Olympe de Gouges is considered the first "feminist" in history. Marie Gouze, "bastard" from Montauban, calls herself Olympe de Gouges and will become a woman of letters in Paris. She imposed herself in an essentially male environment and campaigned through her plays and texts for the rights of women, children and the poorest. She is the first female voice to denounce the slavery of blacks and to link their cause to that of women. In short, she is a progressive who intends to take advantage of the French Revolution to defend her ideas. In 1791, she wrote and distributed the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and Citizen. However, like all women involved in the Revolution, she will remain a citizen without citizenship. For several decades, Olympe de Gouges has been rediscovered as one of the great women of history.

Fr�meaux & Associ�s, a historiographic reference label for jazz with Alain Gerber's Quintessence Collection, publishes as part of the "A history explained by" collection with the Presses Universitaires de France, a history of jazz told by Laurent Cugny, professor at Sorbonne University and former director of the ONJ (National Jazz Orchestra). In this book, he traces the history of this music born 120 years ago and which has continued to evolve in all it's dimensions- musical, social, cultural, political, and economic. After having studied it's prehistory (the history of jazz before jazz, between 1866 and 1900) and jazz before recording, Laurent Cugny endeavors to first extract a "main linear plot" by exposing the traditional chronological narrative of styles: new orleans, pre-swing, swing, bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, free jazz, jazz-rock, while recalling that certain major figures do not fit easily into this plot: Duke Ellington, Django Reinhardt or Charles Mingus in particular. After 1976, we can speak of a postmodern era of jazz, until today. Finally, vocal jazz is treated separately. In just over 4 hours, a global story, from slavery to the ECM label, from constantly renewed creation to it's tireless rereading of repertoire and universal language.

Romane is a leading light among Django Reinhardt’s heirs, and so he has his rightful place among the greatest guitarists in French jazz. With Johnny Hodges, the alto saxophone found itself in the hands of a goldsmith. As a member honoris causa of the Duke Ellington Orchestra from 1928 to 1970, Hodges’ delicate phrasing and incomparable talents as an improviser made him one of the most remarkable musicians in jazz history. In this previously unreleased live recording dating from 1961 he plays the great classics in Ellington’s material, titles he always incarnated with an incandescent grace. The Live in Paris collection by Michel Brillié allows listeners to hear previously-unreleased recordings (made at concerts and private- or radio-sessions) by the great 20th stars in jazz, rock & roll and song. These “live” takes, and the artists’ rapport with their audiences, gives these performances an additional soul and sensibility in counterpoint to the rigorous demands of studio recordings. Particular care was taken when restoring the sound of these tapes in order to meet modern standards while preserving the original colors of the period.
