Ribe Cathedral, in the Southwest of Denmark, is one of the few places in the world where the earliest Lutheran church music practice can be reconstructed. Thanks to the Danish hymn collector Hans Thomissøn (1532-73), music director at Ribe Cathedral School around 1560, a clearly shaped liturgy was equipped with the relevant music. In exemplary manner this recording reflects the elements that made up an early Lutheran feast-day service in Denmark, including a fashionable Mass cycle by the Flemish master Jacobus Clemens non Papa. This release is just in time for the 500th anniversary of Europe’s Reformation. Musica Ficta, established in 1996, specializes in early music, particularly medieval and renaissance music.

Heise, Weyse and Lange-Müller: Love Songs

Danish composer Nicolai Worsaae (b. 1980) himself claims a fundamental identification with the narrative form found in classical music. Nevertheless, he has in recent years moved father away from the lyrical and narrative and turned more sharply towards modernism. On this release you meet Worsaae in two works: For both 'Wesenheit ab Wesenheit' (2011) and 'WaWV' (2014) Worsaae found inspiration in poems by the German prisoner Jorg Meyer, who during the late 70's was confined to isolation in a Danish prison. Worsaae's father was prison chaplain and in this way met Meyer who was imprisoned for espionage for the GDR in Denmark. In total, Worsaae uses 13 short poems and not such a great many different sounds to create a musical universe able to express what it is like to be in solitary confinement.

Lightings

The music on this CD confirms the special position of the composer Jorgen Jersild (1913-2004) in Danish music. It is captivating chamber music written over a half-century during which the composer underwent great musical development, but at the same time persisted in his own personal style - from the early works from the 1930s and 1940s to the later string quartet showing US a courageous, mature composer seeking out new musical areas.

This album is a unique collaboration between the young Danish composer Kasper Rofelt and accordionist Bjarke Mogensen, to whom all works on this premiere recording were dedicated. From the intimate Nightsongs to the colorful Light Falling, this CD offers both solo and chamber works with a variety of musical characters and idioms. "Bjarke Mogensen is an astonishment on record. Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen is a composer fully capable of writing insistent, rhythmically marked music. This new CD centers on a tiny, striking dance motif that is taken on unpredictable detours off the beaten track. Hvidtfelt Nielsen has been a composer-in-residence with Randers Chamber Orchestra, whose conductor, David Riddell, leads the way here through devil-may-care dance, momentary idyll and dangerous diversions.

Axel Borup-J�rgensen (1924-1912) was a composer of details. Throughout his life he took a deep interest in sounds in all their complexity, fusing mixtures of rhythms, notes and timbres into totalities built up from minute details with perfectionist sensibility. However, even in his seemingly most fragmented works, the music is poetically grounded and Romantic in it's expressiveness. This world premiere recording of four key works by Borup-J�rgensen combines two leading Danish ensembles, �rhus Sinfonietta and Ars Nova Copenhagen.
