As one of the most respected liturgical composers of our time, Michael Joncas has earned his reputation by writing music for the Church that proclaims the Scriptures in song, fits the ritual moment, and speaks to the heart. This new collection will no doubt reaffirm his fine reputation and reestablish once again his valuable contribution to the art of pastoral music making. The rich, lyrical Joncas style is evident in the title song, "As the Deer," a beautiful setting of Psalm 42 usable as a responsorial or processional, scored for harp, winds, and strings. "Exultate Justi," "Cantate Domino," and "Wisdom Is Calling" are grand processionals, scored for brass and organ. There's also a lovely setting of the Francis Patrick Sullivan text "A Shepherd" for solo voice, and Joncas's ever-popular "Spirit of God within Me," with text by Timothy Dudley-Smith, is recorded with a full complement of instruments. Joncas's scholarly research and personal love of the Liturgy of the Hours has led him to compose a new setting of evening prayer entitled "St. Francis Evening Prayer." Composed in a classical style, this new and accessible setting should be explored by any community considering the Liturgy of the Hours.

This Very Morning

Jan 01, 1998
This profound collection fo Palm Sunday, Triduum, and Easter, deeply infused with the passion of the season, evolves from the worship in the parishes where Rory Cooney and Gary Daigle have served over the years. "Trumpet in the Morning," Rory Cooney's highly inspirational hymn for the millenium, is set to the haunting strains of an early-American melody. The text draws on jubilee imagery, especially from the book of Leviticus, but its point of view is distinctly modern. New hymns resound with the emotions of the season, including the solemn strains of Good Friday's "Precious Blood" and the truly uplifting title song, "This Very Morning." Also included is a new concertato arrangement of Suzanne Toolan's classic, "I Am the Bread of Life." Highlights of this collection include a stirring acclamation for baptism that has been expanded into a song for the sprinkling of the assembly. There is an upbeat "Litany of Saints" to accompany the baptismal procession to the font, appropriately based on "When the Saints Go Marchin' In" and incorporating the refrain from that enduring spiritual.

The Song of Mark

Jan 01, 1995
A sense of the inevitable weaves through the Gospel of Mark and it is evident too in The Song of Mark, but there is much more going on here than anticipation over coming events. This musical leads us to make the refreshing discovery again as well. This memory reclaimed is the gift of true hope that Jesus provides the downtrodden and forsaken—the strength of God that is made perfect in weakness. Through Jesus, the nameless are given a voice that is heard. True to Mark's telling, the anonymous women storytellers in the chorus of The Song of Mark bear out a great understanding of what true discipleship means, greater even than the Apostles. At the end of the piece, in "The Song at the Empty Tomb," these voice of the faithful rise with Jesus and resonate the Good News.

This major endeavor from David Haas includes an innovative new Mass setting—the first complete Mass he has written in five years—drawn from the musical motifs of his top-selling new communion song, "We Give You Thanks." David covers important musical ground with this project. In addition to the usual ritual moments set to music (the Kyrie, Gloria, gospel and eucharistic acclamations, Lord's Prayer, and Lamb of God), this project includes music for the dismissal of children and for children's Liturgy of the Word.
