for the works to be implemented. The authors initially continued to refer exclusively to the �Thematisches Verzeichnis der Instrumentalwerke von Michael Haydn� (to which we have assigned the letter P) that Lothar Perger had presented in the Denkmaler der Tonkunst in osterreich (DTo). The �enumeration� by the American musicologist Charles H. Sherman (1929-2018) later began to Appear in the booklets. Sherman initially compiled a provisional catalogue and then in 1993 published Johann Michael Haydn: A Chronological Thematic Catalogue of his Works in collaboration with T. Donley Thomas. This chronological listing (MH) and the P numbers, which soon will be 120 years old, are used whenever possible for the identification of the works recorded here. Our wish is that this unique edition may bring you great pleasure.

When musicological research fails from the outset because it finds the deed but not the slightest clue as to the perpetrator, then we have to surrender completely to the listening experience and forget the unknowns. This is also the case with Missa solennis, which a certain Ioannes Cuisean composed for the people of Cologne as commissioned for the Feast of St. Gereon in 1663. Did the composer have something to do with the Strasbourg Cathedral because the only copy of the work survived there? No one knows. This has motivated the Cologne-based Josquin Capella, which celebrates it's 30th anniversary in 2024, to make a grand event of this piece, which is as enigmatic as it is beautiful. Framed and interspersed with organ pieces by his - anything but unknown - contemporary Johann Jacob Froberger (1616-1667), a liturgy of magnificent sound is created with no need for further "research".

Whether it be buffa, giocosa, semi-seria or seria – without a quantum of love's troubles, baroque and classical opera would be in poor shape. Arias of desperation, heart-wrenching entreaties, scenes of jealousy and webs of intrigue are all part of the iron-clad stock of effective staged works – whatever class of society the protagonists belonged to. The noble emperor, who ultimately grants a pardon to the evildoers, was just as little immune to emotional humiliation as the bubbly and flirtatious Colombinchen, who in the end refreshingly thumbs her nose at her unfaithful lover, while the audience gleefully slap their thighs. Soprano Stéphanie Varnerin, accompanied by the excellent instrumental ensemble L’Astrée, is the soloist in this new production dedicated to a colourful anthology of Turin's opera scene in the 18th century. Fourteen arias by nine once successful composers, whose works were performed or premiered at one of the two famous theatres in Turin (Regio and Carignano) are included in the program, where only one emotion is absent – boredom.

The German composer Georg Schumann (1866-1952) is already well represented in the cpo catalog, with two symphonies, several orchestral works, two chamber music productions, a lied recital, and a piano recital - a collection that offers an unrivaled overview of this significant composer's output. Now, this impressive catalog is enriched with Schumann's undisputed magnum opus: the oratorio�Ruth, for four soloists, choir, and orchestra, based on the eponymous book of the Old Testament. The premiere of this work on December 9, 1908, in Hamburg was a tremendous success, with enthusiasm spreading rapidly across the Atlantic to the United States.�Conceived, it seems, as an ethical counterpart to the decadent�Salome by Schumann's contemporary Richard Strauss, this "hymn to love" is now experiencing a glorious revival after nearly eight decades of neglect.
