On April 24, 2025, Storyville Records release Peter Vuust Quartet's brand new album Homage, their seventh album, recorded in January 2024 at the legendary Nilento Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden. This marks the quartet's first instrumental album in over two decades. The quartet features award-winning bassist, composer, and neuroscientist Peter Vuust, known for his unique ability to blend the complexity of jazz with a scientific understanding of music. In addition to his success as a musician, Vuust is widely recognized as a neuroscientist specializing in the impact of music on the brain. His creative vision and musical insight drive the quartet's sound and this new album. Joining Vuust are Swedish piano icon Lars Jansson, Danish top-streaming saxophonist Claus Waidtlow, and prolific drummer Morten Lund. The album is a heartfelt tribute to the power of music and the legendary figures who have shaped it's history. With a collection of new compositions by Vuust, Homage captures a dynamic interplay of rhythm, melody, and emotion. Wallen, a groundbreaking figure in contemporary classical music, showcases her distinctive voice across a wide range of orchestral moods. From the celebratory ebb and flow of The World's Weather to the evocative imagery in Mighty River, the album explores themes of human resilience and natural forces. Works like Fondant and This Frame is Part of the Painting reflect Wallen's playful and deeply personal inspirations, whether from cake or art. Other highlights include By Gis and by Saint Charity, with it's intense emotional depth, and the virtuosic Dances for Orchestra, which blends styles from jazz to classical. This album is a powerful testament to Wallen's mastery and inventive spirit.

GRAMMY� Award-winning American soprano Susan Narucki is one of today's most committed advocates of the music of our time. Her deep and lasting working relationship with Gyo�rgy Kurta�g dates to 1986, the year the Hungarian composer penned his iconoclastic chamber work Kafka Fragments. Susan instinctively imbues the work with the widely varied moods of anguish, longing and rage alongside humour, absurdity and ecstasy that the texts convey. Arranged over four sections, Kurta�g sets 40 extracts from the diaries and letters of the mercurial novelist Franz Kafka. Despite being his largest song-cycle, Kurta�g deploys his signature miniature style: many of the movements last less than a minute long. Joining Susan is one of today's foremost interpreters of contemporary classical music, violinist Curtis Macomber. Together they prove to be the perfect proponents of Kurta�g's idiosyncratic fusion of poetry and music.

Thomas Pitfield (1903-99) was a polymath: artist, bookbinder, cabinet-maker, calligrapher, cartoonist, composer, designer, poet, printmaker and more. He brought to his compositions the same skill and craftsmanship as to his other activities, but during his long lifetime his personal modesty impeded public recognition of his achievements. Pitfield's fondness for folk-music sites his music within the broad tradition of English pastoralism established by Vaughan Williams, Finzi, Howells and others - though a touch of steel can occasionally be heard behind the lyricism.

Adolf von Henselt belongs firmly in the realm of 19th-century composer-pianists such as Chopin, Schumann and Liszt. He was influential in establishing a true Russian school of pianism and held in high esteem by Rachmaninov. Henselt's virtuoso technique was admired for it's cantabile qualities but his performing career was cut short by extreme stage fright. Dating from early in his career, the etudes blend technical demands with clarity of vision and a lyrical poetic expressiveness often reflected in colourful descriptive titles.

Madeline Dring was born into a musical and theatrical family, and gained an exhibition scholarship to the junior department of the Royal College of Music aged nine. Her focus changed from violin to piano and composition, which she studied with Herbert Howells, Gordon Jacob, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Her dedication to the theatre opened up a career writing music and songs for Revues & sketch-shows for theatre, radio and television: she had a facility and wit that some contemporaries compared to Gershwin. It is perhaps because of the nature of her work (commissions and performance-specific compositions) that a great deal of her output has been lost. Dring was married to Roger Lord, long-time principal oboe of the London Symphony Orchestra, for whom she wrote a number of works and arrangements that have been collected here. Nicholas Daniel OBE has long been acknowledged as one of the world's great oboists and is one of Britain's best-known musicians. He has significantly enlarged the repertoire for his instrument with the commissioning of hundreds of new works. He is joined here by Antonio Oyarzabal (piano), Adam Walker (flute) and Amy Harman (bassoon).

Rarely recorded on disc, Johann Sebastian Bach's concertos for three and four harpsichords illustrate the art of writing for keyboard and strings of which the composer was a pioneer. These emblematic works, characterised by a balance between strong themes and abundant internal energy, are performed by virtuoso harpsichordists from the new generation of Baroque musicians: Violaine Cochard, Olivier Fortin, Pierre Gallon, Jean-Luc Ho and, for the first time, the young Croatian harpsichordist Davor Krkljus, accompanied by the strings of Le Caravanserail under the direction of Bertrand Cuiller on harpsichord. The album also includes a previously unreleased transcription for four harpsichords of the famous Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, by Bertrand Cuiller.

Danmarks Radio (DR) played a decisive role when it comes to music by the romantic outsider Rued Langgaard (1893-1952). DR was the driving force in the relaunch of Langgaard from 1966 and many years ahead. This double CD contains the earliest recordings of symphonic works from 1957 to 1981. Main works such as the symphonies 4, 6 and 16 as well as The Music of the Spheres are among the nine unique recordings, of which only two previously have been released. The works show the full breadth of expression in Langgaard's oeuvre from 1907 to 1951.

They were created in the youthful period of the composer's oeuvre, but they are still characterized by a mature compositional technique, rich melodies and bold instrumentation. Both the Fantasy and the Concerto ooze the spirit of Polish music, which can be seen in the structure of motifs, harmony and vital rhythms of mazur and krakowiak. The pompous orchestral fragments intertwine with the lyrical ones. Particularly noteworthy are the beautiful piano solos accompanied by the solo violin and cello in the second movement of the concerto. Both compositions are distinguished by a clear virtuoso feature; however, it is subordinated to the musical contents. The young performers perfectly feel the character of Paderewski's music; in their interpretation, it is full of passion, pride, nostalgia, but also wit, expressing the unchanging qualities of the Polish soul.

Markus Burger: It has been a joy to work with such an extraordinary ensemble-my long-time duo partner, Jan von Klewitz, and the legendary rhythm section of Peter Erskine and Bob Magnusson. Together, we've created music that reflects the landscapes, people, and moments that have shaped me. This album was recorded after a memorable tour through Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, and those breathtaking regions undoubtedly influenced the music.

Roland Wilson has a remarkable talent for handling the music of the 16th and 17th centuries. His impressive reconstruction of Heinrich Schutz's Dafne, the first German opera, remains well remembered. His current work will undoubtedly find it's place alongside it: This is how the grand Festive Mass may have sounded, with which all of Venice in 1631 celebrated the end of a plague epidemic that had claimed a third of the population. The Doge fulfilled his vow and commissioned the construction of the Santa Maria della Salute church. The Serenissima Repubblica rejoiced, and Claudio Monteverdi provided music whose splendor was hardly to be surpassed. Among other things, he used "slide trumpets", which allowed for extraordinary tones: they can be seen in old paintings and are heard - reconstructed - in this recording. This is how a republic once expressed it's gratitude.
