The Food of Love

Louis Glass was born in 1864. His childhood home was full of music. His father, Christian Henrik Glass, was a prominent and highly recognised music educator whose primary instrument was the piano, though he was also an organist. In 1877, he founded his own music conservatory, which focused on piano playing and soon gained a good reputation. The piano works of Louis Glass make up a significant part of his collected works. Aside from arrangements of orchestral works in different piano editions, the many two-handed piano pieces appear as either single movements or as part of collections. The collections of piano works include no fewer than 12 opus numbers with a total of 75 movements from Glass' entire output. This is the second volume in the complete series played by the young Danish pianist Jakob Alsgaard Bahr.

Previously unreleased broadcast recordings capture Thomas Jensen in Baroque and Classical-era repertoire new to his discography. Jensen makes a stylish Mozartian in these rhythmically sprung and cultivated concert performances, given by the DRSO in Copenhagen and on tour. They are joined by the Danish violinist Tutter Givskov for one of Mozart’s earliest masterpieces, the Violin Concerto No. 3 K216.

The first ever attempt to present the Brandenburg Concertos in accordance with Baroque tradition. The pioneering early Berlin recordings conducted with élan and elegance by Alois Melichar, a now nearly forgotten Austrian master. The set includes bonus tracks of the Third Brandenburg Concerto conducted by three legendary masters: Eugene Goossens, Wilhelm Furtwängler, and the Dane Georg Høeberg. All recordings from the collection of Claus Byrith and transferred using the best possible digital technology.

Significant new additions to the recorded catalogue of this most broad-minded of Danish conductors, working in the last two years of his life and featuring several composers of his own time who were writing in their own post-Nielsen styles. Hardly less novel is the wartime recording of Coates’s Knightsbridge March, never reissued since first appearing on 78s. Several other light-orchestral classics are complemented by spontaneous-sounding live Tchaikovsky in the hands of a little-known French violinist.

Thomas Jensen Legacy now at Vol. 20

There was no more unprejudiced or enthusiastic promoter of Danish music than Thomas Jensen. Twelve composers are featured here, in styles ranging from Romantic ballet to modernist oratorio. Nearly all the recordings are issued for the first time ever since they were originally broadcast. Taken together, they present a panoramic picture of Danish music in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Pieces and performances of exceptional historical interest, showing Thomas Jensen’s place at the centre of Danish musical culture in the 1950s and 60s. DRSO principals take starring roles in a pair of Nielsen concertos on CD1, which reaches an ecstatic climax in the composer’s early cantata in praise of love. CD2 presents a survey of Danish composers from the early-Romantic era to Jensen’s own time, including a symphony composed in the aftermath of the Second World War, and two pieces vividly depicting the passing of the seasons.

Last volume of Ravel

On a previous volume of this, the most complete survey of Ravel´s piano music ever recorded, Oleg Marshev “sails through thickets of tremolos and relentless arpeggios, yet remains attuned to the composer´s sensual harmonic language (Gramophone). The final volume brings the composer's oblique homages to the world of ancient régime Paris, in his dance suite after Couperin, and the Vienna of Schubert and Johanns Strauss in constrasting transformations of the waltz. Danish pianist Emil Gryesten is a graduate of the Sibelius Academy in Finland and the Como International Piano Academy in Italy, in addition to having studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in his native Denmark. His notable teachers include Niklas Sivelöv, Erik T. Tawaststjerna and Eero Heinonen, as well as his teacher at the Como International Piano Academu, Fou Ts'ong, Dmitri Bashkirov and Willaim Gran Naboré. He has received awards at a number of competitions of your pianists, including the First Prize at the Hamburg Steinway Conpetion. He has recorded an album with Schubert sonatas and the Liszt sonata for Danacord. His latest release are the three Grieg violin sonatas with Benedikte Damgaard received critical acclaim.

New recordings of songs and piano music performed by the Koppel family - Composer Herman David Koppel (19081998) was the leading composer of his generation and he was not only admired as composer, but also highly praised as a truly virtuosic and original pianist. This volume 7 in the ongoing Koppel series features his dramatic masterpiece, the biblical oratorio MOSES in a recording from the ?rst performance. New recordings sung by the grand child Thomas Koppel of songs plus the complete 50 short pieces for piano played by the brilliant Danish pianist Christina Bjørkøe. Composer Svend Nielsen was born in 1937 and studied musicology at the University of Copenhagen, while concurrently studying music theory and composition at The Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen with Vagn Holmboe, Finn Hø?ding and Per Nørgård. In the following three decades, until 1998, he was employed as assistant professor of music theory at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus. Few people like to be categorized, least of all artists, who often hate any notion that anything but free imagination might condition their creativity. But at his advanced age, Svend Nielsen still might have to accept being called the "lyricist" of contemporary Danish music, even though his musical life's work is considerably more varied than any such description might imply. On the other hand, he hardly found it inappropriate to be called a "songwriter" long before the term came into vogue. Now days it is most often used in the context of singer-song-writer, where one and the same artist is responsible for lyrics, music and singing, but Svend Nielsen has never himself written the poems he has set to music, let alone sung his songs before an audience. Had he been born a few generations later, this might not have been inconceivable...

Svend Simon Schultz (1913-1998) is one of the most remarkable Danish composers and as a conductor he made a significant contribution to Danish songs, not least during his 30 years as head of the Danish Radio Chamber Choir. He was constantly composing and wrote music for movies, chamber ensemble and especially for choir. Svend S. Schultz made a stamp on Danish choral music which is still beaming today. His songs are known by every Dane and his production probably one of the most encompassing of all Danish composers. This is the second CD of a project to record all his nearly 90 choral songs, all of them musically and technically on the highest possible level.

The highly acclaimed Piano Festival - Founded in 1987 the annual Rarities of Piano Music Festival in the North German town of Husum is a major event. His renown as an interpreter of Scandinavian composers has obscured Thomas Jensen’s excellence as a conductor of the central-European classics. On this collection of newly remastered recordings, most of them issued for the first time since their original broadcasts, he brings authority and a forthright pulse to bear on Haydn, Beethoven and Brahms, in excellent sound from the 1950s and 60s.
