‘Poisson Nageur’ is today’s version of the famous trio which used to feature Eddy Louiss, Rene Thomas and Kenny Clarke, and this contemporary model makes full use of all the sound-potential in the magic ‘organ/guitar/drums’ formula, with Emmanuel Bex, Gerard Marais and Aldo Romano sending tremors through the earth as they play with fire and water. When these three musicians founded this group in the early Nineties, their music aroused so much enthusiasm that Francois Lacharme decided to produce a recording of it… It left a permanent trace: their feline groove, with phrases inspired as much by bop as by instrumental rock, plus their never-say-die attitude to playing, were all attributes announcing a freer aesthetic in the heart of French jazz. The universe of Karl Zero blends world music (Latin, mambo, Brazilian) and jazz (big band orchestration), deliciously vintage, mixing humor, poetry, and tenderness. He picked up a “Brazilian version of” water from the 1940s to the 1950s, new wave tunes, electro rap, and diverted timeless titles to make these arrangements. He sings in French, Russian, or Arabic, and has surrounded himself with Abd Al Malik, Arielle Dombasle or Daisy d’Errata, who find themselves in roles counter to Zero. Karl Zero united the fine flower of Parisian jazz with the legendary Ferber studio and entrusted the sumptuous arrangements and orchestra direction of the big band to Raphael Lemonnier. Making this even more special is the acoustic environment in which these songs were recorded. A truly remarkable juxtaposition of the old and the new.

French gypsy jazz guitarist Mayo Hubert is probably best known as the regular accompanist of Tchavolo Schmitt. What is less known, however, is that he is also a formidable soloist. Following on his 2004 album Swing Mayo, Hubert is back with a Caravan de Santino, an album full of red-hot playing and the very best of Manouche style. Hubert is joined by Francko Mehrstein on guitar, Gino Roman on bass and Laurent Maur on harmonica, an instrument not often heard in Gypsy jazz. This unusual line-up gives Mayo Hubert the opportunity to show not only his virtuoso technique but also the sureness of his melodic inspiration, with eleven original compositions which reach a resounding climax in the form of a little-known Django Reinhardt title on which he duets with his 13 year-old son.
