Two-time Grammy Award-winning singer Sylvia McNair and celebrated pianist Kevin Cole in a collection that is a must for lovers of theater music: 15 songs — 13 of them in first recordings — by the great Harold Arlen (composer of “Over the Rainbow,” “Stormy Weather,” “The Man That Got Away") and lyricist Martin Charnin (the hit musical “Annie”). Cy Coleman, composer, jazz pianist and five-time Tony Award winner was one of the most successful Broadway composers in the latter half of the 20th c. His shows include such smash hits as Sweet Charity, Barnum, Little Me, City of Angels and Seesaw. Coleman was the only composer in Broadway history to win consecutive Tony Awards for Best Score at the same time that the corresponding musicals won for Best Musicals. Now, for the first time on CD, Coleman performs 28 songs from Broadway, Off-Broadway and even those that never opened. This CD spans the entire length of Coleman's career with hits like "Hey, Look Me Over" and "I've Got Your Number" to previously unheard numbers like the humorous "The Laarge Daark Aardvark Song" written with humorist Allan Sherman. Continuing with Harbinger Records’ acclaimed series of albums devoted to jazz pianist, composer, Broadway songwriter, and black music pioneer Eubie Blake, we proudly present the original demo to the proposed Broadway musical ‘Shuffle Along of 1950.’ Harbinger’s recording of Sissle and Blake singing the score to the original production of ‘Shuffle Along’ won the Grammy Award for its brilliant liner notes by Richard Carlin and Ken Bloom, authors of an upcoming biography of Eubie Blake to be published by Oxford University Press. They are repeating their assignment for this recording. Also included is a bonus track featuring remastering of the only surviving acetate of a historical “Salute to Ruth King.” Ruth King was a famous Cleveland DJ who celebrated black musicians. And such notables as Sissle and Blake and the legendary WC Handy, composer of St. Louis Blues, play for Ms. King. Several songs from the original ‘Shuffle Along’ are included as are new songs written especially for this production. Later, other musicians augmented the score, and these songs are also included in this rare recording.

In this historic release, the great lyricist of Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Fiorello! shares with musical theater fans 53 of his "hidden treasures" - rarely heard songs from 17 musicals, with many songs performed by Harnick himself and his late composer-partner Jerry Bock.

Three cuts feature Harnick as recorded just last year for this special collection, and other archival recordings star three-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald, Brian d'Arcy James, Hugh Martin, Charlotte Rae, and more. This 2-CD set is a grand celebration of Harnick's 90th birthday on April 30th and the 50th anniversary of Fiddler on the Roof. That musical's iconic "Sunrise, Sunset" is being released for the first time in its original demo recording by Bock and Harnick.

The deluxe package includes a 60-page booklet with extensive notes by Harnick and a foreword by famed Broadway producer Harold Prince, who comments: “This magnificent set is testimony to Sheldon’s extraordinary gifts, and to his place in the pantheon of Broadway musical creators.”

Going to the movies has been a popular pastime since the turn of the last century. In an era without television or radio the theatre and the parlor piano were the entertainment options for a family. As silent movies grew in popularity it was a sure thing that Tin Pan Alley would jump on the bandwagon and write topical songs about going to the movies as well as songs written for the silent movies’ scores played on everything from a single piano to a theatre organ to a full orchestra. Popular songs on the subject of moving pictures were an international phenomenon from about 1900 through the coming of sound in the late 1920s, and constitute a body of work that has yet to be fully documented and examined. Their lyrics offer amusing evidence of contemporary attitudes toward the cinema; and in their published form, as sheet music and recordings, these songs are among the earliest forms of motion picture merchandising and exploitation. Now, for the first time, these early recordings are saved from obscurity giving us a window into a world long disappeared. These twenty-six recordings feature every variety of instrumentation and feature top bands and vocalists of the era.

Considered one of Broadway’s most important composers in the post 1950s era, and still active today nearing 90 years old, John Kander is responsible for the music to such acclaimed shows as Cabaret, Chicago, and Kiss of the Spider Woman to name just a few.
