This latest issue in APR's ongoing French Piano School series is perhaps the most important yet. The set brings together some of the earliest and rarest piano recordings ever made, not just in France, but worldwide, and includes the complete solo recordings of all the pianists featured except Wurmser. Many are reissued for the first time. The French office of the Gramophone Company was a pioneer in bringing serious artists into the studio and the results are a legacy of the utmost historical importance. So too are the early Fonotipia recordings of the only Herz pupil to record, Roger-Miclos, and the later Columbia electric recordings of Plante, made in his 90th year. With Saint-Saens, Diemer and Plante we can hear pianists who were born in the first half of the 19th century - a unique window into the past. The latest digital technology has been applied throughout and, amongst other improvements, we are now able to hear Pugno's wonderful recordings, hitherto flawed by a notorious vibrato caused by the unstable recording turntable used in 1903, with their pitch stabilized.

When Francesco Bartolomeo Conti came to Vienna in 1701, aged just twenty, he quickly found employment as a theorbo player in the imperial court chapel. His virtuoso skills with the plucked instruments of the time must have been considerable and would have been enough to secure him a good living. But Conti was also a remarkably creative spirit who, on his death in 1732, left behind an impressive quantity of stage works, some of which were widely performed - not least thanks to their original, imaginative instrumentation and their immense variety of expression, ranging from the drastically comic to filigree, vocal-instrumental dialogues and thus encompassing the whole world of "affects". Led by the soprano and harpist Hana Blazikova and the countertenor Valer Sabadus, flanked by the ensemble nuovo aspetto under the direction of theorbist Michael Ducker, this production presents a small musical anthology whose fascinating content is just 300 years old.

Barthold Heinrich Brockes was an influential German poet who added reflective and descriptive poetry into the texture of his Passion. Among several musical settings, the most famous is the one by Handel. This acclaimed staged version transports Handel's Brockes Passion into the opera house, widening the work's historical narrative to embrace the creation of the world, bringing a message of human greed and destruction into direct contact with the present day. Following on from his JS Bach Complete Organ Works collection performed on the organ at Trinity College Cambridge, David Goode returns with an album of organ works by WA Mozart. It is well known that Mozart highly esteemed the organ as an instrument (for example, his famous 'King of Instruments' remark) and enjoyed improvising at length. However, this sadly did not translate into writing for the instrument. Organist David Goode explores these works, and those which even may not have been intended for organ, and discusses in his programme notes how best to render them for two hands and feet, and how to register them suitably. Written for the wedding celebrations in Venice of Louis XV and Marie Leszczynska, Vivaldi's serenade La Gloria e Imeneo offers a wonderful synthesis of his mid-1720 style and shines a light on two captivating voices, those of Teresa Iervolino and Carlo Vistoli. Truly enchanting! The album will be released exactly 300 years after the work was first released. // Resuming it's exploration of a less well-known side of the Red Priest's music, the Vivaldi Edition again explores the territory of the serenades by entrusting the neglected La Gloria e Imeneo to Andrea Buccarella and his Abchordis Ensemble, already champions of the Serenata a tre, issued two years ago (OP7901). And what a revelation it is! Andrea Buccarella nails the work with his thoughtful phrasing, always full of life, fleet of foot, and expressive (for instance in Ognor colmi d'estrema dolcezza), inspiring the two singers to a level of intensity which stays with one. From the start his quicksilver direction of the Concerto for strings in F major (Allegro) is gripping, reaching unique heights in the two protagonist-heroes' short and ebullient duetto Vedro sempre la pace. And impossible to forget Gloria's aria Alle amene, franche arene, transfigured by the amber-shaded mezzo of the charismatic Teresa Iervolino, or again Carlo Vistoli's utterly sensual decorations in Imeneo's aria Care pupille! Like Vivaldi's other Serenades preserved in the body of volume 27 of the Fonds Fo� collection in Turin - the Serenata a 3 (1718) and La Sena festeggiante (1726) - La Gloria e Imeneo (1725) was written for a French patron, specifically Jacques-Vincent Languet, Count of Gergy (1667-1734) and France's ambassador to Venice between 1723 and 1731. With La Gloria e Imeneo, performed during the course of a splendid feast on 12 September 1725 at the French Embassy in Venice, Languet celebrated the wedding of Louis XV and the Polish Princess Marie Leszczynska, which had taken place at Fontainebleau some days earlier. The two allegorical characters, Gloria and Imeneo compete with each other in praising the royal couple. Written by an unknown author, the tightly knit libretto celebrates the political significance of the wedding and it's impact upon the royal dynasty and the descendants to be spawned by the union, as well as the peace and prosperity it will bring to the kingdom. Far from aping the French style, typified by the dotted rhythms of the Lully overture, with La Gloria e Imeneo Vivaldi rather presents a wonderful synthesis of his mid-1720s approach, and his painting of human emotions remains irresistibly charming.

Acclaimed concert violinist Rachel Barton Pine, sought-after pianist Orion Weiss, and the multiple Grammy Award-winning Pacifica Quartet join forces for their new album French Impressions: Chamber Music by Chausson & Tailleferre, celebrating transformational works by French composers Ernest Chausson and Germaine Tailleferre, whose chamber music deserves greater attention on recordings. Chausson's Op. 21 sextet, titled Concert, known for it's unusual orchestration of solo violin, string quartet, and piano, takes advantage of the quasi-orchestral capabilities of a chamber ensemble. The only work on the album featuring Rachel Barton Pine, Pacifica Quartet, and Orion Weiss as a collective, Concert is regarded as one of the most important French chamber music works of the late-19th-century fin-de-siecle era. Germaine Tailleferre was a prolific composer and the only female member of the group of celebrated 20th-century French composers known as Les Six. Tailleferre was a piano prodigy who enrolled at the Paris Conservatoire at age 12, defying her father's objections. Her compositions span symphonic, chamber, and film music. A winner of numerous premiere prix, she studied with revered composers including Maurice Ravel, whose work significantly influenced her versatile style. Violinist Rachel Barton Pine showcases her "astonishing and joyful" (Washington Post) artistry, alongside the "powerful technique and exceptional insight" (Washington Post) of pianist Orion Weiss for Tailleferre's Violin Sonata No. 2, Pastorale, and Berceuse for Violin and Piano - works that often express a nostalgic longing for home and display dynamic and adventurous interplay between the violin and piano. The Pacifica Quartet, known for it's "remarkable expressive range and tonal beauty" (New York Times), is featured on Tailleferre's String Quartet, a piece acclaimed for it's playful themes, fluid accompanimental figuration, and bold harmonies.

With their dramatic history, the Peterhouse Partbooks are among the most significant collections of English sacred music manuscripts from the 16th and early 17th centuries. Including several world premiere recordings, this programme presents a survey of the rich variety in the Peterhouse manuscripts, from the Venetian splendour of Croce's eight-part anthem Omnes gentes plaudite, to the penitential intimacy of Tallis's O God be merciful unto us.

The Piatti Quartet and Emmanuel Despax join forces to present an album of works by Farrenc, Schumann and Durosoir. Louise Farrenc arranged her own brilliantly dramatic Wind Sextet and Piano, for Piano Quintet and this arrangement is a World Premiere Recording on this release. They've chosen to include three of Lucien Durosoir's most touching and beautiful pieces, one for violin and piano, and two for cello and piano. The Vienna live recording from 1948 not only captures a performance of superlatives, but also a moment of historical and emotional significance.
