In their new release Tango Fado Duo, guitarist Pedro H. da Silva and bandoneonist Daniel Binelli explore the relationship between the sensuality of Argentine tango and the passion of Portuguese fado, interweaving the traditional sounds of their respective instruments. Although tango and fado originate from two distant countries and differ in rhythm and instrumentation, they are closely related in harmony, melody, and lyrical themes. Internationally renowned composer, arranger and master of the bandoneon, Argentine musician Daniel Binelli tours extensively in concert and recital. Binelli is also widely acclaimed as the foremost exponent of the music of Astor Piazzolla. Binelli is the Musical Director of the Tango Metropolis Company, which was featured in the PBS documentary Tango: The Spirit of Argentina and in a BBC documentary on Astor Piazzolla's life. Pedro H. da Silva is an award-winning composer, guitarist, educator, and multi-instrumentalist whose umerous accolades include the 2015 ASCAP Plus Award. A professor of composition and classical guitar at New York University, da Silva is the Music Director of the Manhattan Camerata, which he co-founded with his wife, the composer and pianist Luc�a Caruso.

Astor Piazzolla’s much-loved tangos have been arranged for all manner of instrumental line-ups, this album presenting an exuberant selection specially arranged for the acclaimed Tuscan Brass and Percussion Quintet whose members are professors of their instruments in leading Italian conservatories. The Quintet is joined by guest violinist Andrea Tacchi. The result is a thrilling new take on nuevo tango, passionate yet poised, sharp and shiny as a knife-blade. The centrepiece of this album, Piazzolla’s witty Four Seasons Suite takes Vivaldi’s famous violin concertos for a stroll through the docklands of Buenos Aires, the original home of tango itself.

Lorin Maazel (1930–2014) was perhaps the most interesting musician of his time. The very number of his engagements as Principal Conductor made him exceptional. After studying piano, violin, harmony, counterpoint and composition, and making his first appearances as a youthful conductor in the USA, where his family had moved from France in 1932, he played the violin in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and studied philosophy, economics, literature, French and Russian in his spare time. He went to Italy on a scholarship in the early 1950s, was repeatedly engaged – often by broadcasting stations – as a conductor, was the first American and at the same time the youngest conductor at the Bayreuth Festival when he conducted Lohengrin there in 1960, made his BBC concert debut with Mahler’s Second Symphony in London and directed the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin as its Principal Conductor (1964-75), was appointed General Music Director of the city’s Deutsche Oper (1965-71), then headed the Cleveland Orchestra (1972-82), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (1988-96), Orchestre National de France (1988-90) and finally from 1993 the Symphony Orchestra of Bavarian Radio. He made his New York Met debut with Don Giovanni (1962) and debuted at the Salzburg Festival with The Marriage of Figaro (1963). He made a memorable appearance in London in 1988 when in a single day he performed all nine Beethoven symphonies with three different orchestras in aid of charity.

Sensitive Skin, the new album from award-winning Finnish accordionist, composer and adventurist Kimmo Pohjonen, on Ondine's Octopus label, follows his successful Uniko (ODE 1185-2) that featured the Kronos Quartet and Samuli Kosminen. Pohjonen's new compositions explore dynamic, fresh sonic territory with, once again, the Kronos Quartet, amongst many more special guests from the world of Finnish music. Recipient of the Pro Finlandia Medal in 2012 and a nominee for the Nordic Council's Music Prize in 2013, Mr. Pohjonen continues to perform in numerous festivals, including those that feature world music, rock and classical music. Soundbreaker, the documentary film about Kimmo Pohjonen directed by Kimmo Koskela, premiered in 2012 and has been shown in over thirty countries.

Karimi, master of singing, drew on the most authentic source of the radif (classical repertoire) to create an intimate expression far removed from any artifice, in perfect harmony with Mohammad Musavi's ney flute -a simple reed with immense power. This is how Karimi illustrates the mode in which he has chosen to sing: "Nav� has a special beauty of it's own. A mode with a sweetness, finesse and subtlety that plunges the listener into a state of meditation. Cheo Hurtado, virtuoso of the cuatro and bandola guayanesa, presents part of the vast traditional Venezuelan repertoire, mainly derived from pre-baroque and baroque Hispanic music: melodic richness and rhythmic vigour. Cheo Hurtado (born Asdr�bal Jos� Hurtado on 2 May 1960 in Ciudad Bol�var, Venezuela) is one of the most celebrated virtuoso performers of the cuatro, a small four-stringed instrument central to Venezuelan folk tradition. The Spanish conquest reached Venezuela fairly early. Christopher Columbus had already landed near the Orinoco delta by his third journey, in 1498. As it was near to Santo Domingo and Cuba, which were the gates to all contact with the homeland, Venezuela was exposed to a good deal of musical input from Baroque Europe. In addition to church and secular art music, Spanish popular music forms were also introduced throughout the continent of South America. These musical forms may have already gained African and American influences while in Spain. In the course of time, they turned into traditional music. Cheo Hurtado learned to play the cuatro with his father, performed at an early age as a soloist, and was awarded several prizes. He has played with various groups, including Guruf�o (one of the most popular bands in Venezuela). He also plays the bandola llanera, mandolina, and the Cuban tres.

Boubacar Traore carries within him all the beauty of African blues. A diamond among the jewels of Mandingo music, he shines with the dark glow of exceptional purity. Only the voice of "Kar Kar" (a footballing nickname meaning "The Dribbler" given him by his friends, who also love the beautiful game) can blend Niger and Mississippi river alluvia with such moving authenticity. His unique, inimitable, self-taught guitar technique owes a great deal to his kora influences, but it's shades and phrasing also suggest the great black bluesmen of the deep South: Blind Willie McTell, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and others. Back in the 60s when the euphoria of African independence reigned, the 20-year-old Boubacar Traore was Mali's Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley. He was the first to play Mandingo-based music on electric guitar, long before his junior, Ali Farka Touré. It is in the United States, in Lafayette Louisiana, that Boubacar Traore wished to record his third album for the label Lusafrica. The guitarist's intention was to change the coloration of his songs (old numbers like "Dounia Tabolo" ou "Kanou", and new ones, "Ben de Kadi", "Mousso") while conserving their original character. So it is with musicians from the Southern States of the USA he had met on tour, Cedric Watson on violin and washboard, and Corey Harris on guitar, that he undertaked the recording of his album "Dounia Tabolo" at the end of 2016. And when he told them he wanted to add a cello and female voice to the album, Cedric Watson suggested Leyla McCalla. This recording is a new milestone in the work of this extraordinary but modest artist. From blues to folk and Cajun to Zydeco music, his new traveling companions have provided a touch of folly and swing (Cedric Watson), blues depth (Corey Harris) and discreet elegance (Leyla McCalla). More than ever, Boubacar Traore has shown himself to be the living, vital connection between Mali and the Mississippi.
