The Art of Fugue is Bach's final composition and one of his most challenging. In this album Phantasm and it's director Laurence Dreyfus showcase all the hidden beauties of the composer's magnum opus, arguably the pinnacle of the fugue genre. Printed in open score, the format allows a rendition on viols, as recorded here. Brimming with rich counterpoint and dynamic conversation among the parts, the work can legitimately claim a place within the consort repertoire. Bach manages to paint a finely delineated set of contrasting musical portraits full of revelations and surprises. Far from an academic encyclopaedia of arcane musical techniques, The Art of Fugue thus embarks on a (unfinished) voyage of discovery shared by an inveterate explorer whose thirst for invention knows no bounds. Organist Daniel Hyde performs four movements in this welcome follow-up to Phantasm's acclaimed Well-Tempered Consort series.

Not that every item here can be said to be fully familiar, even to the regular concert-goer, but taken as a whole this programme affords a conspectus of Liszt in various guises: the master of original large-scale form alongside smaller, transcribed gems; the arch-Romantic who understood the music of his great predecessors better than any of his contemporaries, one whose own original music - for all it's powerful empfindsamkeit - was initially firmly rooted in the precepts of the classical masters.

The nyckelharpa, a bowed instrument, with keys, sympathetic and drone strings, dating from the 14th century at least, in songs and instrumental pieces (scored also for violin, viola and quinton d'amore) -a rich, remarkable timbre still at the heart of Sweden's musical tradition. The nyckelharpa (which resembles a violin with a keyboard of wooden keys), once widespread throughout northern Europe, has seen it's range shrink as music has evolved, surviving only where it has been able to adapt. In Sweden, from the early 20th century onwards, traditional musicians, who until then had been confined to playing solo in a small area around their homes, began to meet up at folk events, spurred on by the Romantic wave sweeping across Europe. They were then confronted with other practices, other tonalities and other repertoires. Even today, the nyckelharpa is still incredibly adaptable. Different research undertaken by instrument-makers and musicians are enlarging it's sound range, and opening it up to classical or contemporary repertoire, to jazz and ancient music.

Multi-part music�for the same instrument, dating back to Elizabethan consorts of viols,�remains outside the typical orchestral repertoire nowadays, but�as ever, SOMM remains true to�it's stellar reputation for presenting rare and singular releases.�Habanera, Music for Eight Cellos and Voice�is�a joyous recording that�grew�out of a collaboration�between baritone�Roderick Williams�and cellist�Joely Koos, joint Artistic Directors at the 2023 Endellion Summer Music Festival.�The camaraderie enjoyed by the artists and the�Endellion Cellists�was particularly strong, and a special concert was devised for cello ensemble and voice featuring British-Spanish soprano Ana Beard Fernandez.� Now, SOMM presents the formidable Endellion Cellists, soprano Ana Beard Fernandez, and baritone Roderick Williams in a recording of these two artists' uniquely colourful arrangements. The musicians are led by award-winning choral, orchestral, and operatic�conductor William Vann. As an added bonus, Roderick Williams plays eighth cello, and recorder-player Iain Hall joins the artists for this recital of shared pleasure and a sense of fun that is palpable. The programme opens with the most famous original composition for cello ensemble: Bachianas Brasilieras No. 5 for soprano solo and eight cellos. From the set of nine Bach-inspired Brazilian pieces by Heitor Villa-Lobos, it's two movements are a haunting A�ria and a Danc�a inspired by a Brazilian saudades song. When the Spanish composer and pianist Manuel de Falla was asked by a soprano for his advice about Spanish songs, he was inspired to arrange some himself. The result was Siete Canciones Populares based on seven folksongs from different parts of Spain, for which he composed wholly original accompaniment, here transcribed for eight cellos. The best-known works by Spanish composer Xavier Montsalvatge are born of his fascination for the music of the Antilles and West Indian music. His Cinco canciones Negras came out of this aesthetic, and are among the finest examples of late twentieth-century Spanish art-song. The individual songs that make up the second half of this recital include the haunting Vocalise-etude en forme de Habanera by Maurice Ravel, who was born in Basque country near the Spanish border. Three varied songs collected as Tres Canciones include I am madness by the seventeenth-century French composer Henri du Bailly; an anonymous song, So the Oak; and Black Shadow from Six Galician Ballads by the nineteenth-century Spanish composer Xoan Montes. Two twentieth-century Russian songs are the much-transcribed Vocalise by Sergei Rachmaninoff from his Melodies; and a relatively unknown gem by Dmitri Shostakovich, Farewell, Granada, from Six Traditional Spanish Folksongs. By way of a rambunctious encore, the recital closes with the duet, For�ts paisibles (Peaceful forests) by the eighteenth-century French master Jean Philippe Rameau from his opera-ballet Les Indes Galantes.

George Lloyd who died in 1998 is mostly remembered for his 12 Symphonies, but his compositions include Opera, Choral, Concerto, Piano and Chamber Music. LNA approached GLS earlier in 2023 with a proposal that will see all of the music scores digitized and the entire record archive represented in new compilations, in both Physical Only formats. Going beyond the act of preservation the Trustees of LNA believe that George Lloyd's music is ripe for rediscovery by concert management and music lovers. George Lloyd's music, particularly his operas, won him great praise and popularity before WW2. But as broadcasting and concert life changed direction in the 1960s, his style, which is dramatic, large-scale, richly orchestrated unafraid of a big tune, fell out of favour. We believe that George Lloyd's time has come again and will use the combined resources of the Lyrita Nimbus Arts charity, and Lyrita label, together with the manufacturing, printing publishing and distribution arm of Nimbus Records to support this venture.

Karel Ancerl was one of the most tragic Conductors of the Twentieth century: he survived the Extermination Camps, in which he lost his wife and children. After the war, with Vaclav Talich, he was certainly the greatest Bohemian Conductor. Known above all for his recordings of Smetana and Dvorak, he stood out for his interpretations (early 1960s) of the great European repertoire of the 19th century. This double CD testifies to his approach to three very different, and significant, composers such as Mahler, Sibelius and Janacek. High quality Studio recordings.

Usually, the music world commemorates the important birthdays or anniversaries of the deaths of it's celebrities. It is extremely rare for a work itself to be honoured with an anniversary celebration and presented accordingly. The present recording is one of these exceptions, because the featured work was first heard exactly one hundred years ago. On 19 December 1924, Fritz Busch conducted the premiere of his Piano Concerto Op. 31 at the Semperoper in Dresden, which had just been completed by his brother Adolf, the celebrated violinist and devoted composer. The soloist at the premiere was Rudolf Serkin, for whom his future father-in-law had written the work. At the time, critics praised the 'serious, well-constructed, melodious and at the same time rewarding composition', that now - garnished by a series of solo piano pieces - invites you to celebrate it's anniversary.

Inscribed to the memory of Grace Williams's friend Nancy Elizabeth Jenkins, who died of cancer shortly before the work was completed, Grace Williams's Missa Cambrensis is a full-scale setting of the Mass in Latin and Welsh, scored for soprano, alto, tenor and bass soloists, mixed chorus, boys' choir, orchestra and speaker. The orchestral forces required consist of two flutes (second doubling piccolo), two oboes, (second doubling cor anglais), two clarinets, bass clarinet, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, two trumpets, two tenor trombones, bass trombone, tuba, timpani, percussion (two players: cymbals, glockenspiel, tubular bells, tamtam), piano and strings.

It is remarkable not only that the London-based Noah Max (b. 1998) should have composed four string quartets by his mid-twenties; their stylistic range is also surprisingly wide. No. 1, which sets Jean Giono's story 'The Man who Planted Trees', narrated here by Sir Michael Morpurgo, has distant roots in English pastoralism, but the refracted lines, furtive colours and ecstatic textures of Nos. 2 and 3 are much closer to European modernism, with echoes of Kurtag and Ligeti. No. 4 is a wild ride, it's manic, swirling rhythms interrupted by passages of whispered intimacy that eventually draw it into silence.

On the English musical landscape of the second half of the 18th century, the name Elizabeth Turner stands out as a rare example of a female musician flourishing on British soil. She was successful singer on London's stages between about 1740 and 1756, as well as a composer and harpsichordist. Few of her biographical details have come down to us: her date of birth is unknown, and her year of death (1756) is inferred from reports in English newspapers of the time. The number and dates of printed references to her singing (the earliest is from March 1744) suggests a premature passing that interrupted an acclaimed vocal career. Rivalled only by her fellow singer-composer and contemporary Elisabetta de Gambarini (1731-1765, a Londoner of Italian descent), Elizabeth Turner alternated her activity on the stage with composition, publishing two volumes. The first, Twelve Songs, With Symphonies and a Thorough Bass for the Harpsichord (London, 1750), is a collection of English folk songs; the second, A Collection of Songs With Symphonies and a Thorough Bass. With Six Lessons for the Harpsichord (London, 1756), places 19 songs on texts by British poets alongside 6 lessons for harpsichord. The 'Lessons' genre was one very much in vogue in mid-18th-century England, as evidenced by Purcell's A Choice Collection of Lessons for the Harpsichord or Spinnet (1696), the aforementioned Gambarini's Six Sets of Lessons for the Harpsichord (1748), and Thomas Arne's VIII Sonatas or Lessons for the Harpsichord (1756). Turner's Six Harpsichord Lessons here receive their first complete recording. Each is divided into several movements, in the manner of a sonata. The style is often similar to that of the companion songs in her volume, whose melodies refer distinctly to the models of the tradition (from Purcell down to Boyce, via Thomas Arne and Maurice Greene). This is music intended for refined and cultured amateur performers, whose performances were moments of social conviviality where playing constituted pure pleasure. Yet in a society, such as England's, that relegated the role of women in music to the horizon of amusement, entertainment and domestic pastime, the figure of Elizabeth Turner emerges with disruptive and revolutionary force. Her sort of revolution is not one that demands a paradigm shift, it does not aspire to break the mould, it does not have a vocation for destruction: it is a gentle revolution, made up of elegance and grace, and precisely in it's gentleness it calls out to be heard, an invitation we cannot decline. The Six Lessons are structured as suites, each consisting of multiple short movements, such as minuets, and gigues, which were popular dance forms in Baroque music. - Turner's compositions exhibit a blend of French and Italian influences, which were prevalent in English harpsichord music of the period. The pieces are characterized by their elegant melodic lines and ornamentation, typical of the French style, alongside rhythmic vitality that hints at Italian practices. The works are accessible for amateur performers, suggesting they were intended for domestic music-making rather than professional concert settings. - The Six Lessons offer insight into the musical tastes and domestic entertainment practices of 18th-century England, particularly for women, who were often encouraged to learn keyboard instruments. Turner's work is a rare example of a published female composer in a male-dominated field. - Costanza Leuzzi, a pupil of Roberto Loreggian, wrote a dissertation on the life and work of Elizabeth Turner. With the purpose of giving new life to Turner's music, Costanza also founded an ensemble of young musicians and gives concerts where she combines the musical performance and the storytelling of the English composer's life. - The interest in unknown authors and forgotten musical literature is the main focus of Costanza's musical career, which aims to share lost masterpieces that deserve to be rediscovered in our time.

Reviewing previous issues of Schumann's piano music played by Constantino Catena, critics in Fanfare have noted the Italian pianist's affinity for the composer's unique sound world, it's peculiar subtleties and idiosyncrasies. 'Catena's playing is a precise balance of fluidity and markedness' (Davidsbundlertanze); 'he plays with wonderful tone and fine sensibility' (Fantaisie). For this new recording, made on a Yamaha CFX instrument in May 2024, he turns to a pair of cycles comparatively neglected within Schumann's pianistic output. While his fellow Italian Dino Ciani made a famous recording of the Novelettes Op.21 back in the 60s, the sequence of eight works has never attracted the attention of works like the Fantaisie or Kreisleriana, yet they embody the composer's inspiration in full spate. Schumann wrote to Clara early in 1838: 'In the last three weeks I have composed an extraordinary amount of music: hilarious things, Egmont stories, family scenes with fathers, a wedding.' True to their title, each Novellette tells a story in miniature, abundant in the poetic division between the heroic Florestan and dreamy Eusebius by which Schumann crystallised his own creative temperament. They also make a satisfyingly progressive sequence which culminates in the longest and most complex work in the cycle, alternately dancing and surging towards a grand apotheosis. By complement, the quartet of Nachtstucke Op.23 is a more introspective cycle, marked by a spirit of obsession which finds expression in piano writing of greater severity, less floridity and exuberance. The cycle was probably conceived in the wake of his brother Eduard's death; No.1 describes a cortege passing and receding from view. On Brilliant Classics, Catena has made premiere recordings of the piano music by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, rediscovered at the Staatsbibliothek in Munich and edited by him, for Edizioni Curci, as well as all the chamber music with piano by the same composer. Schumann (1810-1856) told his friend and teacher Heinrich Dorn that this music could only be understood with reference to the figure of Clara Wieck, and to the battles he fought on behalf of their love for each other. These works reflect Schumann's literary and imaginative tendencies, as the title suggests "little novellas" or short stories, aligning music with the narrative qualities of literature. Written during a highly creative period in his life, these pieces are imbued with contrasting moods and themes, often shifting between passionate, lyrical, and whimsical styles. - Each piece in the set has it's own distinct character while sharing thematic connections. The Novelletten showcase Schumann's mastery of piano writing, featuring intricate textures, rhythmic vitality, and expressive melodies. There is an interplay of contrasting sections within each piece, often marked by sudden changes in tempo and dynamics, which mirrors Schumann's fascination with duality and juxtaposition, possibly inspired by his alter egos Florestan and Eusebius - representing his fiery and introspective sides. - Also included in the recording are the Nachtstucke Op.23, which Schumann composed in March 1839. Alongside the renowned female composers of the 17th century, such as Francesca Caccini and Barbara Strozzi, and the leading singers (the prime donne) that dominated the stages of opera houses, such as Anna Renzi and Giulia Masotti, we should also appreciate the considerable number of excellent - yet largely unknown - "virtuose". Though customarily concealed amidst the ranks of a court, serving as maids of honour to a queen, princess or noblewoman, these were extremely accomplished musicians who often provided vital inspiration for the celebrated composers of the day. This recording, which stemmed from a research project dedicated to the virtuose working in 17th-century Rome, presents a selection of compositions that may well have formed part of their repertoire. The famous Lamento d'Arianna stands out among these pieces, in a version that was preserved in a contemporary Roman manuscript that Monteverdi very likely brought with him during his visit to the papal city in the autumn of 1610. In this album, which marks her solo debut, Carlotta Colombo, one of the most highly esteemed singers in today's Italian Baroque scene, pays tribute to the creativity of these extraordinary women, thereby reinstating them to the centre of their artistic environment and restoring to them the recognition that was often denied to them during their lifetime.

On 16 December 1932, Triton, a Parisian society devoted to the performance of new chamber music, was officially launched. Triton's members included Honegger, Milhaud, Poulenc and Prokofiev, whose Sonata for Two Violins, Op. 56 was given it's Western premiere at the society's inaugural concert.

Albert Harris (1916-2005) was an English musician who worked in Hollywood for most of his life as an orchestrator, arranger and composer for several of the big film Studios and for such pop icons as Barbra Streisand, Roberta Flack and Cher. He was born in London and studied piano from age 6, becoming also a self-taught guitarist. His knowledge of the guitar enabled him in later years to compose pieces specifically for it (his Variations & Fugue on a Theme by Handel was recorded by Andres Segovia). In the mid-1930s he began to make a name for himself as a session musician in London where he featured on many recordings, most notably as session guitarist with the Lew Stone band, his delicate but swinging improvisations enhancing many of Stone's records during 1934/35. Harris came to New York in 1938 and started playing piano in big bands across the US then began studying at the NYU College of Music, where he earned a doctorate in 1944. He finished the PhD remotely, having moved to Los Angeles in 1942, where he studied composition with Mary Carr Moore and Eugen Zador and conducting with Richard Lert. He served as professor of orchestration at UCLA and was Assistant Musical Director for broadcaster NBC from 1946 to 1949. Written in three movements, the Sonatina is one of the most emblematic pieces in Harris's catalogue. Popular elements from his adopted land, linked to graceful writing attentive to melodic construction, make this guitar composition one of his best. The Suite was composed in 1972 and features seven dance movements with modern and elaborate harmonies similar to those of jazz, especially in the Waltz. Homage to Unamuno was written in 1972 in tribute to it's dedicatee, a symbol of Spanish liberal thought and a high representative of Spanish literature. The short Intermezzo was included in a collection of compositions that appeared in the Classic Guitar Society's periodical magazine, Guitar News, in 1952, and despite it's brevity the elegance of Harris's language remains. Perhaps the composer's best-known guitar composition, together with the Sonatina, the Variations & Fugue on a Theme of Handel are dedicated to the great guitarist Andres Segovia, who was the first to record it. The work is highly influenced by the Spanish guitarist's style. In it Handel's theme is treated with highly original variations that rapidly transform the material and it's meaning. The three short Fantastic Dances, commissioned by the Guitar Foundation of America, were written in 1988, and although written in the same tuning they each present clearly different material and characters. The element that binds them is their brilliance and dynamism. They were composed as a compulsory piece for an international competition held that year. Metier celebrates the music of Justin Connolly (1933-2020) with a landmark double album. Featuring world premiere recordings of his intricately crafted works, this release shines a long-overdue spotlight on a composer once named by Pierre Boulez among the most compelling British voices of his era. Connolly's music, characterized by conceptual rigor, lyrical intensity, and flashes of playful invention, has remained largely absent from the public stage in recent decades. A long compositional hiatus in the late 20th century may have contributed to this neglect, but his unique voice is now rediscovered through this comprehensive recording.
