An excellent ragtime pianist and wonderful arranger, Claude Bolling invented crossover and composed many memorable film soundtracks. Today he’s an unavoidable figure in jazz history, with a big band that has been touring the world since 1956 with a hot swing that has made him an icon. He retired from the scene in 2014, but his hugely successful Big Band continues, with the Master watching over its destiny. The band is now led by Vincent Cordelette, whose initiative led to this album which he produced himself: all the titles are big band standards composed by Bolling, often played but never recorded until now. Classical guitar virtuoso Maximo Pujol from Argentina has been revisiting the ‘tango’ and ‘milonga’ genres since the Seventies. Recorded in 2006 for Acqua Records, and licensed to Fremeaux & Associes in 2010 during a visit to Argentina by Patrick Fremeaux & Claude Colombini, this retrospective of the composer’s works from 1979 to 2005 pays tribute to Buenos Aires. As a cosmopolitan seaport whose fertile soil has fostered world-music in a rich variety of forms, the contrasting colours and music of Buenos Aires originate in as many cultures – European, Amerindian,African… – as the nationalities in the population. Between popular music and classical, these pieces for two guitars recorded by world-famous guitarist Maria Isabel Siewers softly evoke the milongas and colourfulfacades of Argentina’s capital. Sephardic music of the late 15th century, in it's original form, consisted of secular songs about people's everyday lives: songs of love, travel, drinking, and the contemplation of nature. The music is often modal, with intertwining melodies that alternate ternary and binary rhythms, and repetitive, haunting tunes. This album by cellist Viviane Levy and guitarist Frederic Ben Attar offers a purely instrumental take on these traditional songs that emphasizes the rich colors and emotional power of the music.
