The Messe basse represents Faur� at his most practical. Written in conjunction with the French composer and organist Andr� Messager (also at one time assistant to Widor at St Sulpice) during a holiday in Normandy in 1881, the Messe basse was composed for the modest forces of a local church. A setting of the motet O salutaris hostia and the Kyrie were Messager's contribution; the remaining movements of the Ordinary, without the Credo, were set by Faur�. When revising the score in 1906 Faur� adapted the violin and harmonium accompaniment for organ, at the same time excising the Gloria and replacing Messager's Kyrie with one of his own. The final version of the Messe basse is one of the few existing settings of the mass for female voices and organ. The youthful Cantique de Jean Racine dates from 1865 when Faur� was studying with Saint-Sa�ns at the Ecole Niedermeyer in Paris. The Cantique earned Faur� a premier prix in composition and is a testament to the young composer's melodic genius and to his penchant for rich textures. This recording is an attempt to move Faur�'s liturgical music from the concert hall to the church. In particular, the reconstruction of nineteenth-century French ecclesiastical pronunciation and the restoration of Faur�'s preferred phrasing are just two of the most useful elements in the search for the composer's intentions. To those familiar with the more expansive versions of Faur�'s Requiem there will inevitably be unfamiliar textures in this performance. This is followed by a Fileuse, the introduction to Act 3 where M�lisande is at her spinning wheel. The Sicilienne, introduction to the fountain scene of Act 2, is the one part of the suite Faur� composed some years earlier and scored himself for sextet. Finally, La mort de M�lisande (The Death of M�lisande) is an intense parallel to the heroine's music in the Pr�lude, portraying her Act 5 death scene. The Pavane was orchestrated at a later date and the original version for piano of this well-known piece shows that the simple archaic melody should be played at a faster speed than is the case with the orchestral or choral versions. The four Valses-caprices are not a cycle. The two earlier pieces were written in the early 1880s, the later pair a decade later. Although Saint-Sa�ns enjoyed Opp. 30 and 38. Their indebtedness to Chopin and their attempt at capriciousness does not suit Faur�'s introverted nature. The later pieces are more successful and. #despite retaining traces of the virtuoso style, are more introspective, nearer to the true nature of the composer. The Mazurka hints again at a tribute to Chopin, but shows no debts to Polish folk rhythms. It's presence is manifest in Robert Schumann's Romanzen fur Frauenstimmen (Meerfey,  Der Wassermann, In Meeres Mitten), and it recurs in the choices of numerous French composers (for example, in C. Debussy's  La Mer), a trait that clearly re-sonates in the fluid and elegant writing of Gabriel Faure featured here. Across it's surface, the  sea incarnates the spontaneity, luminosity, and immediacy of Faure's invention, while in it's depths resides the Schumannian  style, introspective and severe, directing it's gaze towards Reflection and the layering of Thought. With the Polimnia vocal ensemble,  I chose to work on a challenging project, far removed from easy transcriptions or more straightforward choral adaptations.   For all of us, it was like going out into the open sea, with no footholds or furrows of well-trodden routes. A treacherous  journey, devoid of certainties yet full of opportunities for a totally shared research into the meanings and sounds expressed  by the young performers already rich in their own time, ranging from 17 to 25 years of age. The fact that young is not an adjective  to be equated with superficial is the conviction I have matured in my long experience as director of the children's  choir from which the Polimnia Ensemble almost entirely originates. The result we have achieved is the impetus that moves us  towards new challenges, new future projects. A highly experienced and polished recording artist, Pr�tre had many years' experience of working in the studio. His discography was large.
