In Spring 2019, the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists, led by John Eliot Gardiner, presented a critically-acclaimed European tour of Handel's opera 'Semele', including Alexandra Palace Theatre in London, where this live recording took place. Semele had not been performed by John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi ensembles since they originally recorded it in the 1980s and this recording gives listeners the chance to hear a fuller version of the work. A glamorous team of young soloists joins the Monteverdi ensembles to bring the story of Semele to life, including celebrated English soprano Louise Alder, who takes on the title role, with the young tenor Hugo Hymas portraying the amorous Jupiter.

Paul Dessau - Let's Hope For The Best, directed by Anne-Kathrin Peitz Paul Dessau (1894-1979) has been a violin prodigy, became Otto Klemperer's assistant and finally an accomplished conductor. He wrote operetta and film music - from mountain films with Leni Riefenstahl by director Arnold Fanck to Walt Disney's animated films. As a convinced communist, Paul Dessau settled over to the GDR in 1948. He worked with Bertolt Brecht as well as his fourth wife, the stage directing idol Ruth Berghaus, and had a significant influence on the socialist music scene and stage art. He became a GDR state composer who was mainly celebrated on the outside, but sharply criticized on the inside."Paul Dessau: Let's hope for the best" by Anne-Kathrin Peitz sketches an artist's life between conformity and repulsion, political idealism and musical individuality, in which the changeable German-German history of the 20th century is strikingly condensed as if under a burning glass. The film portrait consciously traces the contradictions in Dessau's character, life and work and embeds the man and his music in the historical context. The cinematic approach to the protagonist and his sound cosmos becomes a jigsaw puzzle, both literally and figuratively, whose individual - often disparate - pieces slowly come together to form an overall picture. Interview partners - from politician Gregor Gysi to former concert hall director Frank Schneider or the American jazz composer Jack Cooper as well as composer and pianist Steffen Schleiermacher - try to create a portrait of Paul Dessau not only with words, but actually by doing a puzzle.

It is a superb account, bursting at once with piety toward the spirit of this music and sheer irreverence toward it's execution (The New York Times on the recording of the Bach Partitas by Gidon Kremer) Gidon Kremer is one of the most headstrong and original artists in the music business and has been hailed once by Herbert von Karajan as the world's best violinist. His return to Johann Sebastian Bach's Partitas was a major event. Kremer's first recording of these works was released almost a quarter of a century ago, and he hadn't played the partitas in public for over twenty years until this 2002 recording. Those who have followed Gidon Kremer's artistic development over the past years will note how much his tone and articulation have changed. The new rendering displays Kremer's very personal sense of spontaneity and a readiness to take risks. In a very personal way, the film "Back to Bach" shows Gidon Kremer's most important encounters with Bach. It accompanies the famous violin virtuoso showing rehearsals, recording sessions and discussions with a few trusted confidants, as well as rare archival footage.

When Yojo Christen plays the piano, his eyes light up and you realise that for him there is nothing more beautiful, nothing more significant in this world. The love story between the pianist and music started early, because as soon as Yojo could walk, he was drawn to the fascinating black grand piano in his family's living room. Yojo was taught early on by his stepfather, the successful concert pianist and composer Franz Hummel. In his youth, Hummel himself was a student of the famous Mozarteum piano professor Hans Ehlers, who in turn was a grand-disciple of Franz Liszt through his studies with Moriz Rosenthal and placed great value on teaching his students all of Liszt's secrets and playing techniques. Yojo on this CD Recording "For this CD, I have chosen a musical composition that deviates from the usual conventions. George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue", a very original homage to early American jazz, is followed by a contemporary work. It is Franz Hummel's second piano concerto with the title, "War and Peace", to which he asked me to contribute the finale. From my composition IRINI (Peace), for which I won the second and audience prizes at the International Diabelli Composition Competition in Munich at the age of 18, I created an orchestral version especially for this purpose: the third movement of the piano concerto. In 2016, I premiered the work with the Regensburg Philharmonic under Tetsuro Ban, whose recording I may publish here with the orchestra's permission. The musicians masterfully realized the truly difficult score with great dedication and profound skill. As a third stylistic variant, I have given room to my desire for romanticism and recorded the four Impromptus op. 90 by Franz Schubert. I would like to present these natural, na�ve-philosophical gems, whose profound simplicity can move one to tears, to Schubert lovers as well as to the pop-trained ear.
