In March 2011 when the 2-CD set '75 Glenn Miller Masterpieces' (SEPIA1165) was created by combining a keepsake album of some of his finest broadcast performances, 'For the Very First Time', with a dozen choice tracks from two landmark "Limited Edition" anthologies, fans were delighted. Now, in response to requests from around the world, Sepia happily gathers the remaining 80 wonderful air checks from both "Limited Edition" sets for this new 3 CD package. This fabulous collection, lovingly presented in remastered sound and with original artwork and other archival images, adds the production history and little-known trivia about the "Limited Edition" albums, plus a discography which corrects many names, dates, or other details.

This CD combines the 1962 LP 'Teresa Brewer's Greatest Hits', an album of stereo re-recordings of her Top Ten hits from the 1950s, and 'Don't Mess with Tess', an album of standards, all on CD for the first time. Teresa Brewer was a popular artist of the 1950s and 1960s who sold millions of records. Of the eight Top Ten hits Teresa scored in the 1950s including two chart-toppers ("Music, Music, Music" and "Till I Waltz Again with You") all were recorded in mono. She re-recorded seven in stereo for her "Greatest Hits" album in 1962 and amazingly that album has never been on CD until now. Also featured on this CD is 'Don't Mess with Tess', another stereo album making it's CD debut in which Teresa sings standards. Four bonus tracks from singles have been added and are all re-mastered and in stereo.

Even a hundred years after his birth, Charles Mingus is still labelled as an artistic genius and the "angry man" of jazz, an uncompromising fighter against racial segregation and for unconditional truthfulness in his music, but who was also mentally unstable, could not control his emotions and often became violent enough in his anger. This image is confirmed by the circumstances of the world premiere of Mingus' "opus magnum", the two-hour suite "Epitaph" on 12 October 1962 in New York's Town Hall, which has long since become a myth in jazz history. Due to the short notice and rehearsal period, the performance itself fell short of the composer's artistic standards. As a result, Mingus asked the audience to leave the hall during the interval and offered to refund their entrance fee, which led to riots in the street outside the concert hall and ultimately forced the police to intervene. After that, Charles Mingus abandoned the attempt to realize "Epitaph" and it was not until the mid-1980s, after the musicologist Andrew Homzy discovered the music notes of the piece in Mingus' estate and, together with Gunther Schuller reconstructed it, that this masterpiece was premired in 1989. At the finale of the "Musikfest Berlin" 2022, the musicians of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and their BigBand performed "Epitaph" as a tribute to the 100th birthday of Charles Mingus. Under the energetic baton of Titus Engel, the musicians of the BigBand and the Orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Jazzinstitut Berlin explore the realms of expression of dark threat, profound songfulness, conflict and ecstasy with irrepressible joy of playing and remarkable clarity. Star trumpeter Randy Brecker let's his wonderfully clear tone clear tone soar to the highest heights.

'Don Cherry, more than any other artist in the jazz of his era, pioneered the music's internationalist nature that has now come to be commonly accepted as an integral part of it's character. The individuality of Cherry's contribution to the history of jazz has often been unfairly obscured by his admittedly important association with the music of Ornette Coleman. While the (pocket) trumpeter's position as Coleman's front line partner in the altoist's first revolutionary quartet was indeed a major one, Cherry's role as one of the founders of the genre that is known today as 'world music' is equally significant. - Russ Musto Featured Artists Don Cherry-trumpet Gato Barbieri-sax Karl Berger-vibes Aldo Romano-drums Bo Steif-bass.

In 1972, thirteen years after her death, Congress extended copyright protections to include recorded musical performances. Billie Holiday would have benefited greatly from such protection: during the more than twenty-five years of her career, Holiday gave an unknown number of live performances on TV & Radio and in clubs & concert halls, many of which were recorded both officially and unofficially by sound engineers, fellow musicians and fans. Today, ESP-Disck, which for many years has been assembling unofficial recordings of several artists from before 1972, has released one of the most comprehensive collections of live Billie Holiday recordings to date, some previously available but most not. These recordings, laid out in chronological order, not only demonstrate the arc of Holiday's development as a vocalist but give a rare behind-the-scenes look into how the singer approached her musicians and her audience. The first disc of this compilation opens with a twenty-year-old Billie Holiday performing with Duke Ellington in 1935, followed by a radio broadcast from the Savoy Hotel in New York two years later in which Holiday fronts the Count Basie Orchestra. The next four discs cover Holiday's career from 1949 to her death in 1959.

\'Released in the early \'90s, Concert for the Comet Kohoutek captures a typically inspired night by Sun Ra & the Intergalactic Space Research Arkestra. Recorded in late 1973, on this date the Arkestra is guided by a musical theme composed around the idea of the Comet Kohoutek, which was passing close to Earth at the time. Typically, the release vaults between cosmic vocal songs that speak of Truth and other such brashly capitalized affairs (such as \'Astro Black\'), almost straight-ahead big-band jazz arrangements (\'Variations of Kohoutek Themes\'), and frighteningly evil free explorations (\'Journey Through the Outer Darkness\').\'-Jesse Jarnow, AMG Digitally remastered by Joe Phillips with brief liner notes by ESP label founder Bernard Stollman.\' Recorded live at Town Hall, NYC, on December 22, 1973.

In 1966, the late Steve Lacy visited the new ESP-DISK office at 156 5th avenue with a master tape of his concert in Buenos Aires with his quartet, Louis Moholo, Enrico Rava and Johnny Dyani. He offered to sell the master for what I thought was an exorbitant price. I bought it. This LP was released featuring a reproduction of a painting by his friend, the late Bob Thompson, who had died before obtaining recognition. In 1992, the master tape was brought to engineer Ken Robertson at the Sony Studio, who observed that it had been recorded out of phase, and he corrected the phasing. - Bernard Stollman Digitally remastered from the original tapes Featured Artists Steve Lacy: soprano saxophone Enrico Rava: trumpet Johnny Dyani: bass Louis T. Moholo: drums.

\'Milford Graves has been among the flashiest drummers in the free mode, known for skillful inclusion of Asian and African rhythmic ingredients into his solos.\' - Ron Wynn / Percussionist Milford Graves recorded his first and only ESP-Disk recording on August 5th, 1966 along with fellow percussionist, the late Sonny Morgan. According to Milford Graves, the track titles were given numbers according to how many beats were in each measure. This unique combination of percussion conversations between Graves and Morgan is a welcomed addition in ESP\'-Disk\'s new series of digipak re-issues. Digitally remastered.

From the original liner notes: "This recording is made of an assembly of estranging electronic sound effects, trite sports commentaries and the music of a beautifully improvising jazz trio. Bob James has, through this convulsion of out-of-context sound elements and music of a trio, tried to emphasize the strange acoustic complex of modern man in his city, in his world, in his cosmos". Features Bob James on piano, Barre Philips on bass, and Robert Pozar on percussion.

(2-CD set) a prolific writer and arranger, Canadian clarinetist Phil Nimmons has never received due praise from the international jazz community. His heavy involvement in jazz education (he has been on the Univ. Of Toronto faculty since 1973) has allowed him to act as mentor for many of Canada's jazz writers and arrangers. The material on this CD comes from broadcasts and transcriptions recorded in Toronto from 1959-64 by the Canadian Broadcasting System. The sessions initially took place at the McGill Street Studio and were then moved the Carlton Studio, and most were recorded in front of an audience. Features Jerry Toth, Bernie Piltch, Roy Smith, Rick Wilkins, Eddie Karam, Jack Taylor, Erich Traugott, Ross Cully and others.
