For his fourth disc for Criss Cross, drummer/leader Ralph Peterson has reconstituted the Fo'tet, his critically acclaimed forward-looking quartet featuring vibraphonist Bryan Carrott. Founding member clarinetist Don Byron returns after a nearly 15 years hiatus to revisit the group's truly unique, original sound. Percussionist Eguie Castillo augments the band to help it fuse Latin rhythms into the mix, including a Puerto Rican plena arrangement of Joe Henderson's "Shade of Jade" and a Brazilian samba flavored reworking of the leader's "Keep it Simple." Joined by an ensemble of youngsters (Jeremy Pelt, Jimmy Greene, Orrin Evans & Eric Revis) whose ability to dip into the tradition & move forward equips them to navigate the primal complexities of Peterson's sonic landscape, Peterson offers his swingingest date in years.

The Best Of The MPS Years presents you all the classics and highlights of Osacr Peterson's time at the Black Forest label on one album. It was 1961 when Oscar Peterson came to Villingen, Germany the first time. Hans-Georg Brunner-Schwer, former owner of the hifi dynasty SABA, had just set up the first version of his studio, equipped with the most advanced recording technology of the time. This was the bait used by the piano enthusiast to attract the famous pianist to the Black Forest. After a performance in Zurich, Peterson climbed into a limousine and embarked on a journey across the mountains. As soon as he arrived, along with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen, the international star was led to the Steinway grand in the living-room where a number of excited guests were eagerly waiting. "I listened to him play 'til four o'clock in the morning and lost the desire to ever hear the Beatles again!", says Matthias Brunner-Schwer, HGBS' son, still starry-eyed half a century later. The legendary pianist himself was equally delighted when he listened to the recording of the nocturnal living-room performance, never before having heard such a direct and pristine piano sound on tape. Peterson's enthusiastic response marked the beginning of a long-term friendship and spiritual kinship with Brunner-Schwer. In the following years, the Canadian pianist returned again and again with various line-ups to capture his musical vision on tape. The legendary "Exclusively For My Friends" live series was the very first release for Brunner-Schwer's newly-established MPS label with many studio albums to follow.

The beauty of Oscar Peterson's sound has never been as superbly captured as this. (Jazz critic Gene Lees in the original liner notes) - When the world-renowned Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson came to Villingen in 1961, there was a mood of intense excitement all round. Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer (HGBS), former owner of the hifi dynasty SABA, had just set up the first version of his studio, equipped with the most advanced recording technology of the time, above the living-room in his villa. This was the bait used by the piano enthusiast to attract the famous pianist to the Black Forest. After a guest performance in Zurich, Peterson climbed into a limousine and embarked on a journey across the mountains. As soon as he arrived, along with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen, the international star was led to the Steinway grand in the living-room where several excited guests were eagerly waiting. - In the following years, the Canadian pianist returned again and again to the Black Forest with various line-ups to capture his musical vision on tape. As Peterson was still under contract to Verve, the recordings could not be released before 1968. The legendary Exclusively For My Friends series was the first release for Brunner-Schwer's newly-established MPS label. - Never before had a recording captured every aspect of Peterson's ground-breaking sound so vividly: the virtuosity and the speed as well as the delicate inspiration he brings to the subtle and reflective moments. These recordings, made over a short period of five years, also reflect the transformation from equal member of a trio to soloist. All albums beside "Mellow Mood" and "Travelin' On" were released in 1968, with those two being released in 1969. - This will be the first time MPS reissues all the recordings from the "Exclusively For My Friends" series as standalones. All editions will have a scan of the mastertapebox and the original linernotes included.

Recorded in 1970 in the legendary MPS studio, Another Day features the lesser-known trio constellation of Oscar Peterson himself on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Ray Price on drums. While Peterson, who was 45, was still at the peak of his powers and world famous in 1970, the new members of his trio were virtually unknown to his fans of the period. But especially bassist Mraz would soon grow popular himself, appear on over 200 sessions including around 20 as a leader and his endless resume included associations with Stan Getz, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, Bill Evans, Tommy Flanagan, Joe Henderson and countless others. The Peterson-Mraz-Price trio lasted for about a year, recording this album as well as the famous Walking The Line. - .Another Day has plenty of highlights, one surely being "All The Things You Are", which is one of Peterson's most streamed tracks. The performances show that this overlooked version of the Oscar Peterson Trio could hold it's own with it's more famous predecessors. - Remastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Christoph Stickel, this release offers an intensive look into the trios' dynamic, inviting enthusiasts to finally Peterson album Another Day is an album by jazz pianist and composer Oscar Peterson, originally released in 1970.

Throughout his decades-long career, Oscar Peterson accomplished the near impossible: greatness with every note played and the acquisition of new generations of fans worldwide, regardless of the obstacles life threw at him. In 1994, only one year after suffering a stroke that rendered his left hand weakened, Peterson took the stage in Munich to prove to his collaborators, fans, and himself, that his earned title of "Maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington still rang true. By reinventing his playing style at 68 years old, he demonstrated his undiminished inventive prowess with an all-star band including Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass), Lorne Lofsky (guitar) and Martin Drew (drums).

Oscar Peterson's trio with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen is widely regarded as Peterson's "classic trio," considered by fans as the most popular and in-demand of his long and storied career (featured on releases such as 1963's Night Train and 1964's We Get Requests). Recorded during their creative peak in 1964 (5 years into their collaboration), this previously unheard and unreleased live performance is destined to become a fan favorite from the Oscar Peterson vaults. In his memoir Peterson reflects on the dedication that Ray and Ed brought to the group: "In addition to our trio rehearsals, therefore, Ray would call his own rehearsals in his or Ed's room and they would simply practice 'time.' They created a flexible and multi-faceted rhythmical language that they could apply to any musical statement I might make and enhance any direction I might choose. In short, they practiced 'all the possibles.'" - Oscar Peterson
